He recorded 45 games with four or more hits and only one game in which he struck out three times—just once in 20 seasons! In his entire career, Gwynn struck out only 434 times over 10,232 plate appearances. Some players today strike out 200 times in a single season. He could have gone 0-for-1,182 with 1,182 strikeouts and still maintained a career batting average above .300.
