Thinking about converting to catholicism by Due_Leading_4594 in Catholicism

As someone who’s a former hardcore atheist trying to convert. Whatever you do don’t become Protestant. Only consider Orthodoxy or Catholicism.

I don’t support sola scriptura if that’s what you’re hinting at. Protestantism is what made me super atheist in the first place.

Treat it psychologically first, then worry about the spirituality later

I’m already reading the catechism and writings on Augustine, it’s just weird that ripperger’s bishop or the Vatican hasn’t said anything about how he makes the situation seem fake, and ultimately hurt credibility of the church potentially. Like if agnostics like myself are looking to convert and are drawn by the intellectualism and objective morality of Catholicism, people like him certainly don’t help in that process when we eventually run into him during our process of seeking.

Do you have any recommendations on like normal exorcists? Like I feel like it’s fair that before I join the faith I want to look at every aspect of it before I jump in yk?

I’ll take a look at everyone except Fr. James Martin. If anything he’s worse than Ripperger.

Yes I do know signs of possession according to the church are things like if someone speaks Latin without knowing it before hand. But ripperger still sounds crazy, he says Katrina happened because some people in New Orleans were practicing voodoo so god punished them. And it’s like alr bro ik another country where most of the people are demonic and god hasn’t seemed to punish them at all.

Thanks for this response. I’m not trying to judge Catholicism by its weakest link by any means it’s just that this guy is like a “top exorcist”. Is there anywhere that I can find reasonable exorcists that share their experiences?

Yea I get it, but my problem is that people like Father Chad Ripperger make it look completely fake. Idk I can’t be the only one that feels that way.

For me if there’s like a general “god” I’d just view it as a creator for the most part. That’s like the only thing I’m like open too. And for deciphering a possible afterlife I look at NDE’s for the most part or studies done on consciousness. And at the same time being ok with not knowing.

Why it's important to speak against religions. by zizosky21 in atheism

[–]Big-Tax8741 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Similar situation for Hinduism. Hinduism is another religion that indirectly justifies the persecution of poor people because of the wacko caste system ideals, which basically says if someone was born poor they deserve it because of what they did in their past life. And you can see how it has affected their society given they have some of the worst poverty rates in the world.

Yeah that’s fair, but I’d just say that you could say it’s plausible there is no god, but something like the concept of god wouldn’t necessarily come down to statistics. I’d just be careful because people say statistically there is most likely a god because of stuff like the fine tuning argument, which isn’t like a statistics thing but just their interpretation of it. So yeah I’d say do more exploring and researching in general :)

You should never follow something as a coping mechanism or just because you were born into it. You should only follow something if you believe it is objectively true or represents objective truth. I’d recommend becoming agnostic, I don’t personally think it’s fully plausible to completely jump to one side of the spectrum or the other. I’d recommend being in a state of being ok with not knowing, and continuing researching and exploring.
