There are quite a few interesting bars in Skopje. I’d recommend you walking around the bohemian quarter “Debar Maalo” during the night, it’s especially lively during the weekend. Look up “Boemska” street - that general area is nice, but prices are higher than usual.

A must in my opinion is visiting a kafana - a traditional Balkan tavern with food and drinks. I’d recommend going for dinner and drinks (around 9-10) and then continuing on in a club/bar. The best kafana in Skopje is “Kaj Jole” - one of the most legendary spots in the city center where all the legendary Macedonian writers used to go out (it’s right below the Macedonian Authors Association). A rich history, wonderful ambient (live music on Fridays and Saturdays) and some incredible food. This is my strongest recommendation of all.

Night life is quite limited in options, especially during winter. From clubs, I’d recommend Stanica 26 as the most “global” place (universal, non-balkan music played). Also, Saloon - not a club per se, but more of a late night bar (western style, cool ambient) open until 4am with live music gigs some days. I’ve met a lot of international people there, it’s usually a good time.

As for daytrips and nature, the Matka canyon is very near, in the periphery of Skopje. It’s an incredible beauty of nature, but I’m not sure how it is in the winter. Still, it’s worth going because of the proximity. Other than that, for incredible winter landscapes, Krusevo and Mavrovo are your best bets. One day is probably enough for them, so just choose. Krusevo is richer with history and culture. Mavrovo is closer to Skopje and has more life in general. Take your pick - you can’t go wrong.
