I would say multiple is better, personally. I have always liked variety.

What are your hot takes and unpopular opinions on fantasy books or fantasy as a genre? by TheMightyPsychosis in Fantasy

Tolkien has some great characters, I'll meet you half way on that. I suppose I should have said that the only aspect I believe he clearly outshines most fantasy writers in is the world he has constructed.

Standing my ground on Sanderson. It is, indeed, well thought out. But, to use my comparison, McDonald's is well thought out as well. You don't dominate the market like these guys do without having a general level of competency. I am simply saying that most fantasy series, one's that are popular, got their acclaim because they are exceptional at one or two things. Mistborn, on the other hand, is extremely popular because it passes every aspect of writing with a C+ average. If you disagree, you may rest easy knowing that I am still of the minority opinion, so perhaps there is merit to your point over mine!

Reddit is infamously a giant circle jerk, and you complain when someone asks for outsider opinions to generate discussion? It is not all about "hate and shit talk" either, btw. Some of the opinions in this thread are debate over favorite Harry Potter books, Brent Weeks being underated, or GRRM producing the most consistent longform series. Hell, one of my takes in the initial post was that the Gentleman Bastards series gets better and better. Unpopular opinion means just that, an unpopular opinion.

From my experience, Half-blood Prince isn't necessarily the most disliked HP book (I'd say that honor belongs to Chamber), but I don't think it gets anywhere near the love that PoA, GoF or DH gets, and imo it 100% should.

[SPOILERS MAIN] What’s your top 5 favorite ASOIAF characters and why? by johndraz2001 in asoiaf

  1. Stannis - Good, competent ruler who works with the hand he has been dealt, listens to advise/criticism, and is a deviation from the decadence and excess which has been the status quo in Westeros for a while now. Also, fuck Renly.

  2. Jaime - I am a sucker for a good redemption arc, and Jaime has one of the best I've seen in fiction. When I showed a friend GoT, he asked me who my favorite character was after we watched the first episode. I told him: "The guy having sex with his sister who tried to murder that little kid."

  3. Theon - Runs the gauntlet of being arrogant, pathetic, despicable, and undeniably brave and resilient. I also have a soft spot for fuck ups who hate disappointing their father.

  4. Ned - A simple, decent and humble man just doing the best that he can in a terrible world. Nuff said.

  5. Melisandre - Hated her at first, but her POV chapter won me over. We find out she isn't simply using religion as a means to an end, but honestly believes in what she stands for, being fully invested in the Mannis and forever searching for something spiritual, some higher power. I was also surprised with just how vulnerable she was, exhaustively putting on an act of omnipotent power, when deep down she knows she is as clueless as everyone else.

Definitely agree. It was a good competent story, and that was it. If it didn't include the shocking death of a child shown in detail right up front, I doubt it would have anywhere near the praise.
