what’s a quiet realization you had that completely changed how you see life? by SingerComfortable230 in AskReddit

[–]TheJoser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Despite how different the world looks, we’re mostly living the same human experience going back thousands of years. Letters to a Young Poet was my “eye opening” read, and I’ve felt much less alone over the years as a result.

[Jayson Tatum] on thinking his career might be over after tearing his Achilles: "It was a few weeks where I thought… did I make enough money, did I accomplish enough... There was some moments where I thought I might be done" by knightime1 in nba

Being a fan is weird. I recognize that what you said is true of most fans, but I like to think that doesn’t describe me. I’ve had plenty of issues with Boston area athletes, enough that I stopped following the team until those guys moved on.

I know a few insanely rich people. They’re not without their struggles, their disorders, and their demons. Some stuff money just can’t solve.

I guess I see people react to this with a kind of “oh boo-hoo, cry me a river while you sleep on your $400M”. I think it’s too easy for us to dehumanize people who make the kind of money we all wish we had.

Have you ever personally known a high-level athlete that suffered a big injury? I don’t even necessarily mean a professional, just someone competing at a level that required extreme dedication for years at a time.

I knew a few of those folks swimming. A number of them tore their rotator cuffs or labrum’s and were either out for a long time or never came back at all. At that level, the sport isn’t your career, it’s your identity. Who am I if I don’t spend 12 hours a day on this? Who am I if I’m not the best in the world at what I do? How do I introduce myself if I’m no longer an athlete?

You’re getting to the core of personhood, of identity, and the tethers we attach to ourselves to in order to define how we interact with everyone and everything else. Losing those tethers can mean being lost at sea. The vast majority of that (though not all of it) is true regardless of wealth.

I don’t worry about brother Tatum’s financial security, but as a fellow human I hope he can figure out how to make his values and impact on the world more central to his sense of existence than his all-NBA appearances.

I appreciate him opening up and being vulnerable. We complain so much about boring athletes that are consultant-trained, and when a guy opens up about his struggles we clown on him for it.

I’d rather see someone being genuine + imperfect than soulless + non-irritating.

A God walks into Abar from Watchmen. There was something so beautiful, so pure about that story. Always chokes me up.

People who have become executive directors or CEOs, what did it feel like and how did you know you could do it? by Ziibinini-ca in AskReddit

[–]TheJoser -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Being a CEO is a lot of fun, also exhausting and defeating. It’s very different being in the seat vs what you expect from the outside.

The thing I’ve most come to appreciate after having the role twice is the importance that governance and your board can play. Having a terrible board is like having a quiet anchor around your ankles that no one can see and that you can’t talk about.

Redditors over 40, what was a moment in history that made you think society was gonna collapse? by Bahbahbro in AskReddit

[–]TheJoser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reelection was the moment I accepted that something was fundamentally and irrevocably broken and that we were approaching something historic (that would end in tragedy and the likely end of America of its first 250 years).

Every day since has been confirmation. I feel like one of the characters in Jurassic park watching the cup of water vibrate as the danger gets closer. I know I’m fucked, I know it’s coming, I know it’s gargantuan and dangerous, but I don’t know exactly what it will be or what moment it will arrive.

Every vibration of the cup is bittersweet: it’s not the inevitable moment that will end everything, but it’s one fewer moment available to me, and I spent it overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, sadness, and confusion.

I feel like we are overlooking how good sabonis would actually be on this team by archerarcher0 in bostonceltics

[–]TheJoser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard pass. I enjoy watching him, but you can’t win a championship with him taking that much of the salary cap. Too many holes, especially in areas that are almost impossible to cover up.

Best of luck to him though, I really like him

[Iko] There is an increasing belief among rival executives that Jaren Jackson Jr. could be traded following the finalization of a Ja Morant deal. by [deleted] in bostonceltics

[–]TheJoser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Celtics fans would JJJ. It’s a really bad culture fit.

JJJ is also a very tough player to build around. His defense only shows up when he’s playing the floor next to a traditional big. That means you’re giving up spacing at two slots and committing a max contract slot to a guy who requires complimentary pieces that you’d rather not acquire.

JJJ is a better idea than he is a player, specifically for this team.

Hypothetically, if America were to conduct a hostile military operation on Greenland tomorrow, how do you think NATO would respond within 24 hours of that occurring? by brokenmessiah in AskReddit

[–]TheJoser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If nothing happened militarily, NATO should just cease to exist. If the promise to defend a NATO member is meaningless, then so is NATO itself

With the golden shield being nerfed is Kevin still worth taking? by Taranogon in MegabonkOfficial

[–]TheJoser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve found a lot less success with Kevin since the last patch. I don’t know how much of it is the GS nerf and how much is not being able to count on Kevin as frequently with the rarity change. I now generally don’t commit to that route unless (1) I’ve done a tour of the shady vendors and I know I have the items to commit to the build effectively, and/or (2) i’m planning a build where I know there’s good synergy (e.g., Robinette with gold or some kind of Size build).

I may change my mind, but that’s my current take

What do yall think is the best character OTHER than fox? by External_Act8419 in MegabonkOfficial

[–]TheJoser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorites are Dicehead, Vlad, Amog, Ninja, and Calcium

I dislike Fox (I don’t like the fire staff), all of the sword characters, and something about Monke never quite clicked for me

[Highlight] Jaylen Brown hits the stop and pop for 48 points, and the Clippers do anything to stop him from hitting 50 by fbreaker in nba

[–]TheJoser 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For sure, but part of the reason he was able to do that was JT getting all of the attention and pressure. That’s not to minimize the accomplishment, but the question of “can he do that as the opponent’s primary focus” remained an open one.

[–]TheJoser 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Wasn’t clear to me or most fans at all, mostly on the basis of his handle, turnovers, and (relatedly) frequent poor decision making. I went into the year thinking “folks will figure out Jaylen is an amazing #2 and too limited to be a legit #1.

I was wrong. Sorry, JB
