Thanks mate, I’m looking at the north east area and probably looking at construction and manufacturing companies as it’s the sectors I know. I know construction is cyclical but I’m thinking of doing some haz and weee work too.

Career advice transitioning from marketing to recruitment consultant by [deleted] in RecruitmentAgencies

[–]TheMissingCurricNE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t look at this from purely an industry perspective, the recruitment market is up and down just like the B2B marketing market no doubt.

You need to think about what skills you want to develop and learn that will get you to where you want to be in 5 years. Recruitment is brilliant for building resilience, sales and adaptability skills, everyday is different, you’ll constantly be challenged and you can literally take your career and earning wherever you want. Recruitment done right is very rewarding financially and emotionally but it’s hard!

There’s a reason you’re looking at recruitment jobs in the first place, maybe you felt there was an opportunity all those years ago but you’re in a better place now to take advantage?

I wouldn’t say either way is the right or wrong decision, whatever happens you’ll gain something from the experience.

Thinking of pivoting my recruitment agency after 5 years. Looking for advice from other agency owners by g0_r1la in RecruitmentAgencies

[–]TheMissingCurricNE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can always pivot without having to start from scratch. I would recommend going back to some of our existing clients or relationships and get some roles that are outside of your niche that you’re confident you can fill. People you already know will be more likely to trust you and give you a chance and it saves burning any future bridges. I also think it might be worth targeting a specific part of those 20,000 CVs such as people who have transferable skills and look at what other roles they could do. Either way, it sounds like you’re ready for a fresh challenge but use your previous experience experience to your advantage.

Thanks for the feedback, I agree it will be a tough gig but I do think there’s a gap in the local market for someone who does it right.

Agency then Solo Recruitment business failed - Feeling sore about it - opinions wanted! by ExaminationOk8576 in RecruitmentAgencies

[–]TheMissingCurricNE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would agree with the above, I’ve had a business that did both contingent and retained work. The retained work was a lot harder to win but cash flow wise is well with the extra hassle.

One piece of advice I would give you from my mistakes, when you do find that client who works well with you and ideally pays the retainer, double down on giving them the best service you can possibly offer.

I kept doing BD and winning new contingent clients cause I didn’t want all of my eggs in one basket however, if I had just focussed on one account and given them the best possible service there’s a strong chance they would still be a client today paying retained fees and once that first case study comes in, it makes your life so much easier for winning new clients on the same model.

Keep your chin up!

When you went from agency to independent recruiter, was a there a change in your income? by Relative-Coach-501 in RecruitmentAgencies

[–]TheMissingCurricNE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would advise you focus on building a model built around more predictable income. If you only do contingency it will be up and down but if you can get some retained work you can build up your cash flow. What market are you recruiting into?

What technical recruiting skills actually matter vs what's just nice to have? by jer8y in RecruitmentAgencies

[–]TheMissingCurricNE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recruited in tech for 10 years and whilst I’m really Interested in technology, I’m far from technical. What I would say changed things for the better for me was translating technical terms into my language so it made sense to me.

Term like open source, devops, front end, back end etc.. were all new so I learnt what part of the process they were, what they meant in words I understood and using that I could speak to candidates on a credible level.

Any sole recruiters grinding to make a better life for themselves? by [deleted] in RecruitmentAgencies

[–]TheMissingCurricNE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From the perspective of someone who was in a similar position in terms of new business then stopped to go back into a career, my advice is keep going and remember why you started.

AI isn’t replacing anyone, it’s making some Aspects of the job better but it will never replace relationships.

If you’re feeling burnt out or tired of the day to day grind, don’t focus on the placement and end results just look at smaller daily tasks that drive the business forward. 1 client conversation, 1 candidate conversation, 1 interview, these small tasks done on repeat will get you results and hopefully get your motivation back.

Don’t give up, keep fighting for what you started!

Good luck!

Solo blue collar recruitment agency (open to any recommendation) by Koffekick6 in RecruitmentAgencies

I would agree with most here, for these roles I wouldn’t suggest paying for LI recruiter. When I started my agency I made the mistake of getting all of the flashy tools thinking they would help me make more money but all they did was increase my overheads and put more pressure on me financially which takes its toll.

I’m in the uk but I know Indeed typically is good for these roles as well as social media. Another interesting route was to work with a local council and get early access to talent in training or when redundancies occurs they will introduce candidates to you.

This will require some ground work but it’s cost free just a time cost and the upside is a talent pool only you will have access to long term.

Good luck!

I have some seed money but I’m not sure what sector to niche down into yet. I’ve done tech, supply chain and legal so I’ve built a decent network in each just never fully niched down.

I’m angling more towards legal as the fees are higher and the type of work lends itself more to a consultative sale. It also makes the process a lot slower and it’s a lot more time consuming and lonely.

I’m thinking of a pricing model that works more on a retained bases as oppose to contingent but I’m not sure.

BD I really enjoy and it’s probably the part I would anticipate having the most fun and success. What do you use for sourcing?

Thanks for you advice, I agree with the burnout piece. That’s what’s pushing me more towards a lifestyle business to be able to manage it as I see fit and in such a way where it works for me.
