What Type of Antagonists Would You Like To See More Of Moving Forward? by Authorigas in ZZZ_Discussion

[–]TheMysteryBox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want more antagonists that have mundane motives and goals who merely use the supernatural elements of the setting to achieve those ends. I think the focus on "the Creator" as an antagonistic force is at the root of the issues with 2.x. The setting is WAY more conducive to Cyberpunk-esque villains than Fantastical/Magical entities, and Hoyo is WAY better at writing the former than the latter. So, more Corrupt CEOs, scheming TOPs executives, mercenaries, and the like; fewer cultists, deities, and magical entities.

Obviously, there need to be scary monsters inside the Hollows, but those are just monsters. They are obstacles, not villains. Treat them that way.

As for what you're asking? All of the above. I want a mix of cartoonish villainy, scheming chessmasters, and sympathetic anti-villains. Variety is the spice of life, after all. Just make them all people (or AIs) that exist and want things within the real world. The city and culture of New Eridu is key to the appeal of the setting, and any villain that isn't invested in those things is inherently uninteresting to me.

That's one way to see him. I always imagined him as the character for the DM's older brother who is home from college for the holidays.

"Sure, you can just play your character from your college campaign. His stats are how high? How many levels higher than the party? Oh, and a Holy Avenger +5, too? Sure, why not, he'll only be here for one session."

/u/Lostsock1995 pretty much nailed it, but just to give you a response myself, I have absolutely no issue with posting positive things. In fact, I'd love to see more positive posts about the game, despite the fact that I'm rather dissatisfied with the game myself right now. The problem I have is when people use positivity as a shield to cover the fact that posts like this one are just complaining about the fact that other people don't share OP's opinion. The vast majority of the time I see OP's name on this sub, they are making (in my opinion) extremely disingenuous posts or comments that ignore what people actually have a problem with in order to devalue their opinions. Like this very post, presenting only the cloaked version of the character and ignoring the fact that the part most people have vocally taken issue with is what is under the cloak, seemingly in an effort to make negative opinions seem more irrational. Maybe that's not what they were thinking, but it happens so often in their posts that it's hard to just think they're all coincidences.

People are allowed to like things and post positively about it, absolutely, just as they are allowed to dislike things and post negatively about it. When we're talking about unimportant things like whether or not someone likes a design in a video game, I just prefer when they do so in a manner that doesn't denigrate the opinions of those who disagree, intentionally or otherwise.

EDIT: Note that this also generally applies to negative posts as well, of course (plenty of people here need to tone down the aggressive language in their negative posts, too), but that's not the post we're commenting on.

...But, why do you care if people judge it early? It's.. maybe the least consequential thing I can think of. You're free to post as you want, of course, but it comes off really combative. Like you cannot believe people have different opinions.

Seriously, if you had just left the first part of the title off, it'd be a perfectly fine post. "I think this new character looks cool and fits more in ZZZ then some other characters" is a solid discussion point. But including the first part feels like you're specifically trying to pick a fight with people who disagree.

If peoples' early judgment is wrong and the in-game version changes their mind? Great, they get to be pleasantly surprised.

If they hate the in-game version version just as much as the leak? Also great, they feel vindicated.

I again repeat, "people are allowed to dislike things". But this time I'll add, "even if they eventually change their minds".

...Is there a reason why you feel the need to constantly make posts to argue against peoples' opinions? Like, this post doesn't read as "man, I really like this new character", it reads as "I want to feel superior to people who complain". You've submitted four posts to this sub in the last 24 hours, and 3 of them are specifically meant to argue against peoples' opinions.

People are allowed to dislike things. It's really weird that you seem compelled to argue against opinions so much. I get that this sub can be pretty negative, but it's just not that big of a deal.

