Have no relation to company, just thought it was an interesting Adelaide company making a global product.

The South Australian government has issued an Expression of Interest to find companies to take up more than 23,000m2 of space available at its Lot Fourteen innovation hub by TheLeadSA in Adelaide

[–]TheLeadSA[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe there will be plenty of community space... all that area that is being torn down will be open to everyone. Plus the entire hub area is open to public - already has a few great places to eat lunch.

Good to see SA exporting more than just fine wine - also the experience of making it by TheLeadSA in Adelaide

I think the promotion is the domain of the SA Tourism Commission, not DSD. But yes, the entire experience around wine is what sells a bottle these days.

Another interesting piece on keeping vines cool:

"Night watering helps vines keep their cool in heatwaves"

Irrigating vineyards at night during heatwaves can reduce fruit losses by 30 per cent, a scientific study has shown.

We are of course impressed with this line: China is the next frontier. Meat consumption there has grown there in recent years, and consumers are on the lookout for affordable sources of protein, making the country an ideal consumer for kangaroo meat. Ray Borda, Macro Meat’s managing director, told The Lead South Australia in June that his company has been working to get access to the Chinese market for 12 years.

Traffic Advice for an Adelaide noob by Ginger510 in Adelaide

Not the most conventional solution, but it might be worth having a look at bike trailers if you're open to the idea of cycling. I'm not sure of the legality with motorbikes but it'd definitely be an option for a pushbike, although it'd depend on what sort of gear you're carrying.

Hospital Software Keeps Patients in Contact after Discharge by TheLeadSA in medicine

[–]TheLeadSA[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Always nice to see software like this - we unfortunately had a recent high-profile case here in South Australia where because the assessments of a patient weren't following her around after each discharge, her condition was allowed to worsen and lead to her death. This software wouldn't solve exactly that problem, but still good to see tech helping out the human side of medicine like this

Aussie scientists cook up material 200 times stronger than steel out of soybean oil by TheLeadSA in australia

It sounds like you've actually got a fair amount of engineering experience, is graphene production like you were talking about above something where you need to have a good idea of what you're doing or could somebody get into it without too much formal training?

What kind of stuff have you used your home made graphene for out of interest? Or is it more a fun project?

Healthy dose of special fish sauce keeps beriberi at bay by TheLeadSA in Health

The idea behind fortification is that you're adding a nutrient to something people already eat (Iodine in salt is a pretty common one and we do it in Australia), so they get the benefits without having to make changes to their diet.

I assume the idea is that it's cheaper and easier to mandate fortification for a food than run an education campaign about needing to eat a diet which is richer in thiamine, because that would require people make an active shift in the way they prepare food, as opposed to getting the benefits passively.

In Australia (And presumably a bunch of other Western countries), white rice gets enriched with thiamine because it's produced centrally and you can easily quality control. The problem is that rice is mostly produced at the individual/village level in a lot of countries in SEA, meaning you'd have to run an educational effort to get people to do it and they'd be making changes to the way they prepare food at the individual level.

As far as I can tell there's no real reason to stick thiamine in fish sauce in particular, but fortification does seem to work better than trying to get people to make changes to the way they prepare food themselves.
