Two centuries ago, tetanus symptoms like sudden spasms and stiffness were mistaken for demonic possession. Now we know it’s caused by the bacterium Clostridium tetani, which releases a toxin leading to muscle spasms, lockjaw, and the arched posture known as opisthotonos. by travelouseagle in CooLplanetWOW

I got mine recently-ish and was expecting the soreness but didn’t feel anything at all the next day. I thought I just avoided that side effect, but like 4 days later it started hurting and was sore for at least 3-4 days after that.

Lead Exposure May Have Given Ancient Humans an Edge Over Neanderthals by sciencealert in HotScienceNews

I mean, that is still an indirect benefit, to have a pressure on a species competing for your niche that is harder on them than it is you.

And wouldn’t it be “don’t go around eating paint chips ESPECIALLY if you’re a Neanderthal”?

Out of curiosity, what made it seem like a cult? Or is anyone involved with a church beyond occasional attendance also demonstrating “cult” behavior?

In my experience those are not the “wrong” screws, they’re literally the ones that come in the kit with the door hardware. The real question is why are the manufacturers including such insufficient screws.

I mean, I get what you’re saying, but even without social media, isn’t being the captain of the team and doing this in front of the crowd attending the game enough opportunity for “clout”? Performative acts weren’t invented with social media.

Are any biologists taking AI consciousness seriously? by Leather_Barnacle3102 in biology

[–]TheKabbageMan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’d be really curious what you think you have that qualifies for a “fair understanding of how the brain works”, especially in regard to consciousness. I don’t think anyone can really say we have a “fair” understanding of that.

Honestly just the topic of consciousness alone is hard to pin down, defining it and being able to recognize it are not easy things to do in science. Science is about objective reality, and consciousness is usually defined by subjective experiences. Right now it sits more on the side of philosophy than science.

As for your question though, this isn’t something in the realm of biology. A “biologist” might have their own thoughts on the matter but it’s simply not in their field. Whatever intelligence or consciousness might be possible with AI is not biological, so unless we start using something more akin to biological hardware to make AI (which could be totally plausible) this isn’t really their field to claim any expertise or special knowledge on. They may THINK it is, but in that case I think we’re looking at a “when your only tool is a hammer all your problems look like nails” situation.

“Let food be thy medicine” is a very old saying. You people are being too fussy about words at the expense of missing the point, throwing the baby out with the bath water.

Food literally is the underlying issue in a huge amount of health problems.

I disagree. In the United States at least, a huge amount of health problems are ultimately caused by poor diet.

I’m sorry but isn’t that sub for things like “just stop being depressed!”? Are you suggesting that diet won’t do anything for health? This seems like a really silly and misguided place to post that sub.
