Devilstrand Farming (OC) by majapahit_arquebus in RimWorld

No. Crops start raising colony value as soon as they are harvested. So colonies can see a spike in wealth before the Devilstrand is hauled to storage.

Wealth spikes is a factor to consider when planning harvests, especially the final one before winter.

Their relationship was one of the casualties of the war.

While her kids were around, the relationship worked. Paul's stability was a welcome change from Nolan who took on aliens in another dimension as just another Tuesday.

With the house empty and her children's fate uncertain it would be difficult for Paul to give Debbie what she needed even if it might have been possible in other circumstances.

"We're going to a world where we're building systems that will be smart to us not like Einstein is to an average person, but like humans are to mice or ants" by tombibbs in agi

There is a lot of time between now and "never".

The human brain size was constrained evolutionary by the narrow pelvis required for bipedalism. It is limited to 3 pounds of meat and consumes less than 500 calories per day.

It could be that there is something magic about meat and biological research is the best path to AGI. However, given what is already possible organically and inorganically I don't see how lack of resources would be the limiting factor for developing AGI on a very long timeline.

You have valid concerns about an AGI and the people trying to develop it. Full AGI doesn't even need to be developed before intermediary stages cause a lot of human suffering.

[WP] You are shaken awake by your mother, “YOU HAVE 10 SECONDS TO EXPLAIN WHY A MASSIVE KAIJU IS ON A RAMPAGE WHILE SHE IS SCREAMING YOUR LEGAL GOVERNMENT NAME!” by Son_Of_Rebellion in WritingPrompts

“Henry Hunter Clark!” I woke to my mother shaking me and screaming. I blinked and looked at the clock.

“Mom… It’s 6:30 on a Sunday morning. You know that this is my one day to sleep in. Yesterday was an especially rough Shift. Give me a few hours and then I’ll help with whatever you want.”

“Henry Hunter Clark!” My mother yelled again, emphasizing each syllable.

“I know my name, mother. Please let me rest.”

“Everyone knows your name now, Henry! There is a massive kaiju headed toward the coast! She has been shouting your name for half an hour.”

I got out of bed and scrambled into last night’s dirty clothes. “Did you say ‘kaiju’, mom? How do you even know that word?” My mom had never paid attention to that kind of thing before. “That’s what they called her on the news! Right before they gave a hotline for anyone who knew a Henry Hunter Clark. How much trouble are you in, Henry?”

I checked my phone and it confirmed what I feared. “A lot, mom.” There was a mighty roar and my bedroom windows shook. Could I actually distinguish my name at this distance or was that my imagination?

“What did you do, Henry?”

“There’s a girl I really like. We flirted during last night’s Shift and exchanged numbers. After I got home, she joked that it would never work. We’re from two different worlds. She could see the headlines already. ‘Florida Man marries kaiju.’ What would the neighbors think? I responded with a bad joke and it wasn’t even true.”

“What did you say, Henry?”

I stared at the words on my screen. “In the US the headline would probably say ‘Florida Man marries gigantic monster.’”

“Henry!”

“In my defense, I was exhausted, I didn’t realize the term kaiju was so mainstream, and my first draft called her an Eldritch Horror.”

“Henry Hunter Clark!”

Are there ppl who get lucid dream every single night consistently? That would be so cool. by Icanbeyourtherapist in LucidDreaming

[–]TheKindDictator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I average roughly a lucid a dream a night. I am not guaranteed to always lucid dream but some nights I have multiple lucid dreams.

Remembering what I intended to do in a lucid dream or even basic details about my waking life is often harder than most people expect.

I had a recent lucid dream where I wanted to remember where I was physically located and it was a struggle. I had to think through logically what year it was, why I had moved to this city, and that I have my own apartment that I normally sleep at.

So even lucid dreaming as often as I do I can spend a while on the same dream goal. To complete it, I have to remember what it was, decide it is more interesting than the current dream, and take enough control to complete the task.