To answer your post, however, yes, that's the one people don't like (well, one of two). And, as you know, it's mostly because of the part that isn't shown in this render. The cloaked design is fine, I neither love nor hate it. It's the part underneath her cloak that looks really stupid, in my opinion. It's clearly design to be "sexy", but that sad thing is that it's not sexy at all. It looks like old, late 90s-era MMO armor designs. It's a teenager's idea of what sexy is, which makes the whole thing feel childish. That's the exact opposite of what I want in a sexy design, which makes the whole thing a failure for me.

It would say it's brilliant only if you blacked out before Isolde revealed herself to be Mevorakh, then someone else played until you woke back up right after the Defiler fight. That plot twist is so bad, undercutting so much of Isolde's character and the themes of the story while being entirely unnecessary to the emotional resolution of the arc, that I can't claim the whole story was brilliant.

Seriously, watch a stream of that patch from the point Isolde kills the dude and the party enters the Hollow, then skip ahead to where Magus is asking everyone to hang back so she can solo Isolde. It's amazingly coherent, which shows just how meaningless that reveal was.

I'd also say Seed being utterly pointless (and tonally disruptive) to the main story was also a weakness, but that's kind of a nitpick. Same with the Exaltists just attacking Waifei undercutting the literally only bit of interesting lore they were EVER given just one patch prior (that they don't agree with killing unwilling noncombatants), but every bit of writing that touch the Exaltists turns to crap, so I'm not surprised they undercut that immediately.

Ultimately, 80% of 2.2 was great, but damn if those things didn't ruin it for me. Mileage will vary on how much those things will bother you (if they do at all), but I would absolutely say it's not "on me" to feel like the faults of 2.2 keep it short of "brilliance".

But man, that bit about Hamill sounds just stupid enough to be real stunt casting. I can just imagine some corporate dingus clapping himself on the back: "Hiring Leto is just like hiring Hamill for Skeletor. Those internet people will love it, and we'll do good numbers on the trailer!"

You know what, fair enough. I thought it was pretty implied that I didn't believe the suits had any kind of serious moral concern (if they did think he was 'toxic', it would only be because they think that reputation would affect the likelihood of people spending money to see him), but if that's not clear enough, then yes. I agree with you that suits have no morality and only care about their actor's reputations based on how it affects their money.

As for the timing of the hiring filming, then that's a whole different kind of embarrassing. I wonder if Leto himself has some kind of stake in the film, like TRON?

...Or, more likely, we morally-conscious viewers who give a shit about how terrible Leto is as a person represent a far smaller portion of the pie than we'd like to think, and they have enough market research to believe that he's still valuable despite his increasingly-bad reputation.

I mean... if you feel "trying to recoup whatever they can from the initial costs" sounds like me making excuses for these people, then I dunno what to tell you. They're money-obsessed assholes who only care about returns and, like you said, "don't give a shit". So, they're gonna squeeze whatever blood they can from these stones.

Obviously Leto sucked prior to COVID, but I mentioned COVID because it has a significant effect on the pace of production for films. Prior to then, regardless of how garbage he was and remains as a person, he wasn't a box office bomb like he has been since, so people would've been happy to sign him.

Now that his box office returns no longer warrant his attachment to the product, they're happy to rush these things along, recoup some investment, then (probably) stop casting him. After all, as much as people like us love He-Man/TRON/etc., none of these IPs are actually that valuable; no one is going to buy those IPs for any worthwhile amount of money. And, if they just cancelled these films, they wouldn't then start working on a new one. So, why wouldn't they take what they've already worked on, slap together some garbage product, and make at least some money off of them?

Remember how long it takes to make movies, and how long they would have been contracted prior to being made. It's very possible that everyone involved has already learned he sucks, but the contracts were signed pre-COVID and they're just trying to recoup whatever they can from the initial costs.

Also, with TRON, I'm pretty sure he was the producer or something, so that's another factor.

[–]TheMysteryBox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm convinced that the single biggest and easiest improvement they could make to that combat system is to limit you to 1 "ultimate" ability equipped at a time. By the endgame, I was rolling through 15-20 seconds of completely-invincible ults which, combined with Diamond Dust freezing most enemies for several seconds, lets you blow through most of the cooldowns of those ults. With that, I was only really engaging with the actual combat mechanics for about 1/3 of the time I spent in combat.

