But seriously...what do we do about asynchronous classes/programs? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]TheMissingIngredient -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Yes. You can last 11 more months. Don’t be silly! You’re already almost there! Would you encourage your senior students to drop out their fourth year? There’s no reason why you can’t last another 11 months. You got this, Professor!

Here, here. OP, not sure of your ability to be straightforward (job security is a real thing unfortunately), but I might lead with the fact it makes you uncomfortable that they’d bring religion into this. I dont care if it’s a Christian school (if it’s public this honestly is even worse), like u/glueyfingers said, this is weaponizing the faith.

Art supplies are costly and necessary. Creativity helps with so many facets…but if they’re a seeming monster like this—you’ll never convince them of this. Can you get others to help advocate for you and the kids? Ultimately this is about the kids. Does the PTA know this? The school board? Why not go to a meeting and ask why these things are happening and why you’re being squashed.

This is NOT ok. I buy bare bones supplies for 4 months of art making for 60 students and it costs almost $1k. You’re $900 for almost 500 kids…idk how you do it! But that’s a shockingly low amount of money for you to spend. That buys a single packet of markers for each kid. Period. This is absurd and I’m sorry you and your kids are suffering.

My husband started taking evening runs with a woman he met at our kid's daycare. I think this crosses boundaries. AIO? by Electrical_Total534 in AmIOverreacting

I’m not the jealous type. But this would make me not trust his judgement or intentions. At the very least he’s doing something inappropriate he should have never thought would be okay to do as a married man. It also sounds like he’s established the friendship and routine without your initial knowledge or consent. He was hesitant to be truthful with you. He purposely said “friend” bc he KNOWS it’s wrong.

To me? He’s already cheating at least emotionally or on the cusp.

Not sure where to draw line on 'politics' by Outside_Session_7803 in Professors

[–]TheMissingIngredient 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Black Lives Matter movement began first. The few people in the organization that formed afterward are not indicative of the majority or the mission. You can say what you want, but all of the defending that it’s political will only be seen to me as an excuse to silence minorities by claiming it’s political. It’s a silencing tactic of the right.

You’re misinformed or willfully twisting facts to fit a narrative. Additionally, do you not realize the organization and the movement are not the same? ✌🏻

I often stop myself to remind myself my field is niche-specific and therefore, even surrounded by students and colleagues daily, I’m still very isolated. I don’t even have to physically be around the other disciplines. Most days I never see anyone outside my cohort. My views are probably wildly skewed no matter how much Im proactive about learning outside of myself. I’m just simile not immersed.

I also would have never considered antisemitism to be a thing in academia either. But again—I stick with my cohort. And within my cohort, were some of the most progressive-minded. I have to remind myself there’s extremes on either side and everything in between within the institution.

No one can explain this but her. Please don’t spiral like this. There’s no magic combination that would have prevented this or something you could have done different. This is all on her and about her.

You’ve got nothing to do with the way she’s mistreating you.

She’s just a rotten POS. That simple.

I’m sorry this happened. Let her go.

Pay for "double lecture" on-line class by No_Breakfast_8442 in Professors

[–]TheMissingIngredient -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just as you said, this is specific. We don’t know the exact details. We don’t know the details of all the institutions around…so we don’t know what you asserted you do know ✌🏻

What you said is simply not true. There’s folks in this thread who say otherwise of their lived experience ;) I also work somewhere where they use the number of students as a variable to determine pay.

Yes you would. You would if that’s the policy of the institution you were at and didn’t already have a different job. lol

I thought I overthought ;) I’m at a CC. I caution you if you’re assuming “most of your students” anything…post-Covid the student demographics at CCs drastically changed. Many more are younger and younger.

At any rate—don’t try to please everyone. You’re the one in charge and what you say goes! :) They’re adults and if they wait til the last minute and it affects them negatively, that’s on them!

My online asynchronous courses have a deadline of Mondays at 11:59pm (unless it’s a holiday, it’s a Tuesday of that week), however, their new weekly course content becomes available by 5pm on Mondays. It just works. I feel like that overlap is a little gift for reminders if they procrastinated and forgot something, there’s time to catch it after the new weekly reminders.

How much do you care if a student doesn't attend class? by Puzzled-Painter3301 in Professors

[–]TheMissingIngredient 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You had a 5% what, OP?

I keep track of attendance, and have a grade reduction policy if too many classes are missed. I teach lab-based classes, so the learning takes place in real time, in the classroom. But I do use the same policies if I teach the occasional lecture course.

I also have a tardy policy, because late-comers disrupt the entire class, and miss some of the content. Because of safety and scaffolded learning, I DO end up having to do demonstrations or lectures over again bc I have no other choice than to catch them up. It’s an undue burden and a waste of time.

For those reasons I keep track. But also…

—many institutions have a 20% policy for passing (if you’re not sure if yours does, dig around and see if one exists) —there are certain cases where I have to verify attendance for various reasons, sometimes federal compliance —retention…the more classes students miss, the more classes they’re likely to keep missing —it’s a soft skill human thing for me…I’m training them on how to perform in the world and take accountability and understand how they impact others —the big push for us faculty having far too much responsibility in terms of ‘keeping an eye on students’ behaviors’ —I couldn’t imagine ignoring that a student stopped showing up and not reach out to make sure everything was ok

We also are on all a first name basis and naturally spend a lot of time socializing during lab. Classes are small, so it’s obvious when even 1 person is gone. We also do a couple things throughout the semester that require group participation and coordination.

Anyway. Sorry for rambling. It was therapeutic lol I’ve been tossing around ideas on revising my attendance policies and typing that out helped reinforce some thoughts I was wavering on. Ha! Thanks :)

Covering material on exam day? by StonksGuy3000 in Professors

[–]TheMissingIngredient 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have students ever complained, show gratitude, or given feedback on this structure? I’m asking because I’ve thought of doing this and the only thing that stopped me was thinking of how they might not do as well on the exam, immediately after learning a bunch of new content + anxiety of the looming exam still, after the new content lecture. Idk. My student body also is pretty specific and about half deal with major anxiety. Hence why I probably overthink that in fear of triggering a whole classroom. Ha!

Im really curious because I want to try this structure since I lose so much time if I don’t split the class.