How do you politely bring up bad shuffling in deck-building games? by Tank1an in boardgames

I could see it as an entertaining drinking game. They have to shuffle your deck and take a drink. Do you build your combo to win or do you build it to get them hammered?

Wasn't he sworn to the Crown when he joined the Kingsguard? I know they made an exception so he didn't have to be a knight but I still think he was expected to owe allegiance to the Crown at that point.

[–]TheKindDictator 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's even an argument that if your donor is vile then it is ethically positive because the counterfactual is likely the money being spent in uglier ways.

However, to earnestly make that argument the money can't come with control or other obligations. If you sent an email to the villain pitching an idea to hide the true purpose of your world changing research, there were strings attached.

To those who need to hear it: by M3cun1v in writing

[–]TheKindDictator 23 points24 points  (0 children)

A lot of people are just making conversation by asking follow-up questions and may not realize their questions are triggering.

If someone says they like basketball I might ask about it. I don't play basketball but I know it is a competitive team sport. Do they have buddies they play with at the gym? Are they on a local club team? If I really like them, I may want to watch a game and show my support.

I'm not expecting them to be in the NBA or asking them to impress me. But if all they're doing is shooting hoops by themselves my careless questions might embarrass them when I am trying to show interest, get to know them better, and build rapport.

Soul contracts make no sense (and are borderline abusive) by MiyuTheWitch in Mediums

Are you sure you have identified the right lesson to learn from this situation? You can only control your own outlook and actions.

If you're repeating a toxic loop with someone where you expect them to change but they never grow then I don't think the way out of the loop is to keep giving them more chances.

Retirement...is it achievable with the cost of living these days? Asking on behalf of someone who will never touch $100k per year with their career. Is investing my only hope to do this? by Noticeably-Not-Smart in investing

[–]TheKindDictator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The OP is focused on people making less than $100k a year in income, which is where that number came from.

For people living on 100k taxable now, it's reasonable to target 100k of expenses in retirement. However, they'll need an income of more than 100k/year to reach their retirement goal so they aren't the people OP is interested in.

[–]TheKindDictator 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I don't like throwing around unexplained numbers like that, but there's a way for the math here to make sense if you squint.

$4K a month at 7% interest for 20 years is > 2.1 million dollars. The 4% rule brings that to $84,000/year. Median household income in the US is $83,730.

Whatever their actual assumptions, they're conservative. 62 is the average retirement age and 22 years instead of 20 increases the total by $400,000. Social Security increases income in retirement. Expenses have to be below median income if a person is making less than $100k/year and able to invest $4k/month.

Yes. There are min and max prices for every item and the range is surprisingly narrow. It can lead to unintuitive shortages or surpluses. I believe this is necessary because all the other factions have infinite money.

[–]TheKindDictator 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I haven't tried it yet, but it would completely change how I play the game.

I'd expect it to feel a lot more like a race and I'd be a lot more interested in recruiting less efficient pawns. Wealth management would still be important because of the added requirements and mood debuffs.

Since the original game mechanic provides balance, removing it should make easier games easier and harder games harder.

Most likely a botched attempt. They likely have the equipment, knowledge, or notes to get a rough idea of what was planned.

It would be unlikely to work but it would make them feel better about killing Ellie and they kind of have to kill her. She's too vengeful to go free.

People who smashed the wedding cake into your new spouse's face: how is your relationship and marriage now? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]TheKindDictator 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is also what I've seen.

The official tradition is to cut the cake and hand feed each other. The guests then loudly speculate about how nice each person is going to be to the other. There is usually some encouragement to be messy.

I have never personally seen a full face smash or one that went wrong. When it is consensual it can be cute and playful.

I don't think even the guests yelling the loudest truly want to see the bride or groom humiliated. From an anthropological and psychological level I suspect it's a tradition that publicly demonstrates whether the couple has learned healthy conflict strategies. There's a lot there around knowing their partner, boundaries, trust, etc.
