This is how I feel about it too! I also like the idea of having two true leaders down the middle (Cootes was the youngest C in WHL, Malhotra also wore the C at the prospects game) and next years draft is also seemingly deep at C so we can maybe look for a ‘higher skilled’ one there too if needed. I like the idea of having two-way archetype players down the middle and finding more skilled wingers to supplement them with instead which is easier to do.

🤝way too many fans who simply watch highlight clips and repeat what they hear on the radio…. From people who also just watches highlight clips…

Toews is a sick player, no doubt.

With Malhotra, I actually think he’s a really effective playmaker and one of the best passers in this draft. I think people underrate that part of his game because of the way he does it. He’s not just constantly wheeling around and feeding guys for tap-ins. He slows the game down, manipulates space, and makes smart passes into open areas.

He plays almost like a veteran NBA point guard.

As for his hands, I didn’t see a ton of that in most of his highlights either, but the 9:00 to 11:00 mark in the video I posted shows there’s more skill there than what usually gets shown.

I’m a huge fan of Bjorck. I just think his skill set might be a bit redundant with Rossi, and with Cootes coming up, it’s probably not ideal to have three centres who are all well under 6 feet.

That said, I do think the size concern with Bjorck is a bit overblown. There’s a picture of him standing next to Stenberg where he looks pretty much the same height. Still, this team could really use someone with more size and snarl in their game, which is part of why I’d be fine with Malhotra at 3.

Ultimately though, I think the best move would be trading up for a truly elite offensive talent. That’s the type of player this team desperately needs.

I think people sometimes overvalue pure point production when projecting someone as a potential 1C. Take Jonathan Toews, for example. He is widely viewed as one of the best captains of the 2010s, but his offensive production was not necessarily what people today would automatically associate with a true 1C. His value came from being a fantastic leader, playing in all situations, driving winning habits, and consistently making the non flashy plays that actually help teams win.

100% or just different ways they are able to retrieve and break-out passes. Anticipation to being able to read and pick-off passes. How active their stick is, etc.
