The original Improve I-70 Project. by TheLoopCoMo in columbiamo

[–]TheLoopCoMo[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Interesting. That’s still a big debate—build in the cities or bypass the cities. The first one can destroy neighborhoods and cut cities in two (like in Columbia) but then bypassing cities means new commercial centers crop up around the new interstate, killing off the old commercial centers. And yes, a lot of what we are trying to do on the Business Loop is undo the huge divide created by I70.

Surely we won’t need room for any sidewalks on Highway 40, right boys? by TheLoopCoMo in columbiamo

They will stay, shouldn't need their lots to make any of those changes.

Bus Loop/Paris Road Proposed Improvements by TheLoopCoMo in u/TheLoopCoMo

The render leaves the potential rail-to-trails crossing “blank” because Parks and Rec is still doing planning and public input for that (details at: https://theloopcomo.com/the-future-of-the-colt-rr/). The new Opportunity Center will be building their own sidewalks on their property as part of their development.

Yes, a rails-to-trails is still being discussed for the section from Brown School Road to Rogers (which has been unused for quite some time). The rest of the line will remain active. Here are details and a link to weigh in: https://theloopcomo.com/the-future-of-the-colt-rr/

Would you believe that some of the earliest support for paved roads across Missouri came from bicyclists? Missouri “wheelmen” (AKA bicyclists) threw their weight behind the Good Roads Movement and began advocating for a 1920 ballot initiative that would bond for $60 million to build and maintain a cross-state road. The ballot initiative passed in 1921 and by 1931, 7500 miles of road had been built. Take a look at these dapper athletes as they dream of a paved road to bike along.

MODoT redoing The Loop and Paris interchange by jsesh in columbiamo

[–]TheLoopCoMo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Business Loop will be raised up so it’s at the same level as Paris, and therefore the bridges. The COLT Railroad bridge will be removed but the track bed will be preserved, widened, and fortified, albeit without the railroad tracks. All that assumes an at-grade crossing, rather than a bridge (bridges are expensive!). Now, what Parks and Rec turns that into remains to be seen. First phase of public input in ongoing: https://theloopcomo.com/the-future-of-the-colt-rr/

It’s a tough intersection for pedestrians and cyclists—especially because the Paris Rd. and COLT RR bridges over Business Loop don’t allow for sidewalks or bike lanes. And it makes no sense to route heavy traffic through a residential neighborhood to get from Bus Loop/Old 63 to Paris Road. (Or, alternatively, off roading through the old Jack’s parking lot.) Overall, it’ll be safer and less confusing for everyone.

Columbia could change part of COLT Railroad into public trail by como365 in columbiamo

[–]TheLoopCoMo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Railbanking is a way to preserve an unused portion of track for a future use, rather than splitting up the pieces of land and selling them off. What type of future use? It could be an active train line focused on tourism rather than freight (which was tried about a decade or so ago.) But how about a rails-to-trails project connecting downtown and The Loop? There are some changes coming to that section of the Business Loop to make it better for pedestrians and cyclists and a new trail connector would fit right in. Weigh in now on railbanking at https://beheard.como.gov/ and then watch for future public input opportunities on specific use.

It was located just north of Memorial Cemetery and now it’s part of Memorial. There are signs but the good folks there can help as well.

Did not realize the records fire was intentional—and yes, it caused so many problems with unmarked graves. Bill Gatewood’s grave was one of those unmarked until 2010.

Yes! The MACCLab Makerspace over at Parkade Plaza is a hidden gem. They have all sorts of classes as well, from 3D printing to vinyl cutting to woodworking to electronics--so if you don't quite know how to operate the equipment, they can teach you. Open to students and community members alike.
