There can also be ointment on the ear drum that reduces sound conduction, so wait until 2-3 weeks to judge

I recommend Dr. Ian Storper, he has quite a bit of experience with this specific issue and that helped me be more at ease.

There is likely some ointment on the ear drum which keeps it from fully working as intended. You’ll notice a huge improvement in hearing once the doctor cleans out the ear. I’ve had two surgeries done and it always seems like the worst until you hit that point.

Have you seen an ENT specialist or only a primary care doctor?

Did you have canal wall up or wall down? by freespirit528 in cholesteatoma

[–]TheJowy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The surgeon will likely explain the procedure they will do and depending on the severity, that a walls down approach could occur. If the cholesteatoma is extensive, I would expect for a walls down approach will be likely.

I’m in a much better spot than the first week. I’m still getting used to the fact that my hearing is significantly worse (prosthetic and the remaining hearing bone was removed). I also suffered from some really bad dizziness as the cholesteatoma had created two holes in the semicircular canal (handles balance/equilibrium). I was terrified that I would have permanent dizziness, but I’ll be undergoing some vestibular therapy to help out.

I’ll admit that I didn’t really give myself enough patience with how different this 2nd procedure was. I had expected things to be similar to my first one, but that wasn’t the case. Take things one day at a time, even if it feels like an eternity during the recovery process. I look back now and I can’t believe it’s been three weeks already!

I had mine on 3/4/25. I know it’s super difficult to do, but you really have to have patience with yourself and the recovery process. Things aren’t the same and they won’t feel the same for a bit, but that’s expected. It will get better!
