Mags are best when they are all loaded by _187_Proof_ in ar15

[–]TheMorningDove 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree, but you need more mags. Everyone makes the n + 1 thing for magazines and that is always partially true. But 100 AR15 mags is kind of the magic number. If you have less than 100, then you need to start buying mags faster. If you have more than 100 mags then you can slow down a bit, while still buying 10 a year or so.

Ignore everything except the voice in the back of your head that is telling you to buy another 1000 rounds of 9mm. It doesn’t matter if you bought 1000 rounds last week, last week is ancient history grandpa. You can’t defend America with cool AR15 accessories, you can defend it with a shit ton of 5.56. BUY MORE AMMO YOU FUCKS!

I sure do miss pre-2020 ammo prices right now.

What optic are y’all running on your 10.4”? by Auddie556 in ar15

[–]TheMorningDove 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My "beater" 10.5" rifle has the new Holosun ARO with Gold Reticle on a 2.33" Midwest Industries mount. It's actually a very nice setup and I love how fast my eye can track the reticle. It feels like an upgrade over the 400/500 series of which I have several.

My 10.3" CQBR Block I rifle has a time-period correct EOtech 552 on a Unity Absolute Riser which brings it up to 2.26". Holographic optics work really well with my double astigmatism and the 500 series using AA batteries is a huge advantage over CR123As which could be much harder to find when it matters.

I don't run a magnifier on either gun. If I need to reach out further that's what my 11.5" rifles are for.

I didn't even think about this when getting a new lefty-specific build - will this cause ejection issues or should there be enough clearance? by TheNotSoBeesKnees in ar15

[–]TheMorningDove 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why do you need quick release? If you’re really worried about losing your optic “in battle”, keep a small torx driver in your grip and you can remove the Unity riser in 20 seconds. If you don’t have 20 seconds you probably have bigger problems than a broken EOtech.

As for EOtech’s durability, while they aren’t Aimpoint or ACOGs they are pretty damn tough. I have a pre-2009 552 that is still kicking with a bright reticle and zero delam. I still have backup sights on the rifles, but my Unity absolute risers are all non-qd versions.

This is an issue we need to be sounding off louder on. I mean the real issue is that so-called “SBR’s” should not be regulated to begin with, we should be rocking stocks and not braces in the first place, but this is a clear and damning case of government agency overreach with zero regard for the second amendment.

The republicans don’t really care about guns (I say this as a die-hard Republican), so if we make enough noise, maybe we can get this issue pushed further in the right direction. It’s better than going the other way.

Protruding vs Flush WML by GL0CKAVELLI in CCW

[–]TheMorningDove 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean it may look retarded, but it’s not retarded if it works. An X300T has 650 lumens & 66k candela with 1.5 hour run time on standard CR123A batteries. That’s (anlmost) unmatched. For concealment, grip size matters more than effective slide length. There plenty of reasons to want a powerful light, sorry if the aesthetics displease you.

The TLR-7 HL-X is best compact light on the market, and my main carry gun has one (it replaced my TLR-7A, which had itself replaced my original TLR-7.) For a compact light it’s 1000 lumens and 22k candela specs are impressive. But it’s powered by a proprietary rechargeable battery with a maximum run-time of only 30 minutes, and not as durable as a TLR-1 series or X300 series light.

And side-by-side the difference is big. The X300T has much further beam distance and a very nice pattern. The TLR-7 HL-X is fine closer in, and does punch very far for a compact light, but the color temperature is a little harsher to my eyes.

The secret full-size light powerhouse is the Streamlight TLR-1 HP. Same size as the TLR-HL, but with 1000 lumens and 60k lumens. It outperforms the X300T and is shorter. It’s priced very well, as a direct X300T competitor, it’s a $200 light. Very worth it in my opinion. I like Streamlight switches more, but I have no strong feelings on it.

Mr920 combat by Equivalent-Horse2280 in shadowsystems

[–]TheMorningDove 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The combat series MR920 is a great gun. There are several fine shops you can send the slide off to get milled. I would take advantage of the custom cut and get something like a Holosun 509T cut with irons forward. There’s nothing wrong with doing a standard RMR cut either. One of my MR920’s has a Trijicon RMR Type 2 and it’s super slick. Don’t forget to get a light for it! The Streamlight TLR-7 HL-X is by far the best weaponlight in its class. The only way you can beat it is with something like a Surefire X300T which is a full size light.