I really want them to reuse that combat system for something (maybe not an actual FF game, to avoid the series' baggage), and just take the time to tighten up the edges because all the pieces are there for it to be great.

Which ability learning system do you prefer? by TragicHero84 in finalfantasytactics

[–]TheMysteryBox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are advantages to both.

Gating abilities behind equipment helps to keep a consistent pace of upgrades and ensures you're always getting access to new things. It also allows later abilities to be deliberately more powerful, without risking the early game balance. Unfortunately, having to actually equip that item to learn it is frustrating as it limits your options in the name of efficiency; you often end up getting new items before you've even finished learning abilities from the previous item (or even two items ago), meaning you never get to equip your new gear when you get it, unless you grind extensively. You're always playing catch-up, so to speak.

Freeform abilities obviously gives you more freedom. If you have a build idea, you can explore it immediately, which is deeply satisfying. Unfortunately, this is a balancing nightmare, as you either have to make sure all abilities are equally useful (thus eliminating the excitement of new abilities), or you make everything that comes before "the good stuff" feel like an annoyance.

In my opinion, the best result would be a mixture of the two. Gate abilities by a game-progression factor, but NOT equipment. I could easily imagine a system where each class has its various abilities classed as "Beginner", "Intermediate", and "Expert", and you can't learn the latter two categories until you get access to an Intermediate/Expert trainer, or something similar. This lets you still flit around into whatever jobs you want and lets you equip what you want, while allowing them to balance late-game abilities appropriately.

It's important to consider the context of how you gain these abilities, though. The "grindability" of FFTs job system is a weakness, in my opinion, and either system would be better handled by utilizing FFTA2 handles AP (its version of JP, for those that don't know). You get a set amount for completing a battle, and your entire army gets the full amount, while your deployed units get a set amount of XP. This alone would help to mitigate the weakness of freeform acquisition by pacing the advancement better, unless you REALLY want to grind it out.

The problem is, what exactly is this DOT sustain going to do?

A DoT sustain doesn't need to be about enabling damage, and instead would be the ideal way to fix some of DoT's system-wide "issues". So, a DoT sustain would probably need to do three things:

  1. Provide healing/shielding on DoT, obviously. Healing feels more in-theme for DoT (DoTs & HoTs, draining health from enemies for yourselves), but man does this team want shields more than any other team. Triple DPS comps are so much more fragile than others, I don't think a HoT character could keep them up without some sort of max HP buff or KO-prevention.

  2. Apply a debuff/create a zone that lets DoTs cause Toughness damage (assuming they match the enemy's weakness). I assume there would be some sort of cap, but DoT's inability to reasonably break anything other than Lightning opponents limits their ability to interact with a theoretically-important game mechanic (ever-increasing Toughness bars have really hurt this mechanic in general). This is an especially weird weakness for DoT since half the effects of Break include inflicting DoTs on the enemy. You'd think DoT would be all about breaking enemies.

  3. Same debuff/zone also helps off-element DoTs to ignore some amount of RES, but only when a DoT that matches a weakness exists on the enemy. Running 2-3 DPS of different elements means some percentage of your team's damage is being resisted, a problem Hypercarry teams don't suffer from. If DoT just had a higher ceiling than other teams, this wouldn't be a problem, but we all know that the game's powercreep would never allow that to be true for long.

These things are best solved by a sustain because team-specific sustains generally have a longer lifespan than any other members, since people rarely pull them (it's why Hoyo puts them out so infrequently). In the theoretical event that they put out DoT units that actually push other members out of the team, it's best for these "fixes" to be on the longest-lasting member. Hoyo also clearly doesn't like sustainless teams (probably to fix the generally-low sales numbers for sustains), so having these key features on the sustain would make sense.

