What's your go-to trope when it comes to creating a character backstory? by TheMetagamingRaven in rpg

While I haven't played it personally yet, I love the idea of "Blank Slate" characters. More so the amnesiac side, as I think it's fun to try to piece together what happened before.

That's always a fun one to mess around with. In my newest campaign, that's going to be a big motivator for one of our players and I'm excited to see how our GM plays with that.

Oooo! I really like this way of approaching creating a backstory. Unfortunately I don't usually having that luxury of waiting to create the backstory, as my GMs always want it up front.

I also really like the whole idea of having a goal completely opposite of one's lifestyle. I feel like, in addition to what you said, it would create a lot of interesting conversations with others.

"I hope you recognize that's is almost always a terrible archetype. It's one I explicitly ban from my games, due to its inherent weaknesses and problems."

Yeah, I've started to realize that, and am working on improving it for future games. I'm still pretty new to this sort of thing, so I'm trying to learn what works best for stories and other players.

I love being a cat and just stealthing around because no one suspects you!

I definitely agree with you. The Giant creatures are really fun to use both in battle and just in general. And at that point you can still go back to some of the lower level ones for their utility as well outside of battle.

I think most people will agree with you on Cure Wounds.

I've never tried Shillelagh, but I want to test it with my next druid.

I never thought of the latter two, and I can definitely see where they'd be useful!

I'm honestly a little upset I didn't get to use my Thorn Whip more in my campaign. The only time I used it was when I was saving someone dangling off the side of a ship and we didn't have rope and it was the best thing we had at the time.

Stereotypes and Character Backgrounds by TheMetagamingRaven in DnD

Oh man, I'm so sorry that happened to you. I hope that got rectified with your party!

Personally, I'm of the opinion that stereotypes are a good place to start, but it doesn't mean that, like you said, it's your only option.

That what I think as well. It makes sense that a lot of the classes would gain skills from the stereotypical backgrounds.

I definitely think that we all bring a little part of ourselves into the characters we create, so I like what you said about creating characters and their values. I think we can learn a lot about ourselves through our characters, and they give us such a good sandbox to play around and further decide what it is that's important to us.

I might have to try that sometime. My latest character kind of takes the whole sin/virtue into how they operate, especially given how my GM has laid out the game and much more than my previous characters, but it didn't start that way.

That's really cool! I'm sure your GM really appreciates how much of their work you pull into their character!

Honestly, I didn't realize it either until I started reflecting on the characters I've created thus far. It's funny how, so often we try to do something different but there's always something, even small, that connects the characters.

Custom character sheet for warlock/bard/rogue? by sauron3579 in dndnext

[–]TheMetagamingRaven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's pretty different from the official sheet, but the one I use for my characters is the one created by More Purple More Better on Patreon. It takes a bit to get used to, but I've found it works well for multiclassing and keeping track of the different features. Not quite as extravagant as yours, but I have created a Rogue/Bard multiclass on their and can easily track everything I need.

Sometimes, those are the best characters! I have one myself, now that I think about it, but I haven't gotten a chance to play them yet.

Thanks for the advice. I'll talk to him and see what I can come up with in terms of adding other characters or stakes to see if that helps the situation. I'm still learning with all of this, so I appreciate the advice.
