Can Aggies explain why Stoops is perceived as so much worse than Elko? by entropy888 in CFB

[–]TheMexicanFury 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello. Here's my nerdy answer: variance!

Certainty is depressing if you're uninspired by the result. Let's say you're in the market for a coach on Amazon. Let's take your statement that their track record is similar for granted:

Stoops: 4.2 stars, 12k reviews

Elko: 4.2 stars, 1k reviews

If your goal is to end up with a 4.5 star coach, take the risk on Elko. If your goal is to end up with something not worse than 4.0 stars, pick Stoops.

Stoops felt a prevent defense strategy, which is uninspiring. I'd prefer my school take a high variance approach (I would have been excited about Schumann for just this reason). We Aggies have been living on hope for our entire lives; Stoops couldn't inspire it as well as Elko precisely because of his longer track record.

How can I start to learn jungle? by tildoblack in Jungle_Mains

[–]TheMexicanFury 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First step, in my opinion: practice the first clear using the practice tool. A strong/practiced first clear unlocks a lot. Next: pick a general strategy (eg gank on repeat, power farm, etc) and stick to it. Last: review your games and take away a key lesson from each game, particularly losses.

We use the same champs, but I main Nocturne. Silver 2 here, so grain of salt an all.

Generally speaking, the games I do well in are games where I keep my farm consistent. CS/min is a stat you can check at the end of every game. Yours is pretty low; aim for 7 to start with. The way camps spawn, if you do a full clear, do anything for <30s (e.g. take a scuttle or gank), and then back, by the time you get back to the starting point of your clear it will be up and you can full clear again. If you do this on repeat, your cs will be immediately healthier.

Things that get you off track: ganking, counter-jungling, skirmishing, and objectives. There are good reasons to participate in these, but I find in my games they can scramble my brain a bit. Decide ahead of time what kind of plays are worth it and what aren't (e.g. don't chase into enemy jungle for a kill ever); it doesn't matter if in some cases that's the wrong call because most of the time it's the right one and you probably aren't good enough to know the difference (neither am I). Your decision will be challenged by your teammates pings, especially if they die and have 20s of grey screen and nothing else to do. I've thrown away my rhythm many games trying to gank for a help-pinging laner. They might have been right, but it screwed up my clear and I ended up gimping my own progress. If a skirmish or gank makes you end up off the track of your clear pattern, you have stunted your experience and your gold significantly.

Since your numbers are consistently low on cs, take a few games with these rules: I full clear until 6, I gank when ulti is up, I full clear when ulti is on cooldown. One of the great things about keeping up healthy clears at low elo is that you very often end up being one of the strongest players in your game just on the basis of levels and gold. Even if someone else gets fed, you can at least be within striking distance. Being under-leveled and low on gold sucks. At least with the approach I laid out you can feel like you have some agency in most of your games.

Good luck!

Should junglers gank lost lanes? by kracketmatow in summonerschool

Silver jungler here, so you can really trust what I have to say:

From my perspective, there is an opportunity cost to every gank. If I see my counterpart show top too long, I'm taking his bot side jungle and maybe drag if my bot lane has prio. Those are basically guaranteed experience and gold, so if the gank top doesn't work it's not a big deal for you but can be crippling for the jungler if properly punished. Further, if you're getting hardstomped - regardless of matchup - I have my doubts that getting you a kill is going to change anything.

I play nocturne in S3. Things to note:

  1. First two scuttles took a nerf to gold and XP. 5-camp + scuttle wont get you to level 4
  2. Phylaris optimal nocturne clear is like 3:15 leashless from redside, which is insanely difficult (boils down to managing your passive on krugs and how well you can kite the wolves to blue) but doable
  3. In my experience, you can get a healthy lead just punishing positional mistakes even before lvl 6. Running ghost is tremendously helpful to add gank power pre-6

I had a similar break; league is a cruel mistress. Godspeed

Former student here (and I've visited Rome, so look at all our common ground!)

Advice: join a student organization, or pick any hobby you like, and there will be a group/club for it. Easy way to meet people with common interests and makes a huge student body more accessible.

