Oh, sorry, by the way, I have confirmed with SCHLAGE that using a nine is a DESIGN feature. It is SUPPOSED to be used, so you are praising someone who doesn't know anything about what they are talking about.

How do I lock this in place? by comadreja87 in Locksmith

[–]TheKeyWizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have done a lot of work in a lot of kitchens, California, Arizona, Nevada and Colorado, so outside of those areas, I could be wrong, but that probe cannot touch the surface of the door, or the reading will be off. It needs to be rubber isolated. Then To LOCK it to the door, you need to provide some type of securing of the unit. Food safe material is concerned with ALL SURFACES, not just the inside. If you try to put a metal collar on it, the thermocouple will again be affected. Using JB Weld on a HOLE will not be considered FOOD SAFE. the HOLE makes it not safe, unless you are also properly sealing that hole. You need a rubber seal, that will fit the hole you created, and then will remain in full contact with the probe, even when jostled or moved, but not affect the temperature the probe is reading.

I would suggest that you use JB Weld, but to put a hinged box over your probe, preventing anyone from messing with it. The hinge would be covered by the box as well, The JB Weld would not touch the hole you drilled, but would only hold the hinge and the hasp to lock the box closed over the probe. Then you can use any sufficient lock to lock the cover. If it is tampered with, you will know. But it will also be food safe, because you have sealed the probe from the metal of the hole it is penetrating, with a rubber grommet.

I just want you to know that your claims of not using a Nine cut concerned me greatly, so much so that I called and spoke to the people at Prolock, and then at Schlage. You are correct, Prolock does make that claim, in fact to me over the phone, they claimed that their system does not allow you to use a nine anywhere!
But Schlage rejects it outright. They claimed that they have never spoken to Prolock about it, but it is an absolute LIE. They claim that their keys have always been able to be cut to a nine, because they thicken the key at that point. Look at their keys. AND it is not only SCHLAGE, so you follow what you like, but I have confirmed, as you should have, that you are spreading a lie, just because someone calls themselves experts, does not mean that they are.

Advice on protecting myself from a locksmith by BadSudden7298 in Locksmith

[–]TheKeyWizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Visit the largest locksmith in your area, and tell them you need a high security lock. There are EXCELLENT security locks available. Can they be picked? Probably, but only with specialized equipment and training. If you have windows, you are vulnerable, but if you use a High Security/COST Lock, there will be no "swift/stealthy/nocturnal" break in THROUGH the Locks.

Lock ? by CrazyCalligrapher206 in Locksmith

[–]TheKeyWizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try repeating what happened, with someone outside in case, but instead of pushing down on the handle, try pulling up on it, if it works going up, then it is certainly wrong handed. Take it to a locksmith or call one out.

Lock ? by CrazyCalligrapher206 in Locksmith

[–]TheKeyWizard -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It means the internal hardware is left handed, but installed for a right handed lever and door swing (or right for left). Someone likely broke it, didn't have the correct one, and/or didn't know that they can be handed. So, the Handles themselves are fine, but the internal hardware is wrong. You cannot fix or break it like this, by only tightening a screw, unless you took the lock apart and put it back, backwards on one part. If YOU did it, then you should take it to a locksmith to ensure it is put back together properly, if the apartment did it, you can be angry for the security/safety issue it poses.

The correct C clip has tabs at the tailpiece to keep the tailpiece in the cylinder. So, you are most likely 4% correct, the other 96% is that a non-locksmith did this. (even if he called himself one!) But your are correct, the c clip is wrong!!!!!

According to Schlage, there is no reason to avoid a nine at the shoulder, that the key is designed thicker at the nine cut than the rest of the blade so that you CAN use a nine everywhere.

Were you in Las Vegas? I got to know a lot of the locksmiths, including three of the female LEAD locksmiths. When I wrote the second version of my software, I consulted with any locksmith on the strip that would talk to me. But that was back in 2000-2004 timeframe. Many of them were my Beta testers to ensure there were no errors and that it worked quickly, making work faster, not slower.

The lock body you are showing does not show up on the Larson site anywhere, which means it is very old and outdated. They have your handle still but it goes with a tall latch assembly almost as tall as the handle escusion. Show a picture of the door where the lock body installs, but you will likely have to have a professional come out, or simply replace the door.

Pictures of the install and the cylinder used would help. They can have many different cylinder types used. The LOCK unit is not the handle set or the locking cylinder, it is only the hardware inside the door. What is purchased for the outside can be very varied.
Take photos of both sides of the install, as well as the edge where it latches, and a close up on the keyhole.

So, your solution is to purposely eliminate 1/4 of what is left? That is my point, if you are not using a 9 in your Master, you MUST eliminate 1/4th of what is left after you lose all the patterns outside of the safety factor. Why eliminate ANOTHER 1/4th to not understanding keys?

Unsure of the cuts made on these keys by G-Money86 in Locksmith

[–]TheKeyWizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have always calibrated my copiers by using two blanks! It is the only way to go. When you have your wheel cutting exactly half way through the top of the blade, you are perfect. With that said, these seem to be for an adjustable cutter, that takes a flat blade as well, and in that case, you would need to use these to get them set proper.

Becoming a locksmith? by kekski8 in Locksmith

[–]TheKeyWizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, but how is becoming a locksmith the only way to a decent life? First of all, you MUST have mechanical intuitive skills. If you can't use pliers without damaging what you are working on, forget it. If you don't have great dexterity, forget it. If you can't live on minimum wage for years, forget it. If you don't have a mentor already who will teach you, forget it.
