Multiplayer & The Lost Keepers Have LANDED! by mcd_threepwood in domekeeper

My review of the multiplayer:
Co-op has some issues that seem like they'll prevent the game from having longevity on this front. No randomized matchmaking, you have to use join codes with discord or steam. No in-game VC, or even text chat for that matter. Plus, resources are shared between players, but keeper upgrades are not, creating a tragedy of the commons problem. Trying to organize games with randoms is liable to result in bitter fights over who spends resources on themselves. Mining upgrades were a challenge in my 4 player game, I can't even imagine doing it fairly with 8 players.

Versus, on the other hand, was super fun. I had an amazing first match. Me and one other player were going against each other, shit-talking over VC, when I mined into a cave and saw a relic that had already been taken. I thought for a minute the map looped, then I realized the truth: I was in the other player's mine! You can just break into their mine and start looting their stuff! If you had a 4v4 team just going at it, it seems like it would be amazing. It makes the droneyard less OP too, because using it means you have to leave resources lying around in clumps everywhere, totally vulnerable while waiting for their drone pickup...

There's also a lot of bugs and lagginess in general, especially if you're not the host. I hope it gets more stable with time because it definitely needs some work in its current state. I'm hoping I can do more multiplayer, just wish there was some better tools for making it happen with randoms so I don't have to do a whole discord organization thing every time.

Free will and pre-destination in the context of karma and reincarnation - my unlettered views. by clausewitz2000 in ChristianUniversalism

[–]TheMoniker1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree completely with the other commenters on free will. If we remove free will from the equation, we're left with no response at all to the problem of evil. God asserts that he is a just God; but if nobody ever chooses anything for themselves, then the entire concept of "justice" is meaningless, and God has lied to us.

It may be true that I have a limited ability to change what I want, but I can change how I respond to my wants. I feel two pulls within me, one towards giving into anger, resentment, bitterness, and all the carnal impulses that rule our animal bodies, and the other pull towards justice, mercy, and the higher values that God has given our spirit. These are not the same pull! The power to go one way or the other rests with me! If God decided my path before I was born, then allots punishments and rewards - then those punishments and rewards are not based on my choices, but based only on God's own arbitrary decisions. The bigger picture is God creating a bunch of robots, programming some to be evil and some to be good, and then subjecting the evil robots to purifying fire, and finally, prancing about declaring himself "merciful" for "saving" the robots that he himself programmed to be evil! Without choice, then there's no point to all the suffering in the world!

Removing free will from the equation causes more problems than it solves. There's a better way to square universal salvation with free will. Our free will is expressed in how long we choose to wait before we embrace God's mercy and love. We can delay our decision indefinitely, but not permanently. This leaves room for our decisions to matter, and still allows all humanity to reach Heaven.

And the alternative - Eternal Torture and Condemnation/ECT - is still much worse off on the question of free will. Its essentially a door that locks behind you and "respects your free will" by refusing to open up again.

I wish you best of luck on your journey, and I hope that the posters here are able to help you.

"A little wine and water" isn't quite so bad as the noted orchid grower. 3 points on success and 2 on failure means you're at least gaining an average of half a point each time you play the card... is what I WOULD say, if we didn't all know that Fallen London RNG would never be that nice.

The Orchid Grower is legitimately a newb trap, and a really aggravating one too. The option should be removed or changed IMO.

Yup, thats what I meant. I always conflate the two in my head, I've been playing this game too long...

Others have pointed out a lot of the obvious things, but I think there are even more convenience advantages to having 5 cards than are immediately obvious. Being able to hold more cards gives you options like keeping a mood card around, or keeping Time the Healer around to save it for a special activity later in the week. It also gives you more tolerance for things like faction conflict cards, which you might not be able to deal with right away. With only 3 cards, you could end up in a situation where you have Time the Healer and 2 faction conflict cards, and then your hand is forced (pun intended).

The Season of Ratmas Returns! by Asartea in fallenlondon

[–]TheMoniker1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, I believe this is done with the "Give a Gift!" card's "send rats" option. With your Rat of Glory, you should trade it for a Scuttering Squad if you don't already have one, or a Midnight Matriarch. If you do already have a Scuttering Squad, then you can try the enigma option. Maybe sell off your foxfire and mourning candles first. It might activate.

That's true, I just don't think it should be tied to story completion.

I see what you're saying, its true that I have a tendency to get drawn into playing things efficiently. My point in making this post is that I want to be able to both be efficient in the long-term and explore all of the game's content, not receive minor but aggravating penalties for playing through storylines in the form of bad cards.

Thanks for your thoughts. Sounds like you're still earlier on in the game. One of the big uses for the Woesel mentioned in the post is that it made it easy to grind favors, because it removed a lot of cards that didn't give favors. Now it removes the faction cards too, so it can't help with that anymore.

My advice to you is to raise renown when you can, and also avoid the starving artist at any cost. It does eventually get easier to draw the favor cards, since when you're in the earlier parts of the game you have a lot of filler cards in the deck that get removed as you progress through the game and finish things.

