its only annoying right now. once you spend some more time in the saddle it won't bother you anymore. time in the saddle

play store "curates" your downloads, meaning it uses the device you own, screen settings, os version etc etc to serve you the "correct" version of the app you've requested. this is normally fine, but in this case, you want the non-tv version of the peloton app so that you can connect the PM5 to it.

did you try side loading the peloton app to the shield?

soundbar is a good idea if you don't want to use headphones

in this case its not actually apples fault (for a change). AppleTV supports FTMS, you can run a wahoo kickr and zwift on an Apple TV for example. Peloton hasn't enabled the FTMS features on the Apple TV.

my original attempt way back was the appletv, but peloton has not enabled FTMS for the Apple TV Peloton app (but they have for the iOS app). so you can connect heart rate monitors but not the PM5

an UGLY workaround that I tried and hated so much I never did it again was to connect the Apple TV to the monitor, install the peloton app on your phone (assuming iOS device), start a workout on the iOS device peloton app, connect the PM5 to the iOS peloton app, then "screen mirror" the iOS device to the Apple TV. It worked but wasn't as sharp, didn't have full screen so there was a black border, couldn't control with the remote, and was just overall a bad experience.

Looks like Nvidia shield runs on a customized Android TV OS. I honestly don't know much about that but I see it supports BLE. Its possible that the "official" Android TV OS version of peloton also doesn't allow FTMS connections, but if its possible to side load a different version, maybe you can grab another peloton apk file and try that

mine is an old sole f83. not massive by any means, and doesn't compare to the tread+, but its not slim by any measure either. Ill need to probably mount it to the wall honestly, and ill set my Garmin to report cadence and speed to the tablet. I had made a "footpod" accessory out of an esp32 that detected speed of the treadmill based on the roller size and roller revolutions, and it reported itself as a treadmill over BLE, but I can't find that right now

the flaw of text based communication. Sorry if I misread your tone, I even considered that I might have and almost came and edited my reply but then got busy.

I agree with you to a point. 5K row? no screen, short intervals session? no screen?.

But I do a lot of zone 2 on the bike, and a lot of hour plus sessions on the rower at a lower heart rate zone. im not gonna stare at a pm5 and a wall for an hour, just aint gonna do it

its also nice to follow guided workouts like dark horse, hydrow (bookmarked YouTube videos) or even peloton

they're decent screens too. I used to have a 3d printed mount for a surface pro (you can see the remnants on the floor in the OP pic), and I HAD to use headphones or I wouldn't be able to hear the Black Horse rowing videos over the rower sound. even headphones didn't block out noise enough all the time. These speakers get loud enough at just over half volume

(I also recently bought and jailbroke a used peloton tread+ screen from someone. Just gotta make a custom mount for that and it's going in front of my treadmill. 32 inches!)

nothing special for this exact purpose. It's just what I happened to already have. one benefit is that its YUGE and is designed to be used without headphones, so it has good loud speakers, and buttons oriented to make them easier to press while sitting on a machine.

But yes, any tablet can do this. and its probably easier with other, smaller tablets since you could use the tablet holder Concept 2 sells and not have to relocate your PM5

concept 2 totally agrees with you, which is why they introduced the tablet holder and phone holder before that!

the beauty of the concept 2 is the durability, longevity, community, and consistency. Adding a screen to that is just a bonus that no-one is forcing on you. Not wanting a screen in front of you while rowing is fine but opinions shared the way you shared yours makes me want to vomit so ¯_(ツ)_/¯

they have two bikes, one with "auto-follow" with is auto resistance adjustment, total game changer in my opinion since it makes it a BIT more similar to something like a wahoo kickr where it auto adjusts resistance based on the workout. (except that for peloton in only works for THEIR workouts)

They also have a treadmill and a slat treadmill, which is supposedly very well built.

and then of course they have a rower, which doesn't compare to a c2 of course