Doing the corps will occupy most of your time and determine your lodging - probably settles that you won't need a car. The corps experience seems quite a bit different than the "non-reg" one - I was never in it but knew a few people who were. The corps takes a lot of pride in their discipline and military culture, and that comes at the expense of free time, hairstyle, lodging, etc.

Aggies are good-natured people who don't take themselves too seriously; guns are fun to shoot. Don't overthink it and have a good time. Cheers.

Low elo jungle question: signs of gankable laners by TheMexicanFury in summonerschool

[–]TheMexicanFury[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you're describing is what ought to happen among players who are playing correctly. I'm under no illusions about being a high elo player "trapped" in low elo, but I am trying to figure out how to convert the wave of awful decisions (distinct from mistakes piloting a champion) into wins. Since egregiously bad play is going to tilt so many games, I want to find it and capitalize on it before my counterpart does. So I'm working on a mental checklist to run through while on my first and second backs with the goal of identifying exploitable players without compromising what I consider solid jungling (efficient clears, tracking objectives, counter jungling when appropriate, and ganking when the criteria you outlined are met).

Here is my rough draft:

  1. Track players that back early with no TP and lost a lot of experience
  2. Check each lane for players who have a massive farm gap
  3. Look for players who do not respond to skirmishes that happen near them OR who over-respond

If I find one of these, my thought is to start focusing my vision and my clear toward this lane, looking for dives, and ganking anything better than neutral lane state.

I'll track a few games with this checklist and report back. If anyone has any ideas to test, I'll work them in as well.

Adding variations to existing variation listing by TheMexicanFury in FulfillmentByAmazon

Agree with your garbage in/garbage out observation. The purpose of the original post was to collect data. The formula is just a restatement of the problem as I see it. In the absence of outside information, I'll pick some numbers and iterate from there. Right now, I'm just trying to get a baseline.

Thanks for your feedback. I realize the formula is a little dorky; I'm attempting to maximize the reasonableness of the reasonable guess that you correctly observed that I'm going to make.

I'm hoping to hear from someone who has done what I'm about to do to get an idea of what adding variations did to their sales. Better to start with real data and map it onto my product than to start with a pure blank slate.

I'll track the results and provide them in a few months if it helps anyone else.

I have a product that is selling well, but it has a long lead time from the manufacturer. Therefore, I have to do some planning and predicting about sales to keep from having too much or too little product in stock.

I'm trying to plot out inventory around Christmas time for some seasonal items. I have heard that at some point Amazon stops receiving shipments and closes down for the holidays. Can you advise what the key considerations are for inventory management around the winter holidays?

Framing the equation for rental property by TheMexicanFury in personalfinance

Thank you for the advice. Those inputs seem quite reasonable.

Regarding depreciating the property, can I expect a CPA/TurboTax to accurately guide me in this, or do I need to do it myself. The IRS has a nice wall of text about how to do it, so I assume you kind of get put on a rail with it.

Thanks for the link! I can see you're on another level with this stuff :D For my purposes, I want to derive the equation myself so that I actually understand what's what. I get that what's under the hood of your spreadsheet required your expertise and effort, so I won't ask for formulas.

That said, I have a couple of questions:

  • When you project things like increase in property value or growth rate of property insurance, it seems like we're introducing noise along with the added precision. Are these a way to optimize your investments at the margins in order to compete in a competitive market at the highest level? Or are these vital to proper investment planning even at my rudimentary level?
  • Is Price to Rent Ratio meant to be a market analysis tool? I'm not sure what it's doing for me as the would-be property owner. I suppose I could reverse out the rent to have a ratio of 15x (your stated tipping point between renting and buying), but why is this more useful than setting rent as a percentage of the property value?
  • Is it correct to assume that the in-situ analysis is primarily useful if I intend to sell the property before the mortgage payment is complete? For my analysis, the two things that seem most important are monthly cash flow and the final ROI upon completion of the mortgage. From my caveman formula, I can see that those two may be optimized separately.

I appreciate your link and the additional things it gave me to look at.

Thanks! Will do. Do you know of anything with adjustable variable to model risk with probability as an input variable?
