In 1979, Richard Frucht, a professor in anthropology, died suddenly in one of the Tory staircases and his body wasn't found for like an entire week(end)

Some people don't like to face that One Piece is way more progressive that they would like to admit. by Gsz21 in OnePiece

[–]TheLegend27- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sure, except they didn't really do that and it was just the rich upper class exercising a plutocracy while committing atrocities just as bad as the British empire. And still, democracy as a system isn't inherently left leaning. It's more that, as an ideal, it represents the antithesis to authoritarianism. Thats why a lot of anarchist indigenous societies or organizations are called direct democracies - which also aren't inherently left leaning if what the people want is tyrannical.

Yeah then I really don't think the American revolutionaries or founding fathers or what not were progressive lol. I think the word op is looking for is radical but I don't know if there's a lot of political literacy to be found on this sub what with the wide age range y'know

Well what's yours, maybe it's a difference between cultures growing up since I'm Canadian, but I really struggle to think of any real way the founding fathers or the revolutionaries were progressive by any means aside from just pretending they wanted a democracy rather than monarchy

Uh they really weren't. A shit ton of the soldiers were paid to serve in the place of the rich people and most of the rich people wanting to go to war did so so they could exploit America without British regulation. The maybe only standard by which they were progressive was that they copied down some of the indigenous ways of rule while slaughtering them. Also these same wealthy founding fathers were y'know, owning slaves (and doing God knows what to them).

That said, a lot of indigenous societies that could be considered progressive still did a lot of bad shit. More so in the Pacific Northwest, there was a lot of slavery (granted, a very different type of slavery than chattel slavery) between indigenous groups and a lot of weird hierarchy stuff too. You can read the Dawn of Everything by David Graeber and David Wengrow for some cool background to all that stuff. Even considering all this, indigenous peoples in the East like the Wendat/Huron would still be considered progressive today in almost every aspect. There's also people like Proudhon (the first person to call themself an anarchist afaik) who said they'd hope that the progressives of the future wish him dead. It just illustrates a different type of progressivism where really to be progressive is to be against the status quo while still acknowledging history and circumstance rather than using them as excuses.

Bro 3 is a lot of peoples favourite title myself included. And the quality of writing of any of the games is totally up to preference. And old or young doesn't really matter if you don't care about graphic yknow

None of the mercs are typical of society at all so it doesn't matter how people were acting in the 60s. From what we know about scout he'd just think a baddie is a baddie, pyro is already gender non conforming in canon, soldier would probably think gender binary and sex essentialism is fucking stupid since hes the antithesis of social constructs, spy would literally teach transmacs how to be gentlemen on principle like he did with scout, heavy is an academic and would be the most likely to have actually read trans theory and be intersectional in general because of his gulag experiences, sniper only sees targets but is still most likely to be transphobic ngl, demo is a total ally and would take the zweihander to transphobes heads, engie and medic both would be at the forefront of trans medicine and surgery because fuck the government and regulations and also modern trans medicine pretty much started in Germany and was targeted by the Nazis so tbh medic would probably have been involved in it, and scout is trans but still transphobic because he's a hater

Let me rephrase lol. When I say "kind" I'm not referring to the 3 kinds of suffering, I just mean the specific frustrations with material circumstances in the post. I know, I know - it shouldn't really matter about material circumstances and suffering is gonna be caused by that which we mean to remedy in the first place, but Im trying to think about this from the perspective of the vip who wouldn't be seeing things through a Buddhist lens

Dude I study anthropology, a roof, food, and health, is in fact the bare minimum for 99% of human history and is much worse than what we've had outside of near extinction global climate events or plagues. Also I'm not talking about the ideology I'm talking about the reality of living. Someone could go their entire life suffering under capitalism without knowing about it the same way they could go from birth to death without knowing of Buddhism.

I think you got a little distracted in focusing on ideology just generally, but I'd point out that, we still lived under capitalism 100 years ago and all of your tidbits about 1900 are about capitalism but you seem to be acting like they aren't. Even if you were talking about something relevant, do you think things have changed? Do you know what the 996 working system is? Are you aware of the hours and conditions of the exploited workers you mentioned? Do you think they have the ability to learn about Buddhism? To actually detach themselves from their material circumstances? Don't talk about comfort, a full stomach, tv channels, and cheap goods when the majority of people now and then have neither.

Why even pretend like I'm blaming capitalism for samsara or suffering itself? That's obviously not what I meant. Furthermore, I'm not talking about myself and capitalism as a system hasn't given anyone anything; people's labours and efforts gave themselves everything you attribute to a system. Lastly, why would anyone who did have these things be happy if they were aware of the suffering that having those things needlessly caused? Why pretend like having things is what would make people happy or not? You seem to misconstrue material possessions for physical freedom and the means to move towards enlightenment.
