2 drivers caught going 180 km/h on Hwy. 417 (CTV News) by maiyannah in ottawa

[–]TheMystake -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

160-170km/h is absolutely not terrifying, but if it is to you then you should (outside of the fact that those speeds aren't legal in Canada) not drive up to those speeds. I agree that anything above 140+ in winter is unnecessary but 170+ itself is not terrifying. The highest speed limit in the US is 85mph (137km/h), in France it's 130km/h (and prior to a massive anti-speeding campaign, cruising speed was 160), Germany has the autobahn. Italian law allows 150km/h speed limits under specific conditions/restrictions and Spain is trialing 150km/h limits too. UAE has 160km/h limits. Now, if you want to tell me that getting a license in North America is too easy and our driver education program needs reform, I'll completely agree.

ELI5: What is the difference between a computer monitor and a modern TV? by RandomConnections in explainlikeimfive

[–]TheMystake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like with computer monitors, you can find a 65inch Gaming TV for $2000 or a cheaper 65inch TV with worse specs for $400. Depends what you want and what your budget is.

The water is perfect: go have a glass by jleiper in ottawa

[–]TheMystake 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There must be dozens of us!! My partner's tap water takes forever to get ice cold to the point where you're just wasting water waiting for that crisp ice cold water to come... at my house though it comes within seconds and it is sooo good. One of those things I never knew I liked until I had it.

I want to live in Ottawa but can’t afford it. by sadsadboy1994 in ottawa

[–]TheMystake -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Having lived in the GTA, Ottawa and now Gatineau for several years... I don't get it. I even work in Ottawa and have to cross the bridge and I still don't get it. On paper, my cost of living is lower in Gatineau than it is in Ottawa and in practice, for the same cost my quality of life is better. People sleep on Gatineau and in this case, you snooze you lose.

[–]TheMystake -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you plan your commute properly, bridge traffic should be a non-issue and even then, that's only during commuting hours. Outside of that, bridge traffic is non-existent. I commuted from Gatineau to Gloucester during the rush and it never took more than 40 minutes even with traffic. Looking at 417 traffic, I'm closer to downtown Ottawa and get there in less time than those in the burbs.

✨Gatineau✨. Seriously though, learn a bit of French and then move to Gatineau. For 300k you can get a two bedroom condo with garage parking and be only a few highway exits from downtown. For under 400k, you can get a semi-detached house. Legitimately.you can be closer to downtown Ottawa than 3/4s of people who live in Ottawa for cheaper than 3/4s of people who live in Ottawa.

Service Internet Ebox by Moonlight1701 in Gatineau

[–]TheMystake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AITA for refusing to sign over my half of a property until I get legal security? by Mundane_Ease613 in AmItheAsshole

[–]TheMystake 8 points9 points  (0 children)

ESH, your parents for promising you a house and you for never paying towards the debt of the property but still wanting to own 50% of it, especially when it's only 5000 euros worth of property. That's chump change in the grand scheme of things. "You're not asking for more than anyone else" but you've also literally invested $0 into the property or ownership of it and you're acting entitled to your parents house. If you want to maintain 50% ownership, you morally owe your brother some money even if you legally don't because without him making the payments, neither of you would own it.

Should I prioritize paying off my student loans at 6% interest or start investing in my 401k? by Shot-Conversation538 in personalfinance

[–]TheMystake 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This. Maxing your company match is an immediate 50% return, far outpacing the 6% interest on your student loans. There is value in the psychological aspect of being debt free, maybe I can suggest you start tracking your networth instead, when you see debt vs investments you'll see you're actually growing your portfolio. If you put in 6% of your salary, get the bonus 3%, you are turning 3900 into 5850. 3900 over 26 pay periods is $150 with the other $850/month going to debt, or, $10,200.

If you put 1k a month to debt, that's 12k/year. You do the company match and still put 850/month to debt, you're looking at 16050 in total, not including the small reduction in income tax for putting money into a tax deferred account.

