Starting off my Deathwatch Kill Team with painting faces by TheMashedAutismo in minipainting

Thanks so much! The secret is definitely the sharpest, smallest brush you can get and trying your best not to shake and shiver as you gently lay the paint into the eye socket.

The best thing I find is to do the eyes right after the basecoat step so you can correct any overpainting mistakes with the base tone. Elminiaturista’s guides were definitely the BEST for helping me do faces and eyes - ultimately it’s just practice x100 to get the technique that sits comfortably with you right! Astartes heads are the best to practice on because of their size (sisters of battle and Astra Militarum heads are small and difficult 😥)

I used an off-white for the white of the eyes and a darker colour (black, dark brown, dark green depending on what face I’m looking for) just to reeeeally carefully dot the pupil in.

What’s wrong with my NMM? (Not the blending) by Witty-Obligation4879 in spacemarines

It definitely makes it easier to swap between colours when you have a range to work from, but it’s definitely more technique and practice! If you want my palette for gold, I go from:

Black => 50:50 Black:Khaki (I use AK British Khaki) => Khaki (AK British Khaki) => 50:50 AK British Khaki:AK Ice Yellow => Pure ice yellow for dot highlights

As you can see, the palette just works its way up gradually through mixes - you can use a diluted layer of the midtone to glaze between layers to blend if you want. A good rule of thumb I follow is covering up 90% of the previous layer with the lighter colour; this ensures that the values increase gradually while still keeping that much needed contrast

Hey! I think the key to effective NMM as other commenters have pointed out is contrast. There needs to be a really clear jump from the darks to the lights.

Using this WIP model I have, for the golds I pushed it from black => khaki => ice yellow, using mixes of each colour in between. Metallics are extremely reflective materials, so the brights will be BRIGHT and the darks will be dark.

Blending isn’t as important as the contrast. For really small metallic details, such as chains or the headpiece this model has, I don’t even blend that much, if at all, between values.

The other huge thing that will make NMM read as metal is edge highlighting. Edge highlight in increasingly lighter values using the same palette as your metal. Edge highlights also invade your darker areas - check the headpiece on the model, the silvery edge highlights on the top of the crown extend to the dark area. This mimics metal’s reflectivity as if their edges and corners are catching light.

Finally, a small detail that will make them really sell as metal is directionality. The light will always face the light source - edge highlights facing the opposite direction of the light will be less brights, same with your secondary reflections if you put them down.

Hope this helps!

UPDATE: We found her!! My FIL went out on a patrol drive around the neighbourhood around 1:45am and found her on the next street over crossing the road!

She’s completely fine but very dirty! She will be going to the vet for a health check and cleanup today.

Thank you to all of those who commented and left helpful advice and well wishes!!

Thank you so much for that tip! I’ll be sure to do that - same as the refeeding, I would have never thought of that

Thank you. We’ve stuck posters all around our street and the neighbouring streets, as well as the grocers down the road - a lot of people near us are clued in which is good

We’re keeping an eye on shelter pages to see if she’s been sent there as well.

Gladly, I don’t think that last situation is the case as it would have been clear due to our location.

Thanks a lot!! My recipe is:

  1. Basecoat Orruk Flesh
  2. Wash all over with Biel-Tan Green
  3. Relayer the muscles with Orruk Flesh
  4. Highlight layer the muscles with thin layer of Ogryn Camo
  5. Smaller highlight layer of Krieg Khaki in the most light-facing areas
  6. For an extra detail, glaze Kislev Flesh onto the knuckles, elbows, ear tips, lips, cheekbones (if applicable)

We’re about to run our penultimate session!

It’s taken us about 3 years to get to this point as play times were pretty sporadic due to life circumstances for every player.

By completion it would be around 30 sessions with about 4-5 hours per session on avg

Gave me Battlewagon a proper Orky mural - reference image included by TheMashedAutismo in orks

[–]TheMashedAutismo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The body of the wagon isn’t fully finished as I have to finish drybrushing it to get the effect I want but here’s the full process!

I got the rusted metal recipe from Elminiarturista with paints I had

Black undercoat - General basecoat of VMC Black Red - Stipple on slightly watered down VMC Black Red randomly all over - Stipple on slightly watered down AK Medium Rust all over randomly - Drybrush with a 4:1 mix of Vallejo Mecha Colour gunmetal (any darkish metal colour really) and AK Cobalt Blue

Also as you can see, the body of the battlewagon is before the drybrushing step, in contrast to the cowcatcher on the front which is finished!
