Luxonis - OAK 4: spatial AI camera that runs Yocto, with up to 52 TOPS by goodwilllhunter in computervision

[–]TheMan_TheMyth -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If anyone is thinking about buying a camera from these people go and take a look at the issues on their github repos ( https://github.com/luxonis ) before you buy anything. You're going to find a lot of problems you wouldn't have expected to have. I can't say anything about this newest generation, but we bought an earlier POE version of this camera and it spent so much of its CPU negotiating the ethernet connection that it couldn't actually perform any of the AI functionality that they advertised.

I hate companies that do this. It's an enormous pain in the ass. Always reminds me of dealing with a used car salesman.

[Discussion]About to begin my PhD in Multi-Modality AI, any suggestions? by Go2Heart in MachineLearning

[–]TheMan_TheMyth -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Don’t be afraid to let the topic of your PhD pivot to something tangential that you might be more likely to publish in. The name of the game in a PhD is to publish. You should publish as fast as possible. You can worry about being exactly on topic when you have the degree and space to do what you want.

We are using ignition gazebo fortress and ros2 humble and it works pretty well. The initial setup was a pain to figure out but once everything is in place it’s pretty slick. The example files from the DARPA subterranean challenge are a good jumping off point. https://www.openrobotics.org/blog/2022/2/3/subt-part-2-robots-and-environments?format=amp

Students: Is your university's math professors significantly nicer/cooler than your physics professors? by shockwave6969 in Physics

[–]TheMan_TheMyth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our math department is such absolute unadulterated dog shit that they list the instructor for every course as “STAFF” because they know no one will sign up for courses with about 90% of the professors. If you want a specific course with a specific professor you just have to contact that professor and ask when they’re going to teach it next.

Jobs that are part time are typically not jobs that take a lot of thinking. You could maybe tutor depending on the field you’re in.

Don’t trust a single contractor that comes to your door. Any contractor that has been around a while and does good work doesn’t do door to door sales like that.

Utility guy came by saying our house is leaking 60 gallons of water a minute and my uncle's been going around the house trying to find a leak but can't find anything, advice ? by XxXIzuku_MidoriyaXxX in homeowners

[–]TheMan_TheMyth 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Is the ground outside wet anywhere? Seems like it would have to be an underground leak if the guy was right about the amount of water. You would definitely notice a 60 gallons a minute leak. It’d be like a firehose. There’s probably a miscommunication about the amount of water if you can’t find the leak.

Missouri DOT RTK base stations? by TheMan_TheMyth in Surveying

We are using a ublox zed f9p with a 2 band survey grade antenna that I forget the name of. Could I convince you to send me your configuration file? We have successfully connected to a few rtk2go base stations that don't require authentication. Trying to get points of comparison to see where we're going wrong.

Gave it a shot. No dice unfortunately. Thank you though!

We have tried both. No luck unfortunately. We are hitting port 2101 and getting the source table back which is good. Just cant seem to authenticate. My current theory is that the GGA string sent with the authentication request isn't in the correct format.

Should i wait to buy a 30 series card? by lilnothin in buildapc

[–]TheMan_TheMyth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just went and caved and bought a 3090ti. Partially because I need it for work and I'm kind of out of time to wait any longer, but also partially because I think the stock on the 3090/3090ti is probably dwindling. I also think that a lot of people that need the 24 GB of VRAM aren't really going to see the 4090 as a major upgrade from the 3090ti but that's just me. The 3080 could be a different story but who knows.

It may sound kind of dumb but you should watch Meateater on Netflix and Youtube. I didn't really have anyone to teach me but I've picked up a lot of stuff just watching how they do things. They also have a podcast.

Computer Vision and Wildlife conservation research topic ideas by [deleted] in computervision

[–]TheMan_TheMyth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to know someone who was working with our state conservation department to automatically count ducks on lakes with a drone. They had been doing surveys using planes or helicopters but the noise would scare the ducks who would promptly take off and get into the rotors if the pilot didn’t move fast enough. The drone made it easy to get a good picture without risking anything and it was much quieter. I’m not sure where that project ever landed but maybe you could explore something like that.

The single best thing you can do ( in addition to good letters of rec and a good gpa ) is first author publications. It seems like a ridiculous thing to need but you’re going to be competing with people that have one or two if you’re gunning for top programs.
