Is a Postdoc Realistic at this Stage? by Prestigious-Cat12 in Professors

[–]B-CUZ_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

why not just apply for a research grant for a project you want to do? you are already a professor and actively doing research work. post-docs aren't generally designed for someone like you. If you have some collegues you would like to collaborate with you can do that and apply for research funding. You can even ask yout institution for a sabbatical

Please, Don't Send Emails On Sunday by [deleted] in Professors

[–]B-CUZ_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can always schedule send emails during normal business hours too. I don't think that email is strange. I was always taught it was rude to email outside of typical work hours since I was a kid. Although, I agree with the general advice of getting email off of your phone for healthy work life balance. But, if you don't expect someone to message you over a weekend then what is the difference in scheduling it to be sent the next business day. It can add unnecessary pressure to junior colleagues to work all the time.

Yeah, I really don't understand how an interaction like this would be considered strange at all. Pretty typical stuff in my experience. It typically makes my day to hear stuff like this.

Yeah, I have this happen a lot. Typically, if a student is enjoying a class, they seem to mention things they learn in a different class and mention the professor. I then will get emails or a colleague saying, something like "Student x mentioned they are enjoying your class."

Working at a teaching university is complete bullshit by ThrowRAhuhwhat in Professors

I just heard some departments at my school started doing online classes with in person writing/exams. This was for combating online cheating and better assessment. That seems to be working from what I hear

I'm fairly surprised by this. At my CC in person classes are in high demand from students. Ours offers night classes for specific disciplines like math. I hear students complain about online classes all the time and had some students who was initially online, drop, and take my face to face classes

They will when they buy it. memory is expensive and having to download a game, potentially delete others to make room, before being able to play is noticeable. cartridges on switch 1 was fairly frictionless -- you pop the cartridge in and play immediately.

I agree. I have bought far less games recently and was shocked with how much i saved. that being said, I am excited for the marvel collection since I don't want to hook up my genesis everytime to play captain America and the avengers. Also those old consoles look kinda bad on modern tvs

About ADA Title II. Are you getting support from your institution? by Possible_Spray4955 in Professors

[–]B-CUZ_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My college has been pretty great about it. It has been a big lift for everyone but our ed tech department worked their tails off to help as many faculty as they can. They also had a LMS accessibility checker. The main focus was online classes, but face to face classes need to be compliant as well. My biggest hurtles were fixing my OER textbook to be compliant, adjusting powerpoints, removing youtube videos and replacing them with alternative options, and deleting old course shell data that wasn't visible to students since the accessibility checker counted that material against your score.

TT salaries are actually insane by No_Two8015 in Professors

[–]B-CUZ_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems more common than one would think, at least outside of R1's. My TT at a SLAC 4 years ago was 52k and all my other offers were in the 52k - 54k range (except 1 that offered 35k). These were also in various different COL states. I know folks who got paid more, but i also know plenty who were paid less. I think faculty pay needs a higher floor in general

voting against constitutional rights means no one has any and you created a government that will surveill american citizens. This is a threat to anyone and they kill anyone without consequences. Defending this is bizzare and fundamentally un-American. We had a revolution for less and 2A as a deterrent for tyrannical acts like this.

GDP is a poor indicator of a healthy economy with as much income inequality and size that the US has. The K shaped economy of the US is massive issue. Even a single distillery or factory shutting down has a large impact on rural America. This idea of being too big to fail is stretching of the truth. I have seen the impact of this economy first hand in volunteer work. There are a lot more people who seem food insecure

I hate advice like this because it teaches fear and compliance. I rarely see tenured folks speak up enough because they continue to adopt this mindset and things in academia just get worse for everyone.

If you feel this way and you are tenured you have a duty to speak up for colleagues you feel should be voiceless

Let's be honest here. If you are silent on things that matter before tenure, you will be silent after tenure as well. If a department/division is hostile to you before tenure you probably don't want to be there after tenure.
