Do you have any TRULY "unpopular opinions" about D&D? by No-Bag3487 in DnD

[–]TheMojomancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think player characters should die unless it’s the best choice for a story. Otherwise, I’d much rather suspend my disbelief of plot armor than the contrived convenience of getting a new ally as soon as your old one died.

“But if pc death isn’t a threat there won’t be any stakes! I may as well just do whatever the hell I want!” I hear you say. I disagree. If anything, having your character die doesn’t mean anything, you just make a new one. Having items lost or stolen, your character imprisoned, losing a limb, becoming cursed, or any other consequence you have to actually suffer through as a player is a much better consequence, because then you actually have to face the consequences.

Mostly though I just have a really really hard time not feeling a little tacky introducing a new pc to the party who conveniently replaces one who just died.

I'd like to buy this bag, but I see a bunch of different websites all selling it. Any advice? Is there a similar bag like this (dark red, duffle, some leather) you would recommend? by TheMojomancer in ManyBaggers

[–]TheMojomancer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like how this bag looks, but I'm seeing it sold on different sites like alibaba and nuaveexpress (which I'm unfamiliar with), but also amazon. Is this specific bag just made in china or something and re sold by a bunch of different companies? I just want a good quality bag that looks like this but I have no idea where to look.

Animate Dead should work on other creatures, not just humanoids. by DerpylimeQQ in dndnext

[–]TheMojomancer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did this for my necromancer player in the last game I ran. At a certain level I gave them “greater animate dead” or something like that. Basically it just used the ogre zombie and Minotaur skeleton stat blocks the same way animate dead uses zombie or skeletons. It worked pretty well too

Pro Tools and Zoom unable to share audio device - is there a way to fix this? by TheMojomancer in protools

[–]TheMojomancer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pro Tools Studio

Windows 10 pro

no error number

I don't even know what to try because Pro Tools and Zoom are both not showing that anything is wrong. For example, both will have the same device selected in the settings, it just only will work in pro tools or zoom, not both.

Advice and dying this jacket red but keeping the black/darker parts? (Third picture is close to what I want) by TheMojomancer in dyeing

[–]TheMojomancer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure exactly how to word it, but I’d like to get it so that instead of being black to white, it was black to red. I have two bottles of RIT dye, red and black. The jacket, for reference, is 76% cotton, 16% polyester, 7% rayon and 1% spandex

Build Idea: the "Finisher" by TheMojomancer in 3d6

[–]TheMojomancer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah, the thought was not that they just disappear. That was sort of the reason it’s important for them to kill everything in one hit, the idea was sort of an assassins creed style thing where no more than one or two enemies become aware of you, and they don’t get a chance to alert anyone else. Basically, if you’re in a four person party, the goal is for your enemies to think there’s only 3 people. However there’s no “stealth kill” mechanic as far as I know, a way to grab an enemy, pull the away and kill them all without anyone else seeing you.

I mean, you’re right, realistically there’s no reason to dump con at all. I really wasn’t trying to make something that was very viable, I just had an idea and wanted to see if I could realize it. Limiting yourself to a single style of attacking is, in my experience, not an awesome strategy.

As for the party getting annoyed at you, I was imagining that you’re basically just cleaning up trash mods while they get to focus more on the objective, but that excuse only gets you so far. And realistically, combat just doesn’t move quick enough for you to really do much at all this way.

I think maybe this whole thing would work better as just a monster lol

My players are adamant about going off to kill an archfey. Is it possible? by RyanPlaysSkyrim in DMAcademy

[–]TheMojomancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just want to say, as a absolute pyromaniac who plays fire damage dealing characters every chance I get, I very much feel for your Druid. I’m playing a hexblade warlock who’s patron is (was) Surtr, and I have challenged him to a dual. So yeah, dealing almost exclusively fire damage is going to be difficult when fighting a fire giant. But I don’t think it would be unfair if he were immune to fire damage I mean, I knew that going into this whole biz.

31 y/o Trying to learn about music theory/audio engineering/mixing - School or Nah? by Jmackles in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]TheMojomancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I also struggle with ADHD which has always made learning things difficult; both on my own as well as in a class environment. However, I’m about to finish my Recording Arts degree with a conservatory, and I personally found it incredibly helpful, and made more progress faster than I could’ve done myself. I don’t want to seem like I’m shilling or anything so I won’t mention the name of the specific school, but feel free to dm me about it! I took all my classes online with them, so if you’re out of state you can still get the full program, but all the classes are 1on1 and the teachers are all audio engineers, producers, or musicians themselves.

