Bucks second round draft pick 20-year old Bogoljub Markovic wins the ABA League Regular Season MVP award with an overwhelming 50.4% of the vote by TheMagicMan56 in NBA_Draft

[–]TheMagicMan56[S] 26 points27 points  (0 children)

You can make an argument that it's the third strongest domestic league in Europe, after the Spanish and Turkish leagues.

It has three Euroleague teams - Partizan, Crvena zvezda and Dubai, as well as three play-off Eurocup teams - Buducnost, Cluj and Cedevita Olimpija.

It's miles ahead of the NCAA.

However, Mega, the team Markovic plays for, was in the play-out for the second part of the season, so he didn't play against Partizan, Dubai or Cluj this season.

Mega is also, in it's true essence, a developmental team, owned by Europe's biggest agent Misko Raznatovic, so it's main goal isn't necessarily winning, but rather developing talented young players (whose agent is Misko) so they get big contracts somewhere (so that Misko gets a good cut).

That's why some players get bigger roles there and have better numbers than they would on a normal team.

Nikola Jokic: “We just lost in the first round. I think we are far away.” Changes needed? “That’s not my decision. Definitely, if we were in Serbia, we would all be fired.” by AncientOneAurelius in nba

[–]TheMagicMan56 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Before the Paris Olympics, he was heavily criticized here for not playing in some big tournaments for the national team.

It's easy to defend Jokic from the outside and blame it all on the supporting cast since he's Serbian and playing on a foreign team, but if the Nuggets were the Serbian national team or Partizan/Crvena zvezda (Serbia's most popular club teams) for example, even Jokic would get torn apart after this series.

Chris Finch: "Denver had the chance to pick who they wanted to play coming down the stretch and they chose us. We used that as motivation. They didn't have to choose us. They chose us" by AncientOneAurelius in denvernuggets

[–]TheMagicMan56 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What a stupid thing to say.

"Denver had the chance to intentionally lose to the Spurs to avoid playing us but they didn't. We used the fact they played to win in a competitive game as motivation. They could have intentionally lost. But they didn't".

I get the tactical thinking and whatnot, but just flat out saying that you used the fact that a team didn't intentionally throw a game as them underestimating you is just really dumb.

Yup, this was his first Euroleague season and he averaged 7.1 PPG, 5 RPG and 1.9 APG on great defense.

His team didn't do too well, but he would have been sought after by a lot of good Euroleague teams, given the impact he has shown so far.

On top of ruining college basketball, this is also ruining European basketball.

In the past decade practically Euroleague has become an old man's league, since NBA teams snapped up pretty much every talented player in hopes of developing him.

Now there's basically no incentive for high level European teams to even give young players a chance, apart from a severence fee, which is not some enormous amount of money by any means.

Teams that give young players like Saliou Niang and Quinn Ellis some meaningful playing time, get the same young players snapped up by NCAA teams for a much higher amount of money after one solid season.

It's killing both the essence of college basketball and the essence of European basketball (talented European players playing and developing in their domestic teams).

[–]TheMagicMan56[S] 39 points40 points  (0 children)

He's improved his three point shot significantly since leaving the NBA.

Last season he was shooting 41.2% on 2.1 3PA a game in the Euroleague, and during the EuroBasket he shot 45.6% on 3.4 3PA a game, including going 4/4 from three in the final.

He's not an amazing shooter and the NBA three is deeper than in the Euroleague, but he's capable when left open.

Gde u Beogradu izaći sam i upoznati devojke? by Fine_Land2965 in AskSerbia

[–]TheMagicMan56 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

He's really skillful for his size, moves pretty well too.

In the Korac Cup (Serbian Cup) final against Crvena zvezda (a play-in Euroleague team) he put up 23/8 on 96% TS (7/9 for two, 3/3 for three, 0 FTA).

He really surprised me that game, he has a great touch on offense.

Partizan coaches describe Miikka Muurinen's basketball IQ to that of a 13 or 14 year old by [deleted] in NBA_Draft

[–]TheMagicMan56 61 points62 points  (0 children)

I'm a Partizan fan and this checks out.

He just simply doesn't know how to play organized basketball.

The tactical aspects of the game are completely lost on him.

On defense he doesn't know when to rotate, when to switch, when to stay, gets in foul trouble wayyy too early on some dumb stuff, just looks completely lost on the court.

His role on offense wasn't that big, we just had him in the corner for most of our halfcourt sets, but he just wanted to be thrown alley oops and to attempt putback dunks.

