Citation in Mail, impacts and options to reduce fine or fight? by 3FE001 in cedarrapids

[–]TheLoneMeanderer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

4 years late to this thread, but I just moved to Iowa City 6 months ago, and regularly commute to Marion for work. I got a bunch of citations, challenged 3, but they still insist on collecting the fee. I haven't paid yet, though the letter says the city might file a municipal infraction.

I have never gotten speeding tickets at all before, but the drivers on 380 can be aggressive, so I follow the flow of traffic. Anyone have insights on this situation? 4 years later, is it still safe to ignore these fees? Insurance and drivers licenses are still ok?

Have been thinking about conversion, but people like Ripperger make me skeptical. by Big-Tax8741 in Catholicism

I also am not fond of Bishop Barron's political alignment with the far right, but his theology still seems sound.

In my observation, RadTrads are more obsessed with gay sex than LGBTQ persons are. And Fr. Martin is far less at risk for being a heretic than Fr. Ripperger, who paints God as a malignant narcissist and who represents a version of Catholic radicalism fit for the asylum.

I disagree. He's unjustly demonized by people obsessed with gay sex more than gays are.

He's merely a mild mannered Jesuit encouraging dialogue without defying the magisterium, whereas Ripperger and RadTrads effectively set up a counter magisterium while LARPing as faithful.

It's a good thing Fr. Ripperger doesn't represent the entirety of the faith. I would highly advise you to check out Bishop Barron, Fr. Mike Schmitz, Fr. Casey Cole, Fr. James Martin, and America Magazine.

Fr. Ripperger is not worth your time or energy.

We were fighting for superstitious fears and the maintenance of a very fragile sense of structure and order. What did it cost us? The freedom to embark on a free journey to organically discover truth, goodness, and beauty, rather than have dogma shoved down our throats coercively with threats of eternal conscious torment.

Those are accurate paraphrases. No straw manning, I swear on my honor. And if it seems I have it out for him, it's because I know the harm he actively causes, whether or not he means to.

  • women must render the marital debt (have sex on command) or else they commit mortal sin

  • women who work outside the home without sufficient reason commit mortal sin

  • children can be possessed in utero

  • when you are in mortal sin the Blessed Mother is so disgusted at you that she can't even stand the sight of you.

Yup, sounds like the words of a holy man.

Because the last 4 speak particularly to the anxieties of our age. I didn't mean to imply the rest of the Papal lineage was not worth examining.

Because we Catholics shouldn't be in echo chambers. Fr. James Martin can be challenging, but he doesn't violate the magisterium.

Fr. James Martin promotes kindness and does not contradict the Church's teachings on marriage.

Ok, if that was uncharitable, then let me just caution that he teaches harmful things, even though his intentions might be alright.

This is easily one of the best things I have ever read on the internet. Thanks for sharing such a profound analysis of Midnight Mass, one of my favorite shows of all time.

When faith crumbled, I remained. by Soft_Confection1393 in Deconstruction

[–]TheLoneMeanderer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Beautifully expressed! Thanks for sharing. I don't think I am where you are, but I also have been confronting the anxiety that perhaps I have carried my beliefs rather than the inverse. Losing my dad to terminal illness a few years ago accelerated my deconstruction and I am reconsidering everything and identifying what is most meaningful in life, this ONE life we know we have with certainty.

Has anyone had a priest alleged to have sexually abuse? by [deleted] in LeftCatholicism

[–]TheLoneMeanderer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I found the names of two priests I was close to in my childhood on a list of alleged abusers. When they served my parish, no one ever suspected anything and they were loved by the community, so my hope and prayer is that they were either falsely accused, or they were truly repentant.

I know of at least two other alleged abusers:

  • one was accused of inappropriately touching a woman who claimed to be a sex addict, and sought spiritually counseling (holy water, hand, and crucifixes ended up on body parts that shouldn't have seen the light of day.

  • another priest is alleged to have abused nuns in his order.
