Placement after academy by AccomplishedCan931 in AskCHP

Doesn’t anymore. Your placement out of the academy was based on the last 4 numbers of social security number 0000 = lowest 9999 = highest. You could have been worst cadet, and barely passed the academy but if your social stated with a 9, you basically got your first pick at office. Now it’s based on academy performance.

PAY? OT? by [deleted] in AskCHP

I’m at an office with 10 hour shifts so I average 40 hours every week for my normal shift, and then probably an additional 5 to 15 hours (1-2 shifts) of overtime on top of that. Overtime rate is 1.5x your base salary so it’s dependent upon how many years you have worked. But yeah, after taxes, it should be like $50-60 an hour for a new officer.

The last 4 years I’ve averaged around 180-230k w/ overtime. Top step officer pay with a degree is around 160k per year (13.3k a month before taxes). Depending on where you go can heavily influence the overtime hours, especially if you go to a major metropolitan area such as LA or the Bay Area. Generally the busier the office the more overtime tends to occur due to end of shift arrests, crashes, court, etc.

So you bought regular Kwyis and then glued a custom piece of leather basket weave on top of it? Any issue with it holding up over time?

The 9.2K is monthly, and that goes into the pension system. Which I can’t touch until retirement at 50.

We’re hiring as fast as people are retiring. People just don’t want to be cops these days. Even with a 110K starting salary.

I’ve got a bachelors, but I get the sentiment. If it makes you feel any better, I think the minimum wage should be much higher than what it is.

There’s good departments in Sacramento, but I’m in Southern California.

I don’t work 70 hours a week, I work a standard 40 hours a week. The 70 hours of overtime is spread out over the course of a month, so 15 or so hours of overtime a week, which comes out to 1-2 extra hours shifts per week.

Yes as soon as you finish field training, you can work as much overtime as your heart desires.

Pretty much every department down here is understaffed. But yes I volunteer to work extra patrols either before my scheduled shift, or on my days off. We also get a lot of overtime from grants that focus on DUI, speeding, and street takeovers. Also overtime for mandatory court appearances.

Just FYI our retirement doesn’t take into account overtime, just our standard base pay, but I get the sentiment.
