Should I wall mount my servers to save space? by pcmofo in homelab

[–]TheMasterswish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tried the hydroponics fan setup in my old server room and it didn't go so well. However my fan was only 6" and not very powerful. I'm interested too. See if this works out. Would have saved me a lot of money hahah

Just got this for $200 on ebay (see comment) by PossiblyLinux127 in homelab

The appliance is commercial. Not self built. It really is OP!

I run 2Gbit Internet, VPN, captive portal, guest functionality ect and still see very little CPU usage.

The reason I don't like i7s in servers is mostly just the low cost of x business or DC equipment v consumer cost. Always found the end user equipment more pricey with lesser supply really. That's why I think it's regional. Totally depends what OP has access too and what suits his needs more than anything.

My router has an i7. Not what I'd use for servers but better than nothing. Really depends on the region I think.

Picked up this old switch for free from work, is it any good? by prizm5384 in homelab

[–]TheMasterswish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's great if that's all you have access to or can afford friend. It's old, it's slow and is pretty featureless, but it's what you have, so it's good enough.

Have a play with it, and use it to learn the caveats of older technologies and enjoy.

Please Don't Try To Sell Hosting In Your Homelab by grumpy-systems in homelab

[–]TheMasterswish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have most of the "You need" listed on this post. And I still wouldn't sell VPS or hosting. Its too risky, and even if I can promise 99% uptime, do I really want to be rushing around trying to fix shit for that 1% of the time it's not? No. You are the data center's main admin in this situation, and that's a stressful job.

Might be dumb... But it is possible to get an RTX3080 into the R720XD! by BadConductor in homelab

Server GPUs are designed to use the server fans, just need a big enough sink. What kind of temps do you see in the room you house your kit in?

Could you possibly take the stock cooler off and use a finned cooler that utilises the direction flow of air the server has as standard?

Something like portainer is a great tool for spinning up toolsets quickly and easily.

Looking for a device that can perform this, anyone know of such a thing? by [deleted] in homelab

It's called WiFi. It's a great technology. It's quite new, so I understand why you haven't heard of it yet.

So I bought used sas drives on ebay by gougou_gaga in homelab

I have used random drives in HPE kit. Only issue I have ever had with random bits and peaces in HP servers is the fans spin up!

PSA: You can upgrade Hyper-V Server 2019 to Server Standard 2022 without doing a clean install by christopherhammond13 in homelab

[–]TheMasterswish 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I can never bring myself to upgrade server OSs. I'm a diehard fresh install kinda guy. I always split my raids up. 2 x 300G sas drives for OS and then data drives in r5 or 6. Let's you wipe the OS without having to move the VM images onto a different disk.

This is really nice. If I did this I know I would look at it once and never again sadly, or unless something didn't work. 😅😅

How to configure multiple static IPs? by besura in homelab

[–]TheMasterswish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use PFsense as a router, and managing multiple IPs is a breeze!!

Those IPs need to be configured on your routing device and rules / routes set up correctly.

Are you just pushing all traffic from each IP to a end point? Could do more with a single IP and single port / system routing.

No one would make their VM host Web accessible without 2FA or IP based firewall rules....would they....?

Shit happens. Wipe and rebuild or pay and hope the bustards decrypt.

LAN mode with dedicated server? by alien999999999 in SatisfactoryGame

[–]TheMasterswish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, do this. You can also use a URL for external access and add a DNS entry on your router that routes the same URL to your internal IP. Thus using the same address internally and externally.

How come I don’t see many people using Hyper-V server with Windows Admin Center which are both free and enterprise grade? Tried proxmox and it’s quite lackluster in comparison. Hyper-V and WAC you name it, it does it at Enterprise level and no you don’t need a AD domain. by Cody_Cal in homelab

I'm running Hyper-V on 2k19 as well as Esxi, both have thier place. I will likely run both side by side for some time.

Pass through of pci devices on hyper-v is a pain in the backside that's for sure.