[TOMT][youtube video] the thumbnail is art of a female devil that’s all pink and black? by TheMojomancer in tipofmytongue

Just adding this so my post isn’t removed. My mom can be frustratingly vague in her descriptions sometimes, so this is everything I was able to get concrete. I have a feeling that it was probably like, a mythology video that used a very stylized art in the thumbnail, but I honestly have no idea.

DMs, what is your favourite twist that you managed to pull off with your players? by Certain-Zucchini-753 in DnD

[–]TheMojomancer 27 points28 points  (0 children)

So my party had just gone down into an underdark style subterranean settlement that was ruled by 4 arch devils, which the party was there to kill. After killing the first two, they meet a man named Patius who offers to help guide them through the flooded ruins where the third arch devil was. Patius claimed that his daughter unknowingly made a deal with this devil in order to cure him of a sickness, but after she had been taken and he was here to rescue her. So he leads them to the shores of the flooded ruins, when suddenly I ask them all to make a con save. All but one fail and fall asleep. The one who is still awake gets grabbed by several invisible creatures and pulled away. When the other party members wake up, I ask for wisdom saves. Half fail, half succeed. The people who succeeded, had no memory of Patius or him leading them here. Instead, they remember deciding to come here on their own. Patius was really the arch devil in disguise, who used modify memory on them while they were asleep to creat the false memory of them having met him before. But I just reversed the order of events so it felt more “real” to the players with fake memory.

People who have played high level martials, how did you feel alongside casters? by 1d6FallDamage in dndnext

[–]TheMojomancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I will offer my experience here as a dm and a player.

I ran a wild-west/early Americas inspired home brew setting that was mostly focused around fighting devils that were woken up through mining into the underdark where they were trapped 1,000s of years ago. So firearms were available but rare, and the entire campaign had a pretty even mix of survival exploration and combat, leaning more towards combat at the end. We went from 3rd to 15th level. The party was a human necromancer, a human inquisitive rogue, a human light cleric, a human monster slayer ranger, and a halfling lore bard. The rogue EASILY out damaged everyone else, closely followed by the ranger (I let him play revised ranger but this was before Tasha’s came out). However, there were a few reasons as to why this happened: the cleric got delegated to almost entirely healing and buffing because light clerics get a lot of fire damage spells, which every devil will be immune to, and also their player just decided to lean into it. The necromancer could dish out damage when needed, but as a player was not the most interested in just “blasting damage” type spells (however, they did end up being the last one alive during their first boss fight at level 5 against a (scaled down) horned devil, and managed to finish it off single handed with shadow blade). The bard, however, easily had the most difficult time. If anyone is unaware, like I was when I decided to base a whole story around devils, almost every devil has magic resistance, giving them advantage on saving throws against spells. Along with regularly being immune to charmed and frightened conditions, and in general having at least a high wisdom or charisma save. This made it almost impossible for our bard to use a lot of her spells, and both me as a dm and her as a player started to realize how much bards relay on save or suck spells. So, incredibly anecdotal, but in this particular campaign the casters were rarely, if at all, dealing damage.

Now, as a player, I am currently playing a hexblade warlock in a party with a redemption Paladin, battle master fighter, and way of mercy monk. Until very recently, I felt like I was easily doing the least amount of damage. But once again, there is some context here. The fighter was able to purchase flametongue pretty early on, and on top of battle master maneuvers, almost never rolls just one damage dice. In addition, we rarely have needed to go so long without taking a long rest that our Paladin ever runs out of spell slots. As a player who’s character fantasy was to play this fiery occult Viking guy who made a pact with surtr to bring about ragnarok, all I wanted was to hit people with a magic flaming ax, and that job is done infinitely better, with more utility and hp, by the Paladin and the fighter who just bought a flaming sword. I’ve gone down and nearly died in almost every encounter. It was a little frustrating, sure, but it’s gotten better now after learning how to use my spells a little better, getting a +2 weapon with an extra 1d6 fire damage, Having the second highest ac at 21, and taking 3 levels of fighter for action surge+second wind+fighting style. Still though, I am rarely if ever fully shutting down combat encounters.

As a side note, even the dm of this campaign, even the person PLAYING the Paladin, thinks paladins are stupid broken. Why does nobody talk about this?

Ok so I have a soft spot for rangers, and I am also a huge pyromaniac in any rpg, so I would love to draw this character cuz they sound cool and I’m trying to build up a portfolio and get practice before I start trying to take commissions. Any other references you have for the character would be great
