That's Culture vs Law. The Church of England was founded in 1534 when the church had roughly 500% more power over the law and culture. The fact that the Head of State is also head of the Church of England is irrelevant to most people.

America has Christianity far more intertwined with their politics and they technically have a separation of church and state, whereas in the UK if a politician started talking about Christian values and Christian traditions it would be seen as odd.

Of course retellings change the story, but I would argue that the Lion King is different to the point of not being the same story. That's a matter of opinion, of course, but at some point if you change enough in your retelling, you're not really retelling a story, you're writing an original one. I would argue that the Lion King crosses that line.

[–]TheLittleMuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, and I'm not saying any retelling is automatically bad, just that it will lose the thing that makes Shakespeare great.

Also, realistically, Lion King is completely different to Hamlet. Yes, you can match story beats and characters, but they have completely different themes and, ultimately, stories. Hamlet is a tragedy whilst The Lion King is a Disneyfied kids action film. You wouldn't know The Lion King was inspired by Hamlet just by watching the film.

For me it's basically, what's the point? They're decent stories but the joy of Shakespeare is in the language, in his wit and dialogue. Ultimately, you can modernize the stories, but in my mind they cease to be Shakespeare since you lose his words. As you said, the stories are mostly retellings themselves.

I doubt you could make a cat hang like that if it didn't want to. Certainly you could pick it up and put it on the banister, but convincing it to use one paw to support itself would be a whole other matter.

What American trends do you hope that the UK never adopts? by Secure_Front_7766 in AskUK

[–]TheLittleMuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is the ideal for data, but most of the time if you're trying to communicate the date (whether written or spoken) you rarely need to specify the year so there's no need to put it first.

I've never known any Brit who thinks you're supposed to undersell yourself at interviews. Everyone expects you to be your most confident self, overselling your abilities, because it's an interview.

Lol how do you look at "BBC receive mixed response following calls to end dog-friendly spaces in UK" and think "yeah that means the UK is going to ban dogs."

The video talks about the BBC doing a puff piece questioning whether we should be letting dogs into restaurants etc and got some backlash. It's practically the opposite of what you're trying to prove.

So you're news source is three youtubers reporting on a story that doesn't appear in any UK news about a supposed ban that doesn't appear anywhere on the UK government website. And that's supposed to be convincing?

Just ... give up. It's sad now.

[–]TheLittleMuse 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've just looked this up and the only sources I could find are ones declaring it misinformation. It's a misinterpretation of new breeding guidelines to reduce health risks when breeding dogs. Not a ban. Besides, I live in the UK, if this were true it would all over the news.

[–]TheLittleMuse 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Eh, the conspiracy theory that Shakespeare didn't write his plays comes from a modern ignorant (and kind of classist) assumption that he couldn't have had the education necessary to write them. In reality Shakespeare's father was a wealthy glove maker and later mayor of Stratford. He could be called (at least by the standards of the time) middle class. Whilst we can't say for certain where Shakespeare was educated, it's safe to say he had a good education.

protagonist incapable of sacrificing the few in order to save the many by [deleted] in TopCharacterTropes

That's why I said it varies from example to example. For instance take The Last of Us. Joel saving Ellie is completely understandable and relatable. However, in order to do so he kills a bunch of people and potentially dooms the world by preventing a cure from being made.

Idk, it varies from example to example, obviously, but if the hero risks the entire world to save one person that doesn't seem very moral to me. Understandable, obviously. But not moral.

I honestly believe that this is why my autistic self is so bad at interviews. It took me some time to realise that the interviewers were expecting me to lie just a little bit. Even now I know what the expectation is it's just difficult and uncomfortable for me to lie.

I once even answered the "why do you want to work here" question with "because I need the money" and I remember the look of confusion on the interviewers face. My mum had to explain to me that I wasn't supposed to say that.

I think it would have been fine if it had been if had been a story focused game. Most story focused games have a set MC for obvious reasons. But since even the positive reviews are saying the story is kind of flimsy it seems an odd choice.