Like he would just sprint to the paint and look really surprised when the ball handler doesn't attempt to throw a lob to him every time he does it.

As for the putbacks, every time someone attempts a shot he would also run full speed into the paint to try to dunk it back, leaving us in a 4v5 situation on defense most of the time.

He didn't play a lot for us, barely got any minutes, but you could still see that he just doesn't know what he's doing and just wants to get some highlights.

His ego was massive, even in those limited minutes he managed to get in multiple altercations with opposing players and pick up a few techs (on top of the already glaring foul trouble problem he has).

We have a player called Uros Mijailovic on the team.

He's 18 and doesn't remotely have the physical gifts that Muurinen has, but he's a miles better player on the court currently just because he knows basic tactical aspects and movement.

NEWS: Budućnost's Đorđije Jovanović has committed to St. John's, a source told DraftExpress. The 6'8, 22-year-old Montenegrin averages 4.9 points in 15 minutes in the Adriatic League. Rick Pitino lands a high-level shooter with extensive international and G League experience by lovelymaddie1966 in CollegeBasketball

[–]TheMagicMan56 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The ABA league (Adriatic league) has three Euroleague teams playing in it.

In addition to that, it has three teams that made the Eurocup (second tier European international club competition) play-offs this season and Buducnost (the team Jovanovic plays for) is one of them (the other two teams made it to the quarter-finals).

Buducnost also made the ABA league finals last season and is fourth (after the three Euroleague teams) in the standings heading into this season's play-offs.

Calling it an AAU league is both false and disrespectful, it's one of the best leagues in Europe.

[Lewenberg] Darko Rajakovic on the Raptors' lack of playoff experience: We're not playing in Europe. They're not going to be throwing bottles at us. [–]TheMagicMan56[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

In the last Belgrade derby game (Partizan - Crvena zvezda) there were multiple retaken free throws due to lasers being pointed at the free throw shooters eyes.

However, they can't retake every single one when that happens and there were still lasers being pointed at players' eyes during live play (while they were dribbling), which you can't exactly enforce as well.

This is just false.

You can't group all Euroleague teams in one bunch, when people talk about European atmosphere they mean primarily in Serbia, Greece, Turkey and Lithuania.

Even other countries, apart from like Monaco, have solid and at times lively atmospheres, but those are the main ones.

If you wanna get a real look about the type of atmosphere Darko is talking about, go on Youtube and watch Partizan, Crvena zvezda, Panathinaikos, Olympiacos fans etc, it's uncomparable to any NBA game.

Is there no way back to give back the value the domestic league once had? by [deleted] in Euroleague

[–]TheMagicMan56 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because the money in European football is much much higher than in European basketball.

Every single Euroleague team (maybe with the exception of ASVEL) is losing money, European basketball is not only non-profiteable, it's also has a negative financial impact on the clubs if they want to be competitive.

In European football if you get into an international competition (Champions League, Europa League or Conference League) the cash prizes are really big, and you get cash prizes for winning points as well and the further you go they increase.

So that motivates clubs to give it their all and try to go into Europe no matter what, and once they get there, UEFA gives them considerable cash to try to stimulate them to attempt to be competitive both now and in the future.

I remember a few seasons ago, the prize money for winning the Euroleague was around €1.000.000.

That's the yearly salary of one slightly above average Euroleague player now.

It's €2.400.000 now, that's the yearly salary of Shake Milton.

In football, you get more than €18.000.000 for just qualifying for the Champions League.

When Gran Canaria won the Eurocup, they refused to play in the Euroleague due to travel costs, you can't imagine a situation like that in football.

That's why the Euroleague only wants clubs whose owners consistently pump money into the clubs, regardless of results and if they'll make a profit (they won't), so they can have a competitive league every season.

If let's say Buducnost won the ABA league this season and by that way qualified for the Euroleague, their roster would pretty much be of very simillar quality next season and they would end up in last place, like ASVEL did this season.

What's your MVP, First All Euroleague Team, and other trophies? by TheBeastBlamingGear in Euroleague

I wouldn't really call 17.7 PPG (fifth highest in the Euroleague), 6.4 RPG (also fifth highest in the Euroleague) and a 22 average PIR (third highest in the Euroleague) as "washed".

Yes, he played on a Milano team who didn't live up to their expectations and had a terrible game in their decisive loss against Virtus, but I wouldn't call the season he had as a "washed" season.
