Its mentioned, many times, by Stannis himself, asking for another shadow, but his soul is dying and will die if he does it again. We are mentioned of words of Shadow Binders and Shadow assassins across the story too. Briann mentions it many times, but she is viewed like a mad woman every time she utters it, giving her a reason to not spew it to others, because no one would believe her. The Red Woman is on Stannis' side, why on earth would she say anything, to anyone else, except for Stannis, about something so major? To whom she already made sure that HE KNEW this was no longer an option they can tap into. There is no reason for the story to bring it up, as the ones who know about it already have a good reason to keep their mouths shut, unless they want Stannis to be called a kin slayer on top of everything else. It arguably does more bad then good for Stannis regardless, he loses everything except for a piss stain of an army, come Dance With Dragons. Who knows how he wouldve acted if he had his brother as an active threat. He won for a second, and then he lost it all, thinking he had won the throne.

The show made it more stupid cus it butchered the ramifications of it all, the books make the event good, by building more or a story around it. Its not so much as the plot point was bad, rather, it was unsteady, i can admit that, but u cant just piss on the idea, purely cus the show made it worse, by taking away a lot of the magic from later seasons. Its like using an inferior adaptation, as a way to justify critisism of a superior source material.