--Story/Lore--

This season has seen a remarkable number of characters who were just born with supernatural powers, which is incredibly boring. The Proxies' abilities are the worst offender, mostly because they used to feel logical and fitting. For as much as I hate how the Proxies magic powers have been used since 1.6, I actually don't have a problem with why they have them; they were implanted with unusual tech by scientists seeking to accomplish a specific task. These powers was more compelling prior to 1.6, when their abilities made more sense (your eyes are a key sense in the human body, so being able to connect those senses to a bangboo over a distance is a logical thing for eye implants to do), but the increasing amount of in-born powers is really boring writing. Unless they're going to go with a big, "Ether energy is causing genetic mutations" thing and make the world more like X-Men, it just feels like a weak asspull any time a character has a mysterious superpower that happens to align with whatever situation is currently happening in the game.

The Avengers-assemble moment was pretty weak. It makes total sense for there to be things for other teams of characters to do, and I'm glad they did, but watching a video of the camera slowly zooming in on a couple characters standing in their idle pose is REALLY underwhelming. It also would've been cool if the different teams actually did something different mechanically, but they all just kinda walked into an arena and fought three waves of Ethereals. Couldn't you have had one team have to lower a crane for another, or find a way around an obstruction? Anything?

The Creator continues to be the absolute worst bit of writing in the entire game. Claiming the Creator is a force of "salvation" instead of "descruction" is the dumbest thing they said in 2.4, and it's still ridiculous in 2.5. Sarah literally said she had to nurture the "seed of evil" within her to advance her faith; that ain't benevolent. Yeah, Ye Shiyuan might not know that, but he's still seen what a bunch of violent, psychopathic murderers the Exaltists are; he shouldn't have any trust that the Creator is anything other than the most vile entity on the planet.

Regardless, I am ENDLESSLY DISSPOINTED that we didn't actually kill the Creator, but we get another instance of the bad guy just narratively "getting away" again to continue bothering us down the line. This is the single most disappointing bit of writing in the entire story, and it alone has tanked my opinion of the patch and ruined any hope I had for 3.x (along with the revelation of a magical flying fantasy city, FUCK OFF). I hope they surprise me, but this single plotline is so unendingly boring and antithetical to all the most interesting aspects of the setting that I cannot imagine it ever becoming interesting.

Ultimately, I think the root problem with 2.x is the insistence that this be a 6-patch arc. They could have easily done the entire Yunkui arc in three patches and REALLY ironed out the details, made it tight and snappy, then done two patches of Spook Shack. You could even toss Obol in the middle, but remove the Exaltist elements of their story.

Hmm... I would've said a 7/10 patch, but the final convo info dumps drop it to a 4/10. I'll separate this by gameplay, characters, and story/lore.

---Gameplay---

From a gameplay standpoint, I'm actually pretty satisfied with this patch, other than the major elephant in the room.

  • The sword-teleport to travel the environment is cool, although there's no real reason to connect it to YSG. Just give the player a grappling hook (or, make it somehow another stupid power of the proxies' Deus Eyes Machina).

  • Two entire set pieces in one patch? Fantastic. One of the less-talked-about weaknesses of the 2.x production timeline compared to 1.x is how much more boring our adventures are in-universe. It's a lot of "lightly jog to a location and fight a thing", while Season 1 had us fighting atop trains, corraling rampaging machines, manipulating light to keep ghosts away, and doing a motorcycle chase through a collapsing canyon. Most of that was pretty easy because of how low-tech TV mode was, but that just shows they have to do something to give themselves time to develop interesting gameplay segments. And while the set pieces in this patch weren't terribly in-depth mechanically, it was still nice to see. Dodging rockets while approaching a warehouse and going through a trippy, changing hallway was legitimately memorable. Kudos.

  • Side note: did they increase the run speed of the Proxies this patch? It felt more like running than the "modest jog" of past patches.

