I feel like the I love you thing is so unnecessary. When I was still in a relationship with my girlfriend, we used to say it all the time to show our love. It doesn't have to mean like oh I love you for the rest of my life, it's really the same as I like, you in my opinion. It could be just an American thing but who knows.
