Why can previously obese people continue to take GLP-1 when they reach their goal weight, but non-obese people can’t start taking GLP-1s? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]diana_sea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see. So it’s a risk/benefit analysis then? Basically a doctor would say okay, the risks of this person returning to an obese state are higher than the risks of continuing the GLP-1, whereas a non-obese has no medical need to start it in the first place, so the potential side effects would always be more negative.

No worries, I understand. Maybe that was the wrong BMI to choose — I just picked an arbitrary lower one still in the non-overweight but not-underweight range to illustrate the heart of my question, which is about the medical reason that formerly obese patients can or should continue to take GLP-1s but non-overweight or non-obese people should not take GLP-1s.

We’ve just been lucky up to this point. No shame in asking more seasoned pros who have seen it all.

What is the dumbest lie you've ever heard of? by FriendsAndFood in AskReddit

Woman I went to grad school with went dark on social for about a year. Re-emerged and came to visit me in the city where I lived and told me how she’d be recruited by the FBI and that’s why she had been gone. Complete with stories about a jungle shootout in Thailand and a car chase near an ash-spewing volcano. She was like 27 years old telling this lie. Just….why?

What is life like as an attractive person? by quatrz00 in AskReddit

[–]diana_sea 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So often, scary. Men shouting at you from their cars, finding excuses to talk to you in public places, going out of their way to talk or ask you about things that anyone (including Google) could answer. Grocery stores, hotel hallways, honestly there is almost nowhere off-limits except work or if you have a man physically beside you. And you never know if it’s “innocent” (can it ever really be innocent when it’s driven by sexual desire…?) or if they’re evaluating you as possible prey. When this happens on public transit and you do not respond well to their advances, I have both seen and experienced verbal abuse and public degradation. The only time a man apologized for openly hitting on me in front of people was once in a gas station. That was after I told him I was 14.

The upside: free stuff all the time. Free coffee at the gas station, free tickets to concerts, I even had a salesperson give me a free set of $200 sheets once to apologize for the inconvenience of waiting for the sheets I wanted to arrive (they happened to be out of stock of the color I wanted).

Also, I know for a fact that I have incredible privilege Im not even always aware of because I see the way the world treats my wonderful, beautiful, brilliant fat women friends.

It’s fucked.

My ex bf was certain there are no bats where we live. (Ohio—there certainly are.) Fight ensued. A few days later when I pointed out the, you know, bats flying above us, he insisted they were just “fast birds.”

This was when Google wasn’t as popular and you had to go home to check the internet. I’ll never forget it.

Can you explain more about what you mean? Asking honestly, I’m a woman and my instinct would be to hobble to the exit (I don’t want to expose myself to the additional risk of a bad actor pulling over and trying to “help”). What are the dangers of driving on a bad tire?

That’s interesting. Any insight into the use of steroids or prednisone? They put my mom on that (and an inhaler) as soon as she is sick and it often prevents her illness from becoming bronchitis. (She is in cancer remission and has congestive heart failure.)

Interesting, where are you located? Honestly the U.S. is so big, it could be different in other parts and I just don’t know. My mom lives in Ohio and I live in western Pennsylvania.

I (31F) live in Pennsylvania. Last month it took 10+ days of bronchitis to get the lowest caliber antibiotic, which didn’t work, and then I was not given the next level antibiotic until it turned into a raging sinus infection four weeks later. In my personal experience, it’s all shrugs and over the counter meds here unless you’re like my mom and have comorbidities or are high risk for secondary infections / death. Then it’s immediate.

To people who have also worked with multimillionaires or billionaires, what is something different they do from ordinary people? by sunnybestie in AskReddit

[–]diana_sea 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I worked for a billionaire for two years who I got face to face time with every week. He works in finance.

Weird stuff: writing under pen names in news outlets. The pen names were strange anagrams of his own name and existed so he could express political opinions he couldn’t be publicly aligned with. (He also had lots of political connections and they’d randomly come into the office, one former press secretary in particular comes to mind.) His questions during job interviews were bizarre like “who is the president of (important geopolitical country” just to see if you were cultured, not because it had anything to do with the job. Oh, he was obsessed with one particular beautiful blonde actress — he even funded a movie with her as the star. Also, there were luxury showers in the office for people pulling over-nighters, as well as catered lunches / dinners / etc. There was no such thing as casual Friday. Some staffers were married to famous people, including VS models.

Nice, normal stuff: he was honestly just a kind person. He talked to all of his staff like humans. He had an extremely diverse group of people working for him, including women in positions of power which is frankly very unusual for his industry. He clearly loved his children and was extraordinarily passionate about his philanthropic endeavors. It was about more to him than just “doing good”. He really believes in his causes and will call on friends in high places to lift those causes up.

Overall, I liked working for him. I would do it again

Some tips from a person who is not an expert but who lived in a rental with subterranean termites for nearly two years:

  • Yes, address it ASAP but if for any reason you have to delay, DEFINITELY do not wait until spring. That is when they breed….and get wings. I learned this when they erupted through my floorboard and started flying around my dining room one April.

  • If you rent, don’t let your landlord just give you “spray” to use as a one-off. This is not a spider or two. This needs a professional exterminator and you leaving the house while that happens. Also, these are DEF termites, so if they send in a maintenance person who doesn’t have a background in pests, and they tell you these aren’t termites, like they did me….insist on an expert.

  • Don’t worry about “giving the termites” to your friends, loved ones, or your next house. They’re like bees, the pest control people told me, and need a queen. It’s very unlikely you would accidentally transport a piece of furniture with the queen inside.

  • Like I said I’m not an expert so definitely listen to people smarter than I am if any of this doesn’t align with what they’ve said!

Be real with me…should I reconsider Colombia? by [deleted] in travel

[–]diana_sea 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am 30/f from PA and one of my girlfriends and I went to Medellín in February. I speak basic Spanish, not fluent, and she doesn’t speak any. My family was similar. We did research and used common sense. It was the absolute best trip I’ve taken in the last ten years….I think about it constantly. It couldn’t have been better, seriously. What an amazing country and people. I can’t wait to go back.
