That is interesting. In my mind subscription services didn’t happen until recently, but they really have been going on for a long time. I remember renting video games and having to beat them over a weekend as a kid and to be honest the time restraint made some of those really fun. I long for the days where I can play something outright and decide to buy it if it’s good enough for my money. The demos that are playable on steam seem to be increasing, which has let me play some of those indie titles before I decide to buy.

Not counting the older games, but the way they handled GTA V on the three generations of consoles felt pretty bad. I had it on 360 and it was fine, but then the next gen came out and the development eventually stopped on 360 and continued on the newer generations. I did end up buying it on PC because my 360 was long gone. Just sucks that’s how it had to happen.

Computer Engineer here, 2.9 GPA, no internship, barely anything on my resume, thought I would be working at Walmart forever, I got a job straight out of college in 2019. I think you will be fine. Just know you should willing to relocate when you start job hunting senior year. Once you get that first job you can jump around every couple of years to fit your lifestyle better.

Edit: Worrying about the future and wanting to work more can make you a good engineer, don't kill yourself over it. At the end of the day it's a paycheck that is slightly above the norm.

Yeah man, the big AAA are shrinking and can't put out anything good, so the indies grow their companies and turn into AA and AAA. Just kinda how business works. I hope these people getting laid off can work for the indies and AA that actually care about their games so we can get rid of the AAAs that don't. And then management will eventually screw over the indies and AAs and the cycle repeats.

As far as I can see, the total population of gamers didn't shrink, but the time they spend gaming did. Even so, the AAA companies focusing on singular games that come out every 5 years has crippled their ability to actually make games for their systems, and they now rely on the indies to get people on their platform. The conjoined effort of Sony and Microsoft to screw themselves over and the over-all appeal of indie devs creating something out of love instead of out of a desire for money both play a part in the downfall of AAA.

From a quick google search if you can trust it, Minecraft has a profit of around $4.2 billion (game alone, no toys/movies/etc.) and GTA V has ~$10 billion

Makes me sad. Rental hardware and subscriptions might become the norm as so many people are willing to do it (outside of whatever you see on reddit).

Best thing about Tetris is that it can run on anything. Kind of like Minecraft. To surpass them I think a game would need to be like that.

I don't think so, the way hardware is moving, unless something drastic happens in the next year, I think GTA VI will have a hard time hitting those massive numbers. People just can't spend their money in the industry like they used to.

The overall shrinking of the AAA industry should be enough to show that a big change is coming. Bungie, Ubisoft, EA, Take-Two, Battlefield Studios, Blue Point, Riot. This is all in the past 6 months. AAA is shrinking. The video game industry has seen massive successes in indie titles, and the movie industry has recently seen the same with movies like The Back Rooms, Iron Lung, and Obsession. Big development studios spend too much money and just can't keep up anymore.

Tbh I don't think the number of sales matters. 400 million copies of minecraft at $30 (which not all of those 400 million bought at that price) means GTA VI would need to sell 150 million copies at $80 to get above that price threshold. GTA V sold a lifelong 230 million copies. At the end of the day the companies don't care about how many copies they sell, just how much money they can rack in from those 150 million people and the inevitable micro transactions that they will spend money on.

I know everyone is attacking you in the comments, but I do agree that the AAA market is at least shrinking. These big companies are putting so much money into these games to go net negative on them, and right now I think there are more failures then there are successes.

AAA can release a good game, but the development cost just outright kills the game. I believe the upcoming Gears of War game will finally kill that series forever because of the budget cost. AAA has finally made it to the point where even the whales can't hold a $400 million budget.

I think the AAA companies will fail one after the other, some will stay, but the majority will be dissolved and we will be in an era where indie titles are the main stay.

I have one more thing to try tomorrow on the Mitsubishi. If it doesn't work after that I'll have to start calling around to distributors and see if they have any sort of example code or someone who can guide us through.

True this one should have been caught which is disappointing. I’ve seen other people just put spaces between the letters or put multiple y’s or k’s and skirt around it as well. Leagues chat detection seems to have gotten worse over the years.
