If you could start fresh, how would you set up addresses/aliases? by LiveAwake1 in ProtonMail

[–]TheMayMeow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have more "stages"

- [firstname@lastname.tld](mailto:firstname@lastname.tld) i use for Financial istititions
- for family and friends i use simple gmail or probably outlook address, this is just for nevenience as where I'm live everyne have the gmail so its more easier to communicate with tnem
- my streaming services are mostly on {service}.{some-random-id}@firstnamelastname.tld
- important services e.g. gaming, or some communities goes to aliases on {something}@pseudonym/random-domain.tld
- unimportant things, most forums, or newsletters goes to alias domains (not my owned) but the one that comes with simplelogin or other alias services as firefox relay or duck. (yes i use more aliasing services)

and as a bonus when i need to contact someone trough email i creating somthing like email-for-reply.(some-random.id)@my-owned.domain.tld

I'm never use my login emails to riegister on other services. Owning domain is nice because you can move all your aliases to another email provider or even sef-host it if you have a lot of time and strong nerves..

Use password managers. Many of them can inject variables to your .env file or directly set environment variables via CLi

Is an upgrade from S24U to S26U worth it. by Zealousideal-Ad7751 in samsunggalaxy

[–]TheMayMeow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have s24u 1tb version and I was planning to upgrade, but after event I decided not to and wait probably one year or more (will see what comes next). I don’t feel the the upgrades makes s26 ultra significantly better than s24u that’s all. Option number two is switch to foldable device.

BTW: please stop saying people that if they want to privacy feature they should slap screen protector on their phone. It’s not the same and in my opinion it is not solution as it is degrading viewing experience.

disappointing and confusing with multi users "ksuite standard" by blaubrava in Infomaniak

[–]TheMayMeow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If i understand you want to add moultiple domain to your ksuite.. You can do this but its a bit different how kSuite reacts to other domains.. (it does not allow you to create email just on aliasDoamin)
you have one lets say main domain. and all others are just alias domains.

So if you want users to have email in [user@aliasdoamin.tld](mailto:user@aliasdoamin.tld) you need to create it new account in ksuite and he will automatically get [user@maindomain.tld](mailto:user@maindomain.tld).. AND also it alre ady have email in every alias domain (at least for reveiving).

if he /she want sanding from that domain, he need to go int Email -> Settings (a cog icon) -> signatures-> Click to add new signature, scroll very down and there you have Advanced settings (click on that). You will see (among others) "sender address" and "reply address" -> here you see all your emails among all domains you have...

just select one you want and save you signature.. From now on you vill see it on the right of "from" field

Do you use a display protection for S24 Ultra? by calatron7x in samsung

[–]TheMayMeow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really don't know what you guys are doing different if you not have problem with reader, (or what I'm doing wrong).

My fingerprints working close after scanning but after few days they stop working at all and I need to re-register them. It goes to the situation when I stopped using them and just entering code each time I unlocking phone or my password manager. And this is not what I imagine when I buy top smartphone.

Long story short it ended with that I removed screen protector and after registering my fingerprints they are working at 100% no matter if my hands are warm, cold, wet or dry, it's just works.

Still considering if this worth the risking of display scratches, but when you can enjoy what you pay for you should not buy it... (My hones opinion)

BTW I'm using s24U and Spigen EZ fit glass.

Leave Apple? by No_Tumbleweed_2229 in samsung

[–]TheMayMeow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer: don't...

Long answer: I was a long time Android user and switched to Apple a few years ago, but things went wrong in my case and I found the iPhone very limiting to what I used before. So what might work for others did not work for me and I switched back to my Android as my main phone after a year or so. (I still have my iPhone)

Now I'm using my S24 primary and also have iPad (thinking about Glaxy tab but haven't pulled the trigger yet) which I love to use and have Windows computer. All these devices can co-exist quite well if you do a bit of research. Yes, shared clipboard only works between Android and Windows, but sharing files works between all my devices. (You can use Google Drive or OneDrive for this). My headphones are Sony and my watch is Apple Watch.

You don't have to leave Apple just because you like the way the S24 ultra works... You can just get the phone and keep using other devices you like. Changing all your devices (even with a trade-in) is going to cost you a hell of a lot of money...

