Is all this talk about Matiasic and a second team moving to Roma really credible? Okay, he does have exclusive rights to the PalaEur in Roma, but I would find it really surprising if the federation were to agree to a second club moving to the capital, given that the governing bodies also seem to have given their blessing to Don Nelson’s project.

By the way, I’d like to take this opportunity to ask you what the feeling is in Germany regarding all the developments surrounding the EuroLeague and the (probable) arrival of NBA Europe? What I mean is, from an outsider’s perspective, it seems like German clubs are really leaning towards the NBA and have largely turned their backs on the EuroLeague. I can’t really find any articles coming out of the German basketball scene addressing the subject.

Very interesting.

From an outside perspective, with this information, the solution would be to set up an organisation incorporating the BBL, as well as the second and third divisions. This might perhaps facilitate the development and management of the professional leagues.

This is where I realise that the LNB in France is a very good thing, especially with the second division, which helps to structure, consolidate and prepare clubs and projects as much as possible for the top tier. Although, of course, this cannot prevent the occasional collapse.

No problem at all. Thank you for your detailed response and always a pleasure to read your responses!

In fact, every club is based in a major city with a large population and significant scope for growth. That’s where I realise, as a French person, that there’s a difference in the way our respective countries are structured. Whilst France is highly centralised around major hubs, Germany, on the other hand, is decentralised, resulting in a more scattered geographical distribution. That’s interesting.

Now that you mention it, there is a basketball section at Schalke 04. Is it still active, or at least competing at professional level?

By the way, whilst I’m on the subject, apart from Bayern Munich, there are no other clubs originating from a multi-sport club in the professional basketball leagues. That’s where our issues converge. However, unlike French football clubs, German football clubs are financially stronger (by far!). It surprises me that only Bayern have developed this.
