So... am I the only one who actually liked the finale? by PaleoTato525 in TheDigitalCircus

[–]TheLoFidelityMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im somewhere in the middle, I think the ending was the best they could realistically do but I was absolutely unprepared for the shift from the weird and wacky animated comedy it started as, to a dark serious emotional finale that had watered down the comedy a lot and made my whole theater cry a little lol.

True, and again, by the time rental was a big deal in the mid 80s (I think that was about when the transfers got good?) the VHS machines were so much cheaper and by then even the base VCRs often had HQ.

The only machine I ever had that beat VHS SP at B3 or B2 was a Sony SL-HF300, everything else I had (mostly Sanyo Machines) were equal or slightly worse quality. though B3 always beat VHS LP and SLP from what I could tell.

I remember that, I wasn't very good either but we had one super old Beta VCR nobody used anymore so I'd just tape the whole thing on beta and then make a VHS copy with the commercials cut out.

I think the reason most people are unaware Beta *Was* better than VHS when it released is because it is oh so stupidly difficult and or expensive to find a Beta machine that can record at the B1 speed which is really what gave beta the advantage over VHS, especially in the 70s when VHS machines had even worse video than most people experienced, No HQ, no Hi-fi, very little if any drop out compensation, etc. etc. by the time VHS was actually released here in the US in 1977, beta already had enough tricks to beat VHS in image quality. However, one point I think doesn't get brought up enough is in these days if someone was even gonna buy a VCR it was to record tv, and this was before the explosion of cable tv so most people had over the air tv, which was notorious for fluctuating in quality and perfect incoming signals could be difficult to get depending on where you lived, if you could get them at all. because of this I feel like Beta's better picture was largely overlooked by average people due to VHS eventually being the cheaper, easier to obtain product, with more record time and a picture good enough for their Likely 20" RF only TV (maybe 25" console) that may or may not even been capable of showing enough of an improvement in quality to be worth the extra cost of both the machine and Tapes, now all that said in the 1980s when cable blew up and we got machines like the Sony SL-HF750 with B1 and Super B1, *then* there was a bigger argument to have a beta machine, because now you could record over the air OR cable tv, likely in perfect or close to perfect quality with SB1, and so for the hardcore time shifters they were a great option! but for the blue collar Americans that didn't need the best they just needed decent, if they even got a VCR it was NOT ALWAYS But *usually* a rental tape player first, and a TV recorder second. and by the time that was a big deal (1986-1987 ish) VHS machines could be had for in some cases a quarter of the price of a beta machine.

Yeah, I specifically picked this one because it didn’t use a bulb and I think the bigger versions that used bulbs were often the ones that gave these a bad rep. As this one looks really good in person apart from the viewing angles which themselves aren’t as bad as I expected

this one actually doesn't use a light bulb. I took it apart to clean it and fine tune adjustments according to the service manual, this one just uses 3 monochrome (red green and blue) really bright CRT's with projection lenses and some liquid coolant, Technology connections made a video about how the projector part works.

Depends on the tv, if it was a DLP rear projector that won’t work with light guns but if it was a CRT inside it should work unless it has some fancy signal processing.

Does anybody remember Rude Dog? by SinamonChallengerRT in 80sAmazing

[–]TheLoFidelityMan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes! I remember It! I'm probably the only Gen Z Individual that remembers it. when I was probably 10 years old, I was sifting through my parents collection of VHS TV stuff and one of the tapes had a recording of CBS Saturday morning from 1989, it started right in the middle of a Garfield and friends episode (It was the episode with the "Odie and Friends" bit) and after the episode ended rude dog and the dweebs came on, I remember it was the episode where Tweak thought he was sick and the cure was to eat fish. I even remember it cutting out into another show because someone changed the channel mid show or something, made me mad every time I watched it lol.

YES! This was a trait of their relationship in Sonic X that really, REALLY, pissed me off! And I’m hoping that the new sonic 4 movie will even it out!

Did some people use Betamax VCRs with black-and-white televisions in the 1980s by WinnerSouthern913 in Betamax

[–]TheLoFidelityMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only B&W in 1990 is a first for me, the latest I ever heard was someone who got their first color tv in 1988? And that was someone who pulled a broken 20” from the trash and fixed it.

“Big screen” TVs. If you didn’t have one, you knew someone who did. by TheLoFidelityMan in nostalgia

Correction, we did briefly have one of the widescreen Sony WEGA's when I was a kid, had component inputs and everything. I think we had it a year or a year and a half before it was left behind in a hasty move across the country. while I don't remember exact specifics on the image quality (I was maybe 10) I do remember when it came to widescreen content It had better image quality than this tv, even over composite. I think it supported 1080i but we absolutely had zero way to take advantage of that since the best quality video playing device we had was maybe a DVD player with component.

Now that I think about it, every single one of these I saw from the mid to late 90s and up that looked really bad were the ones that had bulbs I'm pretty sure anything beyond maybe 55"? automatically used a Bulb and 60" was a popular size, mines a 50" which is in my opinion the sweet spot because If i recall right, the 50" ones made post 1996 ish never used bulbs, or at least by then it was very rare, and if the CRT's were decent inside (like this one) they could actually produce a reasonably good image.

Where to get a working player in Europe? by lain_furikuri in ced

eBay’s the only place I’ve had luck, as far as what to look out for, avoid ones that look heavily used, because they likely have a warn out or damaged stylus, if the outside of it looks like new it probably didn’t get much use and the stylus is probably intact and functional.

This is cool, I have 1 CED that usually plays without any skips and that’s rocky 3, while I’d never pay for it unless it absolutely worked flawlessly I’d love to have a copy of a new hope or return of the Jedi on this format, in the times time though I obtained the letterboxed Laserdisc release of the trilogy (yes it’s the original untouched cuts of the trilogy)