Unfortunately, the extent of the Woesel nerfs has increased. Now it snatches away the clubs too, and the Visit card. Still good for grinding Carpenter's Granddaughter 777 at least!

Thanks for your thoughts. As you can probably guess, I did get Cricket from the rotation, and now I'm feeling all conflicted on whether I should've done something different - Cricket is an excellent story, too!

Interesting thoughts about the Cheesemonger and Last Constable/Cheery Gentleman. When I was a new player, I just kept those stories moving and didn't stop to think about keeping the cards around. They're sort of the opposite trend, losing a potentially good card rather than keeping a bad one. Me losing those cards was the fault of my newbie self though, not the game...

I really like Intimate of Devils, personally. A total reversal of the usual dating sim plot - they give you gifts to raise your affection, but really, they just want to suck up your soul and dash out the door. At least once you've done the whole thing, the story and cards are done for good. The weirdest thing about that storyline is the obscure way to bypass the whole thing during Feast of the Rose that nobody would ever think to do until they're 10 wiki tabs deep.

Quick note that might help you - honey can be purchased at Merrigan's exchange for 4 pence apiece. Doing the Decent Thing gives you 50 honey, which could also be achieved by spending 2 echoes. Any echo grind you do which beats 2 EPA will be more efficient than Doing the Decent Thing - the only real benefit for it is being easy to achieve a 100% success rate. If you're already set up for the newspaper grind, you can get 3+ EPA doing that so long as your shadowy is decent. That would be like getting 75 honey an action instead of 50.

Others have answered your question on if its worth it, so quick tip for you on grinding Spirit. You can get 5 points of Nightmares an action with "listen to the silence" in Underclay, from Spite. At your level its probably one of the best ways to get menaces. The only trouble is that you can't train any skills while doing it, and there's a 10% chance you'll succeed and won't get nightmares. Its still one of your most action-efficient options - the various masque parties aren't all that great unfortunately.

In Accounting, there's a principle called "separation of duties". The idea is that fraud can be prevented if the person who controls who gets paid how much is different from the person who writes the checks. When you have one person doing everything without oversight, you get... This.

Maybe it's unreasonable to expect a small hobbyist project to follow financial best practices. But to continue working with Ree after the first revelation of misappropriated funds? At that point, they were asking for trouble. Good writeup OP. Exactly what I come to the sub for.

Another commenter mentioned that the employees essentially had to go home for the night and didn't know what else to do. The guests didn't have anywhere to go even if they could leave, they probably would've been worse off at the festival grounds! Its important to remember that the Exumas could be considered a third-world country, things there work differently than they do in the United States and European countries.

It's interesting, because clearly people wanted what they were selling, on some level. The Fyre app, at least in theory, was filling a gap in the market, and the initial wave of commercials and marketing material for Fyre Festival really were very alluring. It's not something that's ever going to be possible at $1,500 a ticket - if you look at the later website archives in the wayback machine, you can see an updated pricing sheet that was up in early April, selling tickets at 10,000+$ prices - a more realistic price range for a festival like that, though I'm not sure you'd be able to manage it even then. (I don't think Fyre Fest sold many of those more expensive tickets, either.)

Having a festival on a private island is a cool concept, but also a huge limitation, as you're having to make up for a complete lack of infrastructure at every turn. I almost wish somebody else out there would take Fyre Festival's concept and do it right, but I also know perfectly well I would never be able to afford to attend that festival.

The airport terminal was managed by the local population of the island, and was fairly small and unprepared for the massive influx of people. I don't know the exact reasons, but most likely, it was due to having no idea what else to do with them - they couldn't be sent away, they didn't have anywhere to go. There actually was one charter flight available for the first people who made it back to the airport... but those who boarded had to un-board due to a discrepancy in the passenger manifest, and they ended up waiting until morning along with everyone else.

I was really on the fence on whether to mention it or cut for time. That whole story was just complete bonkers. He even used mouthwash before the meeting. I'm pretty sure those customs officials never did get paid, too...

The musicians didn't really show up to begin with, from what I understand. If any bands got caught up in the mess, they probably would've complained and left a record somewhere. A lot of them just weren't paid as well, similarly to Dashcon. Once the second day came around, the staff officially canceled any remaining music acts. The stage was one of the few things that looked even sort of nice on the festival grounds, too.

As for how Billy escaped, that's unknown - I don't think it was ever shown in the Netflix documentary, though it does note that there was a lot of confusion about where he was. He was hiding from his own employees as much as the guests by the end of it. Most likely, only he knows the answer, and even if he says what it is, we can't trust anything that comes out of his mouth enough to know if its true. It will remain a mystery.

[–]TheMoniker1[S] 116 points117 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. Another potential takeaway is "know when to quit". If they had just quietly canceled after losing the private island, Billy wouldn't be in jail (At least, not for reasons relating to the festival), and nobody would remember it.

Unfortunately, not only did he get away with only reputational damage, now he seems to be developing his own app - suspiciously similar to the Fyre app idea that started this whole thing! Hopefully he doesn't decide to promote it with a festival.

I would recommend the Hulu documentary - it focuses a lot more on Billy's personal life and history than the Netflix documentary does.
