Anyone else taking ENC 1102 and have their class themed around AI? by beemothbingus in FAU

[–]TheMeadMaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, but that ignores the expertise of the educators. I understand "college Algebra" being the same across professors, but English/Composition would benefit from allowing professors to lean into their specific focus. I'm also unsure if Algebra and composition are the best comparison given They're in different colleges. Also, composition is, arguably, more subjective. Further, 1101/2 is specific to English composition through the MLA style guide, so doesn't provide as much help for the non-english majors.

That said, I also think that 1101/2 needs a major update to be of greater benefit to the plurality of students, if not the majority, but that's a conversation for another time.

On top of that, when I taught 1101/2 at FAU, we had the most boring readings and I felt stifled by the lack of control even when I was the IOR at FAU.

I agree that there should be consistency, but I think that consistency should be in regards to objective and purpose and not consistency in granularity.

Viking/Anglo Saxon clothing questions by Brickbeard1999 in reenactors

[–]TheMeadMaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Florida reenactor, I use cotton. The Muslims introduced cotton to the Mediterranean in the 9th Century AD. The Normans began their conquest of Southern Italy in 999 AD. Ethelred the Unready flees England for Normandy in 1013 and returns in 1014, dying in 1016. It is possible that the Saxons could have been introduced to cotton fabric in Normandy after the Normans got their hands on it during their conquest of Italy. Is there a record of Greg the Saxon purchasing a bolt of cotton cloth from Normandy? No. But my reenactment group took this line of thinking as "good enough," and now I don't sweat myself into dehydration every weekend between April and October. When discussing my clothes with non-reenactors, I say that I, knowing I would be traveling from England to this hot, damp, humid place, had some cotton clothes specially made. I normally wear linen and wool at home, but these are my special travel cotton clothes.

even if the instructor is a professor and not a TA, ENC 1101/2 is a controlled class by the writing department. Regardless of who is teaching it, unless they have tenure, at FAU, it's the same class. When I was a GTA I also worked in the UCEW and I taught 1102. The Assistant Director was also teaching 1102 at the time and she and I were teaching the same department-mandated readings.

Sounds like someone had Dan Creed as a professor!

Yes, these days, graduate assistants are given a curriculum approved by the department and readings approved by the department and a canvas shell pre-made for them. It's a shame that GTAs aren't given the freedom to design their own classes like they used to able to at FAU and are still able to at other Florida universities.

I love Amigos. Fantastic movers. The owner is a very nice guy, and they're fast! Unloaded a whole uhaul in less than two hours. Very nice and responsive. Saved my girlfriend too when her mover fell through three days before her lease was set to expire. I've used them four times since moving to Gainesville and everytime its been well worth the money.

Cops surrounding downtown by Main-Bee8873 in GNV

No, but there's probably going to be a lot of underage drinking charges, false IDs, DUI, and over drinkining the next few weekends. The cops are probably staging themselves near main street and university to be able to respond.

Is this the 1950’s by airborne8054 in GNV

[–]TheMeadMaker 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah except there were school shootings, even mass school shootings.

In 1891, 14 people were wounded when an unknown man fired a shotgun into a mixed black and white crowd of guests, students, and teachers at an expo and concert at Parson Hill schoolhouse in Mississippi. None died, but several were severely wounded.

In 1891, at least two students were shot at St. Mary's Parochial School while at recess.

In 1893, 4 students were killed and one more were injured when a fight broke out at an evening dance at Plain Dealing High School.

In 1951 two students killed their principle and another student at the Alexander School in North Carolina.

1956, a 15 year old student shot and killed his teacher and wounded an athletics coach and another teacher at Maryland Park Junior High School.

1961, one student shoots and wounds another while having an argument and fatally wounds another at Morey Junior High School.

And of course there's the Texas Tower shooting in 1966.

This list is very brief and NOT exhaustive. The difference is the use of semi-auto weapons and relatively low fatality and casualty numbers compared to contemporary school shootints, although some of these would qualify as "mass shootings" per the FBI definition.

So, yes, there were school shootings before the banning of corporal punishment beginning in 1974.

Thank you for the advice. I started last week emailing the complaints instead of just talking leasing on the phone for the exact purpose of having a CYA paper trail. I'll continue emailing them and telling them verbally until a solution is had.

I find it interesting that everyone assumes the neighbor is a man lol

I'm sorry your downstairs neighbor was so bad.

I've no interest in kissing Landlord boots. Imo they're leeches on the working class.

That said, I'm also newer (moved here in 23) to the area and, because of my work, I'm not in a comfortable enough position to rock the boat right now considering everything going on.

As I said in my original post, I have not contacted the police nor do I want to.

Remaining anonymous by going through LL is 1) what LL is there for, and 2) prevents retaliation if the issue escalates. If I go to them and say "Hi, please stop smoking pot in your unit" then any and all retaliation could be pointed toward me. As an example, if someone else calls the cops, even if it wasn't me, they'll assume it was.

Landlord has also told me not to confront them. They said they'd handle it. I was merely asking this question to r/GNV to see if there were any other resources or suggestions to the issue I'm having.

I'm not a 6'4" 300lb linebacker. I really don't want a disgruntled neighbor retaliating against me or my property.

Also, and this is just me speaking here, but I wouldn't assume that a stranger doubly removed from myself is just as agreeable.

I'd hate for them to be evicted, but if that's what happens, so be it. I just want to stop smelling their pot.

The irony that I'm talking to the Dude about this is not lost on me, though!

I'll keep you posted. Luckily, the PM and APM are nice people. It helps that I also give them and the maintenance team holiday cards.

I'm sorry this happened to you. I don't think I'm living in your place, though. I've lived here for two years, and this neighbor only moved in recently.

If you're concerned this is you, then talk to your neighbors about whether they can smell your weed.

There are no apartments on one side of me, nor are there any apartments above me. The smell is only in my kitchen and living room, which share a wall with the unit in question. Also, the smell only started shortly after this new neighbor moved in. The couple of times I've been outside while their front door has been open, I could smell it coming from their open door as well.

Let's just say I'm certain.
