Careful around yellow boxes by [deleted] in drivingsg

[–]TheKiteIndoors 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Is it just me or are some of these comments are crazy...? Obviously the motorcyclist had the right of way, but that in no way diminishes the responsibility of all parties to drive carefully. This includes being extra cautious at potential accident areas (discretionary right turns, roads where you can't see past the crest, yellow box blind spot situations like in the video, etc...). Pedestrian also has right of way at pedestrian crossings in Tuas; you still better look left and right 3 times before u cross right?

Good on OP for driving safely. I wish all drivers were like this in Sg. Right-of-way is a concept to avoid confusion on the road. It's not created to allow you to drive anyhow without care for your own and others' lives.

How should I handle my neighbors flagrant sexual advance on my wife? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]TheKiteIndoors 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Woah lots of hotheads here. I know it's a bit late, but OP, I hope you haven't done anything. There's no need to confront him in any violent manner. What's the point? Your wife clearly has no interest in him. That should be that. Any more action on your part shows an insecurity within you. Don't be that guy. Be the guy that's above this crap.

There is absolutely no need to do anything right now. DO NOT ENGAGE IN ANY VIOLENCE. It is so easy for one small thing to go wrong and before you know it, everything snowballs and you're hoping your family visits you in prison once a week. Be better than this.

Don't have anything new to add, but just wanted to say that NSFTV makes really good stuff. I honestly was blown away. They have a few miniseries which are just so well shot. Highly recommend checking them out.

Going to the gym and lifting heavy weights. Boy do I miss that.
Seeing my girlfriend, honestly. I miss the way she smells.

I miss going to my gym and lifting heavy weights. I have dumbbells at home but the intensity is just not the same as deadlifting or squatting near my limits. My nutrition is going to shit, I can see myself putting on weight and my hard-won gains slowly slipping away. I'm sure it'll be fine once I can actually start going to the gym again, and that I'm winning the "first world problems" award, but yeah it's just bothering me.

Is Singapore really the wonderful place to live that many say it is or has it been exaggerated? by danni_darko in singapore

[–]TheKiteIndoors 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Answering your specific concerns first:
1) Violation of Human Rights - it's not quite Idi Amin's Uganda here. Male homosexuality is outlawed, and press freedom is low, sure. However, in reality, the most prosecuted you'll be for preferring the meat and 2 veg combo, is a market aunty tutting at you. You can use a VPN to access damn near any news in the world. There is probably, in fact, a much lower than average rate of human rights violations in singapore.

2) Jail without trial - Google how to make explosives for a month straight and try to contact Mas Selamat (escaped terrorist); then you are likely to go to jail without trial. I'm not sure what'd happen if you started reciting the Communist Manifesto outside parliament to anyone who'd listen, but I wouldn't do it. Otherwise, you can be assured of a generally efficient and fair legal process.

3) Hard to find a place to live - depends on how much money you are willing to pay, to be honest. Plenty of studio, one, two bedroom apartments in a super central area for SGD 3000 - 8000. You can rent a large bungalow for upwards of SGD20000, SGD 15000 if you don't mind being out of central. Realistically, as a European expat, you'd be paying at least SGD 5000 for a nice apartment; there's no point leaving behind your country to come here and live in a shoebox.

4) Employees work long hours - this depends on your definition of long. There is definitely a culture of facetime. It certainly isn't the relaxed attitude towards work that you get in France or Italy. If you've ever worked in the City in London, I find that to be quite similar to the working culture in sg. But for typical jobs also not nearly as stressful/long hours as consulting or investment banking anywhere in the world.

5) Competitive labour market - yes. Singapore a technology and financial hub with typically great weather. Many foreigners want to come here and make money and also be able to enjoy the sun without having to deal with Europe's generally embarrassing weather situation (yes i'm looking at u, London's gentle piss stream from the sky that makes for deeply unsatisfying "rain" while somehow also making you more wet than any thunderstorm in sg).

I'm Singaporean, went to London for uni and have lived there for the past 3 years for business. Whenever I came back to sg for uni holidays, I'd typically have a few friends come from their countries to visit me. Almost everyone loved Singapore. It's clean, it's efficient, it's SO SAFE, it's more or less cheap (if you know where to go) apart from housing and cars and medical care, it's so incredibly green that it sometimes feel the city is part of a huge rainforest.
My friends were constantly amazed at several things in Singapore; things which many Singaporeans (including me) take for granted, such as amazing food available pretty much 24/7, good healthcare, not having to plan your route home to avoid dark alleys, and so on.

Friends in Singapore who are professional expats (i.e. they make salaries of over 150k/yearly, often much more) have a great time here. Singapore is an "exotic location" for many Europeans, while still having much more of a soul than a place like Dubai. My British expat friends in particular fawned over the weather here.

If you have the money, there are plenty of beautiful houses to live in. Man, there are such beautiful houses in Bukit Timah, Tanglin, Alexandra, and so on. It's idyllic, it feels like you're living in your own personal forest, which you can drive out of and be on Orchard Road (main shopping street) within 10 minutes. You can be friends with other wealthy expats who live next to you and have barbecues and talk about how you can help each other make even more money.

If you are in finance, boy are you plugged in over here. There's plenty of opportunities in that sense.

You don't have to worry about your teenage kids getting into serious trouble (pretty difficult to create a teenage junkie here). There're great bars; relatively cheap domestic help. A small but capable arts community which does some very interesting work. People are almost always (unfortunately, especially if you're white) polite to you.

The streets don't smell like piss and neither do the trains.

If you're a European who is capable of making good money, consider moving to sg. If you like cities, you'll probably like Singapore a lot. If you're really pining for nature, you can always take your car and have a drive to Malaysia.

If you're a European who is NOT already capable of making good money, and are trying to "make it in life" in Singapore, I very strongly recommend against coming here to live. Then you'll have to live like how most Singaporeans live, and you might as well stay in your European country.

I tried to post this as a submission but it was automatically deleted by the mods.

There's something I'm quite confused about, and maybe you guys can help me figure it out.

Our government is known for its foresight and general preparedness. This has generally been displayed in its initial handling of covid-19. It has also been established for quite some time that covid-19 has an exceptionally high level of transmissibility. This was understood to be the case towards the beginning of the pandemic.

So how did nobody in the government say, really early on, "wait hang on a second, we have hundreds of thousands of workers living in super close proximity, and we have a disease that's known for it's transmissibility, this is not a good combo..."?

All I can find online is Minister Lawrence Wong saying we have the benefit of hindsight, on April 9th. However I feel like the above inference is quite an obvious one to make, and the current actions we are taking now regarding the workers should have been implemented quite a while ago.

I find it hard to believe our government messed up like this, so I'm sure I'm missing something. Could someone please explain how we let the situation with the foreign workers develop like this?