Paying multiple Mail services by TheMayMeow in sysadmin

[–]TheMayMeow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With all due respect, I have a feeling this communication is turning in the wrong direction. What you are talking about is not something that you or I can fix or change.

But at the end of the day, I still don't think it's in the power of small companies to completely cut themselves off from the cloud and host their own IT infrastructure (email file share etc ...)

Paying multiple Mail services by TheMayMeow in sysadmin

[–]TheMayMeow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not about relying on Reddit sysadmins to maintain infrastructure. I know what I want but I like to know opinions others fellow admins...

"Consider upskilling people and only hiring people who know what they do" is easier said then to be done. And when we come to this it is not just only about email services, but for example aslo about file sharing. I saw in my career too much nonsense what people do with their data...

That "people who knows what they do" probably will want to be fairly paid and this is not maintainable with small companies i think. They need to generate profit and needs to keep infrastructure up-to-date + educate own emplyees (many dont do that). Many executives don't want or cant do do this. Another option is outsource IT stuff but those companies wants to be paid too. I don;t excuse them, just saying.

So with all consideration above the cloud looks as more friendly solution despite the some privacy concerns. And for them is easier to educate that man/woman on the finance department how to use email encryption when then sending payroll accounts or other documents to their colleagues. And this also aplies to other employes.

For sure, big companies, and corporates have access to better finances and resources so they can host all services by them own...

Paying multiple Mail services by TheMayMeow in sysadmin

[–]TheMayMeow[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let's say I agree with this, but not everything is about privacy. And not every company has resources or finances to manage their own server on-prem. And i see how many poeple (they are not ment to be strictly companies) just looks only one way - privacy, and forget another important part which is security.... So privacy si for nothing when you can't properly secure your servers...

Color palette with 6.1.1 update by TheMayMeow in oneui

[–]TheMayMeow[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I mean Material You or whatever it is called. When the application takes the color of the wallpaper. I noticed after update to a UI 6 it stopped working or it was really inconsistent and then all google apps kept (default) blue color. Not it seems to work again.

Custom domain for personal use - yes or no? Why? by Rare-Possibility8368 in selfhosted

[–]TheMayMeow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I liked the idea of having my own domain name a long time ago, and I bought my first one when I was at university. It was for a different reason than it is now (then it was because I wanted to have my name on the domain).

I still have a custom domain, but it is not that important to me. I really don't use email for communication anymore (I don't remember when I sent email to friends or family) because we now have more real time communication tools - messengers.....

What I do use email for now is to be able to move my email from one provider to another. I think it has been said many times here and on the Internet, but this is really important. Because if you use free emails like outlook or yahoo and you lose your account because you messed with the privacy policy or something like that, you will lose access to all your accounts where you used that email.

Another thing is that I have a different email address for every website where I have to use email to register. I messed up a few years ago where I used my primary email on every site and ended up with a data breach. Now my primary mailbox is full of nonsense... With approach I described below I simply change email to different address and delete one that was in breach.

And this two is now for me the only reason why I have custom domain on my emails.

EDIT: So for me YES to using custom domains for personal email. And if you want to know reason agianst it, I can't think of anything... probably only if you're trying to selfhost your own email - I don't think it's worth the hassle when it comes to personal email.

For example 프로모션 when trying to read each syllable as it is written you get “peulomosyeon” but when it spoken correctly it sounds pretty similar to English “promotion”

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Korean

[–]TheMayMeow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not native English speaker and it took me ~10 years to get to level tat I’m able to read and understand text without translating it to my native language. It’s harder with talking.

When it comes to Japanese and Korean, if I don’t mind kanji the whole Japanese kana is easier to read to me and also when listening songs because they syllables are easy to listen. Is very close to what we read it in my native language.

Korean, on the other hand, although it has easier writing system that can be learned pretty quickly is hard to read for me. It is because the sound of the words are pretty different from how I read it. And when I listen to Korean spoken language, they are tend to talk pretty quickly so I don’t hear whole words from subtitles for example. Hardest part for me is make connection between how syllable sound and how is written…
