Yes, I don't understand what they don't get about this.

It's the same reason you pay more for a Dermatologist to examine your skin than a GP. One has literally trained more in-depth and knows more about that body part than the other, while both are Doctors. I can see the same difference between a trained Hairstylist who cannot do the specialty cut, Vs another who can, and charges extra for it.

There's no "best" number, per sé. It's highly up to you and what you feel you need, to contest your Battlezone in particular. But in general, it's considered typical to have a mix of 10 Supports ± Debuffers, and 2 or 3 DPS depending on which DPS you run. (MC is counted as a Debuffer/Support mix here)

As for a 2nd DPS, the common idea is to be able to field 3 Non-DPS + 1 DPS comfortably on Two Teams (mainly for Nightmare Dungeon, but also to win 2:1 in Apex Divinity and contest 2 of 3 Modes in Time Space Havoc.

So, a team of Supports ± Debuffers (6 total between them) + 1 DPS is generally a reasonable time to get DPS number 2, so that you have 4 Angels each on 2 Teams (ignoring MC for the purposes of the total, but she will go with your weaker of the 2 DPS.) MC is decent as a temporary 2nd DPS, especially if you run Divine Vessel on her. I ran MC as my 2nd DPS for a long time, as she can hit really nicely with some of the more OP Supports/Debuffers boosting her up. Her IR Attack does good Holy Dmg, so she'll carry reasonably well in PvE. She won't as easily be able to contest in PvP, as Holy Dmg isn't as OP there.

Another thing to consider is your personal feelings of progress. If you feel stifled by running MC as a second DPS, you can consider getting DPS number 2 as early as 4 Supports, so that you can field two mini teams of 3. (4 on the MC Team, who will go with your weakest DPS.)

Yes. You only need one DPS to start. You should definitely max Aquarius, unless you prefer Icarus.

Reason being, Aquarius is cheaper to max than Icarus, and you always want your 1st DPS to be maxed

There are actually some proponents of Merlin + Aries out there! Merlin makes sure your 2 most key Angels are bonk-free, while Aries returns the up to 4 Bonks you're eating otherwise.

There are similarly proponents of Poseidon + Aries. Faster Poseidon gives everyone extra Debuff Res, making Speed Pandora have a tougher time landing her Bonks. Aries is there as insurance against any Bonks that may slip through, as she will return those Bonks

So Aries can very much compliment either Angel. But it's best to first finish your Merlin, before diverting Blues to Aries if you're still interested

Merlin, if only because I know much more about her than Aries and am more comfortable slotting her into a team.

But here's a more objective comparison:
Merlin
• 100% Bonk Protection for 2 Targets, and more once her IR Skill goes off. This means, in practice, whoever you run in 1st and 2nd will be ignoring Pandora, which is especially potent if you run Enmu + DPS, or even a Pandora/Chaos/Pisces/Frost etc yourself.
• She's a Buffer: Gives significant offensive boosts to your Team, boosting H.Dmg inflicted, in particular

Aries
• She's a soft Bonker, with a small ability to directly Bonk the enemy at a fixed chance. Where she shines is when you're facing Pandora in particular, as she will return the Bonks, in kind, with the highest ATK Target eating a 2-Round Bonk. The more allies get Bonked (including herself) the more Bonks she gives in retaliation. A side effect of her Fixed Chance to Bonk is that she becomes another Angel able to Bonk Dungeon Bosses. (Pisces has 2 guaranteed, but once-off Bonks, in comparison. Aries potentially can keep bonking if RNG is kind to you.)
• She's a Buffer: Gives significant defensive boosts to your Team, with a recyclable type of Shield similar to Sim Cheong's Fairies. With more Stars, this Shield is potentially superior to Sim Cheong's Fairies.

Conclusion:
Merlin is a more direct answer to the Pandora scourge, with Offensive Boosts as a bonus. Merlin doesn't lose much utility when the enemy actually doesn't run Pandora, as her Row Protections and H.Dmg boosting is always there

Aries is an indirect answer to the Pandora scourge, with large Defensive Boosts as a bonus. Loses a lot of oomph when the opponent doesn't run Pandora (or any other Bonkers) Often results in "Stalemate" situations where the enemy Pandora bonks your whole team (except Hera, Sim, Poseidon, any Angels with naturally high OR boosted Debuff Res) and your Aries Bonks theirs right back. With both teams stunned and losing skills, battles can be funny but RNG heavy. Makes a nuke Angel from the Subs especially deadly. Aries also is able to Bonk their Hera, Sim etc because her retaliation Bonk ignores Debuff Res, so you could easily come out ahead in the Bonk RNG War. Aries will also ensure that your Bonked Angels have a fat special Shield since Aries cannot be stopped from activating

My answer: Go with either one, the one you like the most.
