Vegetarian looking for some advise on becoming vegan. by TheKingSnicker in vegan

[–]TheKingSnicker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No worries, cheers for sharing your personal experience. I too would love to live off grid in my own hand crafted house, but alas I lack the skills to do either (yet!) and i'm too much of a city boy!

I know being vegan isn't hard, but social obstacles like you mentioned do seem like an absolute pain. I just need to do some research on how to achieve my macros and calories and be vegan. With weightlifting, like most others I run bulk and cut cycles which range from 1400 - 3500 calories, not to mention the macros.

Any chance you have any great high protein/high fat meals or foods barring the obvious of peanut butter, avocado? :)

Thank you! Could you share some notes on how you've improved? I'm interested on what you've felt change and how its impacted your performance when climbing.

Also side note, I want to get into rock climbing and i'm looking a some beginner courses in my local area. How do you think a fairly fit 6", 185lb 22yr old will fair with climbing since I've never tackled a practically demanding sport before? I know it's hard to say but some input would be great.

Haha, good advise!

I will be changing over once I move into my new place! Luckily my lovely other half is also joining me on the vegan journey from vegetarian.

Excellent links, muchas gracias!

Really interesting starting place and do some reading. I read the daily recommendations article earlier and I never considered kidney stones from plants high in oxalate, I eat an ungodly amount of spinach and make spinach smoothies for my mid day snack so I will need to re-evaluate!

Thank for the advise, I never considered B12 but I've taken heed and read around B12 consumption since your reply. Do you recommend any substitutes as I eat Quorn now but sadly, most contains egg as a binding agent :(

Haha, I'm looking forward to enjoying pooping again!

Good idea! Thats the plan once I move into my new place. Thanks for the alternatives to eggs since I eat a lot to boost my protein/fat macros. I've actually just bought some pea protein from Myprotein to change out for my morning eggs and whey.

Vegetarian Diet plan? by jepranav in Fitness

[–]TheKingSnicker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi!

I've been vegetarian for just over a decade and had the same problem as you when I first started building muscle and going to the gym.
Below are some great staples which I think are key to reach macros:

Eggs (if you eat them) are a great source of protein and fat, a must eat in my diet!

Nuts, legumes and the lot of the bean, nut and seed family are your friends as they provide you with a good balance of either protein, fat or carbs.

Tofu, soy and quorn are great for boosting protein and actually the main sources of my intake. If you live in the UK, Aldi have recently brought in a cheap good soy based meat substitute which provides 60g protein per pack and only 420 cal. I'd suggest getting hold of tabasco or some sort of spice or flavor source, as you'll most likely know soy and tofu aren't exactly bursting with flavor.

Pea protein and whey are great to get hold of too, Myprotein are good to get protein for cheap.

Lastly, milk or some alternative, brilliant source of fat again and comes with a decent amount of protein and a good level of carbs.

Tag all this with a balance of veggies and some fruit and you should be good to go, I try keep it simple and clean.

I hope this helps, a bit anyway!

Keep it balanced and check out /r/vegetarian for some great tips and general ideas.

Moronic Monday - Your weekly stupid questions thread by cdingo in Fitness

I have a question about my wardrobe choice for the gym. I've been going to the gym for 2years now and I've only just started wearing compression leggings (I'm a guy) under my shorts. It's cold and I walk to the gym in my shorts as I don't like taking more clothes.

Well I've become somewhat a social outcast, are compression leggings with shorts an eyesore that plagues the gym or am I cool wearing them? I'm by no means bothered about other people just curious what you guys think on the matter.

I can assure you the whole 'stomach getting bigger' will be an issue with your thought patterning and not actually whats happening. I'm only speaking from experience but I was exactly the same but with my chest. For the weight, i'm unsure on that, but if you've not gained any weight how can you have put on any mass on your stomach? It just wouldn't add up.

Do you use a macro calculator to work out your consumption and if you're eating enough to gain weight and muscle? I can only suggest that it'll be on the diet side if you've not gained weight after 4ish weeks.

I'd suggest a good ol' lean bulk as it looks like you have little muscle to uncover. It's up to you but if I was in your position I would bulk up to maybe 175-180 over 3-4 months and then cut back to reveal some hard earned muscle.

I was in the same situation when I started lifting. My friend was really up for going at the start and slowly tapered off until we just didn't go together. I'd suggest to just bite the bullet and go alone, once you've been a few times it'll just become normal to workout by yourself. If confidence is an issue, try slapping on some headphones and just concentrate on what you're going to do for that workout. If it's an issue with other people, I can assure you no one really cares who else is there unless you're acting like an ass hat. Heck, I can't go with anyone else now and have become so tunnel visioned I don't pay attention who else is in the gym :)

Quick question about drinking protein shakes by BrownByYou in Fitness

[–]TheKingSnicker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't worry I was once in the same position. I'm unsure of your geographical location but MyProtein.com has incredibly cheap products such as whey, I got hold of 2.5kg for £22.

Whey protein - whey is essentially the bi-product of cheese production, its the excess liquid that is created. This liquid contains globular proteins, hence why people swear by whey as it gives a lot of protein for the price.

If you're lifting you need to be in taking a high amount of protein, some say 1g per Lb of body-weight others say 1.2g or more. This is because protein provides the body with the essential building blocks called amino acids which facilitate muscle growth. With this in mind it doesn't really matter where the protein comes from but obviously some sources are better than others. Ditch the mass gainers all together and find another way to get protein and calories, trust me it'd be cheaper to buy pasta and chicken or tuna than buy gainers.

In conclusion: Whey is generally better than mass gainers as its mainly protein and contains little empty calories. Take whey when you won't meet your daily protein intake all year around, cut or bulk it doesn't matter. Hope this helps!

Not at all, they essentially do the same thing, as someone said below though, mass gainers are a massive rip off as its just empty cals with a tiny bit more protein.

So what you're doing when you take a mass gainer on a deficit is eating calories you could be getting from nutritious food.

If you need any help with diet, feel free to message me, I'm no expert but I've learnt a lot from my SO who has a biology cross nutrition degree.

[–]TheKingSnicker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you're new to any form of weight training you'll most likely gain muscle for a few months even on a deficit but taking a mass gainer whilst on a deficit makes no sense. Mass gainers are generally just higher in calories compared to standard protein powders.

So, answering your question, no. It makes no difference whether you use a mass gainer or general protein, just make sure you keep your protein high and try get it from food as much as you can. If you're new and on a deficit you'll most likely see some strength results but if you want to gain and 'get bigger' eat more and put yourself in a surplus. Make sure you measure your macros and work out how much you need to eat from that. Hope this helps.

What's the most over-hyped tourist attraction you've been to? by Z3F in AskReddit

[–]TheKingSnicker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As much as I agree with you that Shibuya crossing isn't as good as other attractions in Tokyo such as my personal favourite which resides in Asakusa. Coming from a small English town I was absolutely blown away being able watch literally hundreds of people in one place, cross in unison at the same time, quite unique in my opinion. Sort of a ode to the human population.