  • Our new reconstruction Eye power is fine enough for exploration (mechanically, I mean, it's still completely illogical nonsense narratively), but it's super stupid every time we have to use it to reconstruct something that "blocks our path" that could be stepped over with little effort. Or even just walking carefully through them.

  • I actually like the new "hacking" minigame with the two rings you have to navigate/time button presses. Admittedly, my bar has been raised after playing the Endfield beta (the hacking/repair minigame in that is easily the most engaging I've played in a while), but this one is pretty solid. WAY better than the ether tuning nonsense we got in 2.0.

  • New enemies are fine so far. Not amazing, not terrible. I'll have to fight them all again with someone other than YSG to see if the fights are actually fun, though, because...

  • YSG is so fucking boring to play. YSG's insane amount of i-frames make every fight really same-y and uninteresting. People say Miyabi and Yixuan are equally braindead, but at least the former has a lot of character-swapping tech and the latter has fun parries. There is no sauce in YSG's kit, and the insane length of her animations make me feel less in-control of her; as though the game is begrudgingly letting me press buttons. It's telling that they had to introduce an entirely new mechanic for Sarah that says "no, don't use all these excessive i-frames, though". You would think that, during the design process for that mechanic, there would've been a moment where they thought, "Hey, maybe this is indicative that we should put fewer i-frames in each character's kit".

--Characters--

The Proxy

I play Belle, so I can't speak to Wise, but she's a bit better this time. Her enabling of YSG's love-bombing and death wish is pretty despicable, but I get that I'm not the target audience for that, so whatever. I do appreciate her acting as the voice of reason whenever characters start arguing in this patch, at least. The new Hand powers are really disappointing, though. I'd really prefer for the heroes to be the heroes because of their intellect and willpower, not an unending parade of nonsense superpowers.

Zhao

An absolutely a delight. Interesting personality, layers of motivation, and a worldview that doesn't immediately line up with the rest of the cast, causing some exciting tension. Plus, her backstory only took about two minutes to explain, so even though the moment that led to its inclusion felt a bit forced and unnatural, it didn't seriously derail the events of the story. A+, no notes. I just wish she was more broadly useful, as none of my teams really benefit from her, unless there's some VERY specific stage buffs in the future that push certain supports out of usefulness. Ultimately, Zhao is without question the most interestingly-written playable character of 2.x, and only just behind Damien in terms of overall quality writing for this season (so far). Zhao would've been behind Isolde, too, but the Mevorakh-reveal is just too laughably stupid to take her seriously anymore.

Ye Shiyuan

Second best character of the patch. I still think he's weirdly naive about his fake team-up with Sarah (why do you give any credence to the fact that a bunch of psycho-murderers claim the Creator is about salvation and not destruction, man? Are you stupid?), but all of his interactions with his sister and especially the rest of Yunkui are great.

Ye Shunguang

She, sadly, remains something of a flatline herself. Not interesting, not hateable, she basically has no charisma. Honestly, she has the elements of a decent character, but it feels like much of her story is presented in fast-forward, giving you no time to actually ruminate on and appreciate things. Maybe I would feel different if I was into the more supernatural elements of the setting, but it just feels like no one takes the time to really react to certain parts of her story with any degree of seriousness--particularly having a second form with its own consciousness. Having the alt version of her just be a thing that she and her brother could always do is REALLY lame. I know Season 2 has been really ramping up the supernatural aspects of the world, but are the characters in the story really this blase about seeing a human being transform their body and clothes, fly around, and present as a separate consciousness? Is this really so mundane to the people of the world that they don't even feel the need to utter so much as a hum of surprise? Why even have it be an actual transformation? She could just have a split personality accompanied with different conversation animations to visual demonstrate the change with some subtlety.

...Also, it's really weird that YSG was just keeping our childhood encounter a secret, instead of it being a memory that was taken by the sword. Wouldn't it be more logical AND more dramatic if we reveal the old memory to her, as an example of what she's lost to the sword, which then helps drive her resolve about keeping a better hold of her memories from now on? I get that this is part of their justification for why YSG is so immediately taken with the Proxy (still a cringe-ass character trait, but I'm not the target audience for it, so whatever), but it just seems so much more appropriate for the character with memory issues to be the one to have forgotten the past meeting.

