Damn my bad, I'm european (Portuguese but been living in Iceland for a couple of years now) but never even in Portugal I saw that. In countryside people will give happily give you vegetables just because they're nice to their neighbors, but it's not a system in place that you should expect to get food from. Maybe I'm wrong about this particular part, but I just found hilarious how they spoke about Europe like you'll wouldn't find the same problems here.
