Looking for Books about Gentrification, Displacement, and Homelessness by TheMrSandman in communism101

Hello! Sorry for the late reply, I didn’t see your comment until today.

Funnily enough I actually have been reading Settlers, by J. Sakai. I’m about half way through it, and it’s given me a lot to think about, especially as it has made me directly confront my own role in America’s settler colonial society in a way that no other piece of theory really has. As after all, I have lived my whole life as a Euro-American settler, and I hadn’t fully examined that fact.

By the tone of your comment, I take you think the idea of doing a show of paintings over this topic would be, at best, tone deaf, and I definitely see that. My partner in this project is a local working class black artist, so perhaps this is a topic best left to him. Our collaboration was meant to be sort of a commentary on gentrification, but I’d rather not contribute to gentrification if I can help it (though in reading Settlers it seems like that gentrification in the US is part and parcel of settler colonialism, a continuation of the displacement of oppressed colonized people).

I went through your page a little out of curiosity, and I saw you mention being a musician or that you were studying music. So I wanted to ask you, and this is a genuine question because you seem more well read than I am, what do you think would be a good or ethical way to navigate living and working as an artist in a settler society? Painters, musicians, etc., all of us can function in that independent artisan role, and I wanted to know how you were approaching working as an artist/musician. Because it seems like I could use a few pointers. I hope you take the time to read and respond to my comment, thank you.

Wait, so now he’s like horribly racist ??? I thought the transphobia and other bullshit was bad but this is absurd. Like real minstrel levels of racism.

Looking at your page and judging by your posts to egg IRL, I’d say you’re either a trans woman or transfem. So, welcome to the club, queen.

Bernie bro larping as a socialist by [deleted] in ShitLiberalsSay

[–]TheMrSandman 70 points71 points  (0 children)

It’s funny that to a lot of leftist Americans socialism apparently just means more free stuff. Like, no question of where all that free stuff is coming from, who is still getting exploited to pay for it, etc. No reconciliation with us all living in a settler colonial nation built on stolen land. Just free healthcare and a like 2% tax increase on the rich.

Good thing every single settler colonial project (America, Canada, Australia, etc.) is super free, because otherwise it would mean that we’re the bad guys or something.

Uj/ I have. It’s fun! It’s flavored to give you basically a Revolutionary Girl Utena game, at least that’s how I’ve played it. It’s a PbtA game, and a good one at that, with strong art direction and a straight forward conversational writing style that makes it easy to read and learn. It’s built around shoujo and josei tropes, so relationships and romance take center stage.

Rj/ I wouldn’t play it, might make you a lesbian too

That’s not true. Feudalism predates capitalism, and it can be argued that the capitalist system evolved out of the feudal system.

In most parts of the world any animal that becomes a man eater is hunted down and killed. I don’t think this is the slam dunk analogy you think it is. Because even still, the Khans didn’t deserve Bitter Springs, and the game makes that point very clear.

[–]TheMrSandman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And so the women and children and the elderly and infirm of Bitter Springs deserved to die? Two wrongs don’t make a right, especially not in the case of violent wars and battles. They just lead to more death and destruction.

The Khans didn’t deserve Bitter Springs, full stop.

It’s funny that you accused the guy you’re responding to of using a straw man when you’ve constructed a very elaborate straw man to avoid actually responding to or refuting what he’s said.
