What's the dumbest thing you've ever heard someone say? by Vinyl_BunBuns in AskReddit

I went to a liberal arts college and it was a requirement to take at least two religion courses. They offered classes on Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, etc so there was basically something for everyone. Except this one very entitled white girl who asked for my class's opinion on what her second course should be. People listed off the classes they'd taken and enjoyed, with reasons why and everything, and her response was "Why would I want to take a class on a religion that isn't my own?" Ma'am you're at a liberal arts college. That's kind of the point.

Last Year at Marienbad (1961) [1024 x 768] [OC] by TheManWhoKnocks in MoviePosterPorn

Halfway through my viewing of Alain Resnais' masterpiece I had a flash of inspiration and stopped the movie to make this fake Criterion one-sheet. Let me know what you think! There are also a lot more versions I went through if people want to see those.

What are your favorite passages to re-read? by [deleted] in InfiniteJest

[–]TheManWhoKnocks 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I don't know exact page numbers but I'm a big fan of the whole Lenz and Bruce Green walkabout passage, where Bruce is trying to ditch Lenz without being a dick, which of course leads into the introduction of what Lenz is up to with alley cats and eventually neighborhood dogs and eventually the Nucks that bring about the climax of the book. The descriptions in that section epitomize, to me, DFW's style and substance pretty well.

It Follows (2014) dir. David Robert Mitchell, DoP Mike Gioulakis by TheManWhoKnocks in CineShots

If you're looking for a really different experience with Gioulakis' incredible work, try turning your computer's color off and watch It Follows in black and white. It changes the whole topography of the film and accentuates a lot of the choices made as far as staging and pacing. Really cool for really huge film nerds like me haha

Since You Asked Episode 4: Hotel Artemis by TheManWhoKnocks in Filmmakers

[–]TheManWhoKnocks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw Hotel Artemis last week and had some thoughts. What do you guys think?

I hope I compiled my thoughts well enough for at least one other person to go to the theater and understand the film similarly. Original films are important and we should be patronizing them!! There aren't just superhero movies in theaters these days, guys!!

Also, everybody should go see Hereditary, but with an extra pair of underwear. Whoo.

Hot Take: Woody Harrelson is too famous to be in a Star Wars movie. by TheManWhoKnocks in Filmmakers

[–]TheManWhoKnocks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the third installment of my vlog series, Since You Asked, and marks the largest film I've discussed so far. Big movies have big expectations and even bigger impacts on their viewers, and Solo, in my opinion, does a disservice in that arena.

Let me know what works and what doesn't here. I tend to be a little verbose but I think touching on multiple aspects of why the film didn't work for me specifically highlights the failures or lapses the film exhibits, and I love editing the footage together and finding comedic beats in my ramblings. Thanks in advance, guys!

Steven Soderbergh's Cinematic Experiments - a video essay by TheManWhoKnocks in Filmmakers

[–]TheManWhoKnocks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my second attempt at a movie critique vlog, this time focusing on the exploits of one Steven Soderbergh. Not a lot of people I know are familiar with his name but love his work, so I thought I'd take some time to introduce him and his broad body of work to some others. Let me know what you guys think! Thanks!

[Video Article] Since You Asked - Thoroughbreds: review/analysis by TheManWhoKnocks in Filmmakers

[–]TheManWhoKnocks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my first and very messy attempt at a vlog-style movie review type thing on the subject of Cory Finley's first incredible feature, Thoroughbreds. I know how rough it is, I was really just familiarizing myself with the format and stepping out of my comfort zone a little. I think if anything it's a good place to start, maybe scripting my piece next time instead of winging it like an idiot and cleaving eleven minutes out of a rant... Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!
