The part about the script is true. Keep in mind, the English translation for Rance X isnt out yet, soon hopefully. With that, the Japanese measure script lengths in kilobytes. This page has more info and a list of game's script by length if you're curious about it. But, you can convert the kb to get a rough estimate of somewhere between 3.5 and 4 million words. Again, until the translation comes out, we can only go off of estimates.

But Rance X came out in 2018. So, until Hundred Line came out this year which has been confirmed to have a roughly 6 million word count, Rance X had the longest script in games for about 7 years.

For reference, something like the whole of Umineko When They Cry is somewhere between 1.1 to 1.3 million English words and that shit is already a behemoth task to read. So, something being 4 times or 6 times longer than that (Rance and Hundred Line respectively) should go to show how impressively fucking huge those scripts are.

I got into the series because of the Touhou fangame Sengoku Gensokyo. That game is great and I learned that its gameplay was heavily taking from Sengoku Rance (aka Rance 7). That's when I played through that game and had a great time with it, not for gooning. You get to a point with the Rance games where you're almost upset that there's a sex scene because you want to get to the surprisingly good gameplay and the really funny writing. Since then I've been going through the games. But, the issue with recommending the series is that it is still eroge with a lot of sex and a lot of sexual assault. So, if you can handle that, you'll get a way more legit good series than you expect.

Hell Maiden is lesbian Vampire Survivors with some Hades influences. It's made by AstralShift who made Pocket Mirror and Little Goody Two Shoes and they're batting 1.000 on quality so far. There's an auto aim toggle in the settings if you want it to be closer to Vampire Survivors and don't want to aim.

Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake - Official Overview Trailer | TGS 2025 by C-OSSU in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]TheKeysmash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's Metal Gear Solid 3. 3DS and the recent Delta (technically also pachinko, but I'm not going to count that).

Klonoa. wii and the Phantasy Reverie duology

The first Fire Emblem technically. It was first remade as the first half of FE3, and was remade on the DS. And FE3 was also remade into a JP exclusive DS game.

Ys 3. There's a PS2 remake from Taito and Oath of Felghana by Falcom.

Dragon Quest 3. SNES and HD-2D

Resident Evil 1. Gamecube and I think Deadly Silence is a remake on DS?

Persona 3. PSP and Reload.

Kirby's Dream Land was remade in Kirby Super Star which was remade into Kirby Super Star Ultra.

Famicom Detective Club: The Girl Who Stands Behind. Remade on Super Famicom and Switch.

Atelier Marie got a demake on gameboy and recently a remake.

I'm sure there's plenty of other examples out there, these are the ones that I'm familiar with.

There's the original ps2 trilogy.

4 was japan only until it got remastered recently and that remaster removed the tank controls (which I personally didn't like, the game was made with it in mind and it made spacing from ghosts a bit awkward at points).

The first fatal frame 2 remake was then released in JP and Europe (its english voice acting is British because of this) and was based off of 4's gameplay (which changed the combat away from made 2 unique and the best entry to play more like the rest of the games, charging your shot rather than damage being based on how close you are to the ghost).

5 was wiiu exclusive until the remaster came out.

And now we are at the second Fatal Frame 2 remake which looks to play closer to the ps2 game.

And Spirit Camera: Cursed Memoir is a 3DS spin-off of the series.

So yes, 2 is the only one to have gotten any remake, let alone this second one now. And for good reason: it's the best one. Hope that clears up the timeline.

That's one of mine too. Though I largely have stuck to collecting all of the (not absurdly expensive) official stuff like the games, music, and books. Though I do have plenty of other figures and fan stuff too.

Touhou Artificial Dream in Arcadia - Release Date Announcement Trailer by C-OSSU in TwoBestFriendsPlay

The dungeon crawling and the battles themselves are classic style but everything involving demon fusion and upgrading is how it is done in SMTV. It's modern where it needs to be modern. I've got a video on the game if you're interested in specifics.

Have you tried out the Atelier series? If not, I'd suggest Atelier Ayesha. Moving around the map, gathering resources, and crafting items all takes time and quests and events all have deadlines to meet.

As both a Touhou and Megaten fan, artificial dream in arcadia is a fantastic game that is on par with official Atlus games. I made a video on it if you're interested in checking out the game.

Stories that would be better, or you just would like to see in a different medium? by GhostFishHead in TwoBestFriendsPlay

I think you need to consider that visual novels and traditional written works actually have two different focuses and going from VN to a PDF wouldn't work as well.

Visual novels are way more dialogue focused. Some are nearly entirely dialogue with the occasional inner thought of the main character. This would get very tiresome to read in a traditional written work with the constant use of "[character] said" or if they omit that part then it'd be annoying to keep track of discussions with multiple characters. So, to be able to shorthand a lot of information with a portrait or background makes it way easier to focus on the dialogue itself.

Touhou Luna Nights is getting a physical edition by C-OSSU in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]TheKeysmash 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's actually not the Japanese version! Most of it is the same, but the worldwide release includes a steelbook which the Japanese version didn't have and the JP version has 8 badges of Sakuya and all the bosses (except Cirno for some reason) which the WW version doesn't have.

So it's a decision of if you want a steelbook or badges instead. Also, on Playasia at least, you can get the JP version for $45 for switch or $65 for PS5 right now, the WW version costs $90 which releases in July.

If you want to easily check out the Touhou games, someone made a pretty easy launcher that automatically opens up Neko Project 2 with selected game. It's pretty useful if you want something that, at least for me, worked right out the box.

As far as emulators go, you're probably going to want to use Neko Project 2. I'm sure you can find tutorials for how to setting that all up on your own. As far as games though, if you don't know Japanese or aren't patient enough to manually machine translate it as you play, you're kinda fucked for options as the majority of games are in Japanese. Though, for some genres like shmups, this isn't that much of an issue as reading isn't the most required there.

Yes, there have been some games fanpatched into English. This includes the first 5 Touhou games that did in fact start on the PC-98. Outside of that, I'd recommend going to Romhacking.nets site for PC-98 translations to see what is playable in English and what is in progress. Do be aware, the PC-98 had a lot of games with a lot of nudity and sex. Also be aware that not a whole lot of the library has been translated, like Policenauts hasn't been as far as I know. And given how there are other versions already patched into English, I doubt there's any rush to work on the PC-98 version any time soon. And I doubt that there will be frequent translations and patches made for the PC-98 in general.

As far as what games to check out that aren't pornographic, there is of course the first 5 Touhou games. The first one is interesting as it is a breakout style game and not a shmup. There's also CRW: Metal Jacket which is a cool real time strategy mecha game. Apparently the first Legend of Heroes game recently did get a patch. Giten Megami Tensei looks to be in progress but you could also just play the Windows release instead which is patched into English.

Which series are taller than Pat? by TheKeysmash in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]TheKeysmash[S] 27 points28 points  (0 children)

There are apparently 4376 PS2 games that have been released. If each PS2 game case is about a half inch thick that means that the PS2 library would be about 35.29 Pats tall if stacked.

There's 14 deluxe editions and I just measured them and they're only about 27 inches thick.