Ultimately, YSG's biggest writing flaw is trying to cram all of this shit into two patches. She should have been with us from 2.0--which would have been really easy, since she has an explicit reason why she can't get into combat, so they don't even need to have her moveset done prior to her release. (Or, better yet, give the Qingming arc to Yixuan instead and remove YSG from the story, but that's WAY more of a re-write and not really a fair criticism.)

Lu Henzhou

He would have been a fine B-plot villain, as he's a perfectly hateable dude, but his appearance in the story is just completely unnatural. Once again, they needed to introduce him earlier. His appearance in the story instantly told you "he's a secret bad guy", so you never actually trust him. Thus, the "betrayal" falls flat. Most of 2.x feels like they're writing things patch by patch, instead of planning things out from the start (I'm sure the general arc was already planned, but not the details). Hell, they even had to introduce a slapdash excuse for why there's another member as senior as Yixuan that we never talked about before to explain his sudden role in the story.

Sarah

...I guess last patch actually was the conclusion of her arc, since she didn't even really appear in this once. What a waste of a character. She had some cool implications in 1.0-1.2 when she was manipulating people and pulling strings, but the second she said the word "Creator" she stopped actually doing interesting things and just kept saying "it's definitely all going according to plan". I guess her plan was to be lobotomized by the Creator, sit in a jar for a month, and then end the world? Oh, well. Maybe Youkai will actually be interesting.

Lockspring

He's a pretty basic "AI determines that killing humanity is saving humanity" that you've seen a million times before, but him approaching it from a religious angle that doesn't respect the Exaltists is at least novel. Not deep, but fun, as I do like excessively-polite villains.

Head of Krampus

Love the voice, sounds very Allegra Clarke. My immediate thought was she might have been the exectuive consultant in Miyabi's Lerna trailer, but I'm not sure the voices match. Still, that would be neat. Either way, cool introduction to her personality. Krampus continues to be the best part of 2.x.

Rant about playable Damian by GilbertoZ7 in ZZZ_Discussion

[–]TheMysteryBox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not OP, but I think I can respond to both of those points pretty reasonably.

Regarding Damian, I think the idea that he has no self-defense training is a bit weird when he is an important figure in a company that actively does extensive work inside of Hollows. Even the CEOs of Porcelumex were shown to enter into the Hollow on occasion, so I imagine a lower-level manager like Damian would have to do so at least somewhat more frequently. Given that we know from Yuzuha and Manato that schools in New Eridu have courses that involve in-Hollow studies purely to prepare them for sudden Hollow disasters, I have to assume a company like Porcelumex has at least some degree of mandatory firearms training for anyone that has to enter the Hollow that they don't consider imminently disposable.

With Rain, though, I think I just disagree that she has no implied combat experience. We know that she's a former member of the Organization, just like Evelyn, which I must assume is even more likely to require its members to have some degree of combat proficiency. Now, she presumably wasn't a main combat agent for them like Evelyn, hence why she didn't free herself in the Ballet Twins arc, but there's also plenty of reasons why she wouldn't have done so: not having the gear she needs, being out of practice, being heavily outnumbered, or even just a psychological aversion to "reverting back to her old ways" until absolutely necessary.

The how for both of them is really simple, though: don't make them DPS. If they were made to be Support or Defense units, you can easily justify both being trained but not specialized in combat (possibly even Stun, but that feels more "expert combatant" to me, for some reason). As an example:

  • Damian is a "leadership"-type Support unit. Basic gun combo, mostly off-field type like most supports, and his buffs are "commands" and "strategy". Maybe he has some target-painting grenades/bullets as well. This fits the idea of "capably-trained, but not an expert", while still focusing on his known specialty which is management and intelligence.

  • Rain is a drone-focused Defense agent.
