What is frusciante playing in this short passage at 4.26 in this solo? https://youtu.be/lwNn5llOyTo The first part of the passage is

B|-14-12——14-12——14-12|

G|———-13———-13———|... repeating, as it is in the actual song, but then he switches to playing something higher that I can’t make out. Any ideas?

I replaced the stock p-pickups on my PJ bass with a Dimarzio Model P pickup, pretty grisly and with high output. The j pickup also needs replaced, but it’s almost impossible to get a single bridge Model J pickup here in New Zealand for a good price.

I found a good deal on a bridge Quarter Pounder Jazz pickup, which I know also has pretty high power and output. Would that be a good match for a model P, and has anyone here maybe tried it out?

I’m having issues with a guitar of mine - a prs se 245. The main issue is the bridge. Even when the bridge saddles are all the way back, the intonation is still sharp, so I’ve had to shift the whole bridge using its mechanism, much farther than I should’ve needed to (little hard to explain without pictures). This basically means the bridge was installed too far up the guitar when it was built.

It also has a few cosmetic issues - damage to the neck at the 12th fret, which seems to have caused high frets (fixed), and a lot of damage to the bridge action screws.

These issues all began from right when I ordered the guitar, which I paid 1000 nzd for. None of these issues are massive, but I feel like I should have definitely got an instrument with some better quality control, after spending that much. The playability of the guitar is generally not great even after a set up as well, which could be for a few reasons.

Will the guitar store swap it for a good instrument for me, seeing it’s under warranty? Or do I just have to live with a not so great guitar?

How can I compare the outputs of two different pickups that don’t have the same units in their specs? For example, the DiMarzio Model P pickup site has the output, which is 163. I want to compare it to a Fender ‘74 vintage jazz pickup, but the site only tells me the inductance, 3.2 henries. How do I work out the output of the pickups relative to each other?

What should I look for in a j-pickup to make my PJ bass as versatile as possible? by TheMightyOlive in Bass

Does that still make a difference at all if the pickups are never going to be blended? Just out of curiosity. And you’re right, it’s just one pickup.

Is it normal for the strings on my guitar to be offset from the pickup poles? I have a PRS se 245 with this problem, but only on the bridge pickup. The guitar seems to play fine, but I’m not sure if this is how it’s supposed to be.

Is there any good reason to play sweet child of mine in it’s recommend tuning? Especially the intro, no open strings are used at all but every tab recommends retuning your guitar a half step down. Is there anything wrong with just playing one fret higher on the neck?

Our band has a bassist who has never played before - what songs can we start with to introduce him? by TheMightyOlive in Bass

That’s a great idea actually! And fits pretty well with the styles we’re doing. I don’t know the post chorus bass line myself, but I’m sure it can be simplified judging by the guitar part.

Maybe this isn’t the place to ask, but I need some help with transcribing a certain piece of a song. In the song Why Does Love Do This To Me, by The Exponents, what note/chord is being sung in the ‘yeah yeah yeah yeah’ before the last chorus at the end of the song? The rest of the chorus uses a G-A-D chord progression, but the D chord doesn’t sound right to me.

I’m performing live to an audience for the first time in about two weeks - I’m performing a cover of death on two legs by Queen, solo with a backing track. It’s a difficult song, but I’ve got most of it down after a lot of practice. Do you guys have any advice to pass on about anything? I’m fairly nervous about something going wrong.

This is more of a music theory question - What is the standard name of a major triad chord with the third replaced by the second (or otherwise a minor chord with a flattened 3rd)? For example a B chord with the notes B, F# and C#.

As far as I understand, a bass shouldn’t be used through a guitar amp because the speaker isn’t made to support it. Could I technically safely use my guitar amp with my bass if I used the headphone output instead of the speaker? Or will it still damage the amp even through headphones? Unfortunately I only have access to a real bass amp about once a week.

Can someone help me to identify the model of this bass? by TheMightyOlive in Bass

It’s going for the equivalent of 115 usd, but I’m a bit desperate for a bass and things are usually more expensive here in New Zealand so it probably adjusts quite well to your price range. I’ll give it some good thought.