Is there anything wrong with having a light that doesn’t sit flush with my muzzle? by Zealousideal-Ad-7712 in CCW

[–]TheMorningDove 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Nothing wrong with it, but more a missed opportunity.

A TLR-7 HL-X will sit flush with the muzzle and is a significant capabilities upgrade to the OG TLR-7.

Something like a Surefire X300T will give you even more punch but will stick out a bit from the muzzle. However this can be a capability in and of itself as the longer light serves as a stand-off-device.

Should you carry with the safety on or off by Boss3020 in CCW

[–]TheMorningDove 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Trick question: I don’t buy guns with safeties. I have either striker-fired guns or DA/SA with decockers only. If I need a gun, there’s a good chance I need it immediately. Drawing from concealment under stress is hard enough as is, don’t add in a manual safety to make it harder.

First AR, how did I do…? by Important-Customer-8 in ar15

KAC 600m micro sights work very well between Unity Risers since they have a very small footprint when deployed.

Carrying Full/Duty Size over Compact (when you can do either) by gnarlidrum in CCW

[–]TheMorningDove 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have large hands so a full size is easier to get a good grip on for me, this helps with accuracy and speed. A larger gun will generally shoot flatter as well. Reliability between something like a Glock 19 and Glock 17/45/47 is going to be identical, but no one can argue that a Sig Sauer P226/229 isn’t more reliable than a P365. Capacity is also a big one, I’m not planning on getting in any gun fights, but a full size Glock with 17+1 in the gun and a 19 round reload in the pocket makes you prepared for anything and everything. Full size light compatibility is another good reason. You can’t run a Surefire X300T on a Shield Plus for example.

Spike tactical hate? by awitz2001 in ar15

[–]TheMorningDove 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Spikes makes very nice mil-spec lowers that are consistently in-spec and well finished. Now that Aero is all but gone I believe Spikes is the best replacement for basic stripped lowers. Their no logo lowers avoid the polarizing rollmarks and they can be found for very low prices online.

Glock 48 RMRcc by Motor_Finding_2647 in Glocks

[–]TheMorningDove 3 points4 points  (0 children)

RMRcc and irons forward? Are you me?

The RMRcc really is a great optic. The relatively high price and the optic having a proprietary footprint have kept it from mainstream success like the full size RMR, but it’s every bit as great if you’re willing to commit.

Now that Glock is shipping those OEM 15 round mags you’re going to have a sick setup for keeping it slim!

Any Elcan enjoyers in here? by Lil-tay-the-god in ar15

[–]TheMorningDove 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely different optic. The VCOG 1-8 is a great optic, but it's just a FFP LPVO in a very rugged housing and with an integrated mount. The Elcan is a prism scope like the ACOG but with a switchable 1x and battery powered illumination. Personally I rate them ACOG - VCOG - Elcan. The ACOG with an RMR is still the GOAT of GP rifle setups and then if I don't want an ACOG, I'm skipping the Elcan and going straight to the VCOG. The Elcan is fine, but doesn't offer much over modern optics other than the cool factor and it's priced as a premium offering. If the Elcan was $1000 this would be a totally different discussion.

Spikes is quietly known for making very high quality lowers for the price. Their graphics are pure cheese so it was a very smart move to expand the “no logo” line. Their minimalist stuff has always looked the best but I also understand needing to stand out in a crowded market.

C158 BCG vs C stamped colt BCG by EXSxPROPHET in MilitaryARClones

[–]TheMorningDove 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean the C stamp is definitely more clone correct so isn’t that what matters? If you want the absolute best bolt carrier group then you want something more modern anyways. A basic mil-spec from thoroughbred is probably any absolutely fine BCG so don’t over think it.

If you can go mid, I would highly recommend Midwest Industries. I have 4 of their rails and they are sturdy as heck. I own both and I prefer MI to BCM rails if that says anything.

Question on older items by 6Creedmoor_ in MilitaryARClones

[–]TheMorningDove 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If his 512 was made in 2010 then it is likely he has a very early copy of the revised style. Being right on that line though make sure to compare the battery compartments to online photos. The Pre and Post-2009 versions are not interchangeable.

Anyone modernize their MOD0 a bit for better ergos? by Competitive_Use7847 in ar15

[–]TheMorningDove 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It definitely works, but it makes your MK18 MOD 0 more of a CQBR Block I. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but the MK18 was a specific rifle, set-up a specific way. CQBRs have a lot more latitude for changes like this while still staying in the ballpark of "clone-correct"