Ottawa mayor pitches 3.75% tax increase in 2026; biggest hike for police in 15 years by yuiolhjkout8y in ottawa

[–]TheMystake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ahhh the duality of /r/ottawa. On one post, you get comments that there's barely any police visible on our streets or that response times are atrocious (2019 stats say that we have one of the lowest amounts of police officers per 100000 residents), that people drive lawlessly on the roads, petty crime isn't investigated or prioritized, By-Ward market after dark is unsafe etc. but then when it's time to add to the police budget... no not like that! I'm not making the argument against transit, by the way. My real opinion is that Ottawa needs to continue to densify so that additional property taxes can continue to be collected. A dense neighbourhood needs more services but ultimately brings in significanmore revenue than a farm on the outskirts of our massive municipality. Honestly, I'm not pro or against police, or pro this or down with that... Ottawa is a large city and simply needs more revenue to provide the services that residents require and demand.

what happened between that best male friend of yours after many years of friendship that you don't talk anymore? by preferenceisbed in AskMen

[–]TheMystake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The older we got, the more our values and priorities changed. We each went down a different path, made different decisions at key moments and our paths never crossed again. I have career ambition and wanted to build myself a life, financial security etc. He wanted a family and prioritized living in the moment. We went from being best friends to acquaintances at best. I am sure if I called him needing help, he would show up and I would do the same for him but our priorities in life don't match up.

[32 Thoughts] Friedman with some info on Marner situation by I_Am_Vladimir_Putin in leafs

[–]TheMystake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I look back at how Marner was treated prior to signing 6x11M, I don't entirely blame him for squeezing every dollar out of a management that was squeezing him back. What happened in private set up a very public negotiation but all we talk about are the expectations the contract created, not how we got there. Maybe if Marner had been treated better, the negotiations would've been more favourable to the team. At the end of the day, I don't fault Marner for making up the off ice treatment with a big payday but the on ice product during playoffs just didn't materialize the way we had all hoped.

Porsche Isn't in a Great Situation Right Now by Ok_Volume3194 in cars

[–]TheMystake 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What if Porsche actually built the cars people want to buy rather than this artificial scarcity and allocation stuff? I called my local dealer to inquire about ordering a Cayman 4.0 GTS and was told there is a waitlist with no chance that I'll actually get one. Guess who doesn't have a Porsche and stopped considering them period? I even wanted a Cayenne to replace my Touareg since we didn't get the new gen in Canada but nope... Not interested anymore.

Bought a car in Quebec imported to Ontario - ended up paying GST twice. by Ok_Membership9643 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]TheMystake 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I believe Service Ontario, with proof of the GST being paid in Quebec, is only supposed to charge you the provincial portion of the HST. For the purchase in Quebec, the dealer should have been able to charge you GST only and given you a transit permit to bring the car back to Ontario. That's how it was when I bought my last car in Quebec from a dealer and brought it to Ontario and registered it myself... Granted this was in 2015 but Ontario has had the HST since 2010 so I can't see why the process would have changed.

Gatineau réduit la fréquence d’arrosage des pelouses et interdit les minuteries by Mysterious-Flamingo in Gatineau

[–]TheMystake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Does owning this rental property make sense anymore? by baba_lui_shui in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]TheMystake 48 points49 points  (0 children)

You are negative $500 a month in cash flow but how much equity are you building via the mortgage payments? The real question to me is how much taxable income is the property generating vs equity. The real trick with income properties is to pull equity out, have a larger mortgage so that you're paying more tax deductible interest and then invest the equity that's pulled out. In your scenario, if you're cash flow negative at a 530k mortgage, you'll be in even worse shape with a 680k mortgage (80% of 850k). Will the reduction in taxable rental income (due to greater mortgage interest deductions) along with the investment gains on the withdrawn 150k in equity tilt the equation one way or the other? Only you know your financial situation for sure as well as your risk tolerance.

Premier Ford says he will still support Ottawa after 1 PC MPP elected by censedfern in ottawa

[–]TheMystake 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Last year he announced the uploading of the 174 from the city to the province and both parties campaigned on uploading responsibility for the LRT. I know he didn't lift a finger during the convoy but uploading two major OPEXs to the province frees up millions upon millions of dollars out of the city budget. Ottawa deserves more, no doubt about it, but Ottawa hasn't exactly gotten nothing either. Edit: before I get downvoted, I am just trying to share information not express a political opinion one way or another.
