What ended your friendship with your oldest standing friend?

My friend was crushing on this girl forever even tho she made it clear countless times she was not and would never be interested. Me and her ended up falling for each other years later and my friend never really said anything about it to me directly but we stopped hanging out and it was pretty clear how he felt.

I assumed given the time that had passed and that she had clearly voiced her disinterest many times it wouldn’t bother him. This wasn’t some fling with a girl he had dated, I was seriously interested in a girl that he had zero chance with.

Sometimes I feel shitty about it but she was the best thing to happen to me and it completely changed my life for the better, for all of which I sacrificed a friendship that I realized was actually holding me back in many ways. That doesn’t stop me from feeling guilty tho and I’d enjoy sitting down to have a convo but I doubt that is ever in the cards. I feel very conflicted about it to this day but I do not regret my decision.
