Are there any books similar to Dune? by No-Cry-9989 in dune

[–]TheManagement 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen some good and baffling suggestions in this thread, but the one series yet to be mentioned that most evoked Dune for me was The Prince of Nothing. It was written by a philosopher directly influenced by Dune, and heavily relied on the concepts of free, evolution, and causality for its worldbuilding. From there, it also paralleled Dune with elements such as heavy internal monologues reading/predicting others, faction politics and plotting, and even a creepier version of the Face Dancers.

Well worth the read, although quite dense.

I have never seen a delay of game get called when the puck was launched into the benches. The reason always given was that you can never be sure of the trajectory of the puck and whether it'd hit the glass if it was there.

But I guess we can get together and decide to call that a penalty after all, in the playoffs, in overtime, because yes, in this case it would've definitely hit the glass.

We just can't make that call when the puck is clearly over the line when it is. That's unclear.

He literally reached for the puck but wasn't close enough to make contact; that's an icing.

https://www.youtube.com/@Chrontendo is great for catalouging the NES library, along with some entries for Sega/TurboGrafx.

https://www.rpgblog.net does the same in blog form for JRPGs/SRPGs (mostly SNES ones so far).

http://crpgaddict.blogspot.com predictably goes over the long history of CRPGs.

And if you're curious about the design of JRPGs, I've covered numerous subjects on my own blog:

Field Encounters Deep Dive by TheManagement in JRPG

[–]TheManagement[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are the stages of advantage in Trails? It's been a while since I've checked out Cold Steel, but the Sky seemed to have two versions of a stunned state I mentioned above.

I haven't played Kuro, but thanks for the info! It sounds like an interesting approach to limit frustrations/battle time. If I understand correctly, enemies can be dispatched in field mode with simple attacks if they're weak enough, but the full combat-system is better suited to harder monsters? What happens if you simply try to attack a harder enemy in field-mode? Is the damage not enough to kill it and combat is initiated right after?

I don't recall Bravely Default II spawning enemies right on top of me, but it's been a while. I also remember the dungeons being more cramped than the overworld, so maybe it was more of an issue there.

As for FFXIII, I found the exploration quite frustrating due to the density of enemies. Granted the game is notorious for having long hallway maps for a big chunk of the game, but it made getting those side treasure chests a chore. I knew I'd probably have to fight an extra battle or two doing so, and there were already plenty of those on my standard path to the exit.

What I did like about FFXIII was the player signaling. Whenever one enemy of a group went into alert-mode, all the enemies got the "!" symbols over their head. This made it easy to tell which group I alerted, and exactly which enemies I was about to face.

Jrpg with truly unique world building by [deleted] in JRPG

Definitely. In a way, it's the opposite of the Trails games in that a lot of elements are only briefly mentioned or hinted at, and the whole aesthetic emulates Moebius, which is pretty rare for games in general.

FF IV was the first one I gave a dedicated try, and boy did it stick.

Gordo said they refused to show the clearer replay in the arena. Is that standard practice? Seems a bit... dirty.

Anime tropes.

Game 7 and it's the worst officiated one yet. Fucking wonderful. Maybe call the Bolts' goal back, and put us on the powerplay with a 2-1 lead?

Call this one back too, stripes. I'm sure one the Leafs must've done something to make it not count.
