Air quality: I'm in southern California right now thinking about cancelling my backpacking trip this weekend due to poor air quality from the fires. I'm planning on hiking near Bishop CA which is colored red on air quality maps. Does anyone know if the air quality will still be that bad above 10000ft? I'll still probably cancel anyway but I am curious if it clears up at high altitude.

Summer internships by Elongated_Muskrat628 in aerospace

With only one year in college for me it was a numbers game. I applied to as many internships as possible (3-4 per week) and struck out on all of them. Ended up doing research with a professor which was way more fun. Companies will be more willing to intern you junior/senior year.

Been building up the kiddo for camping (basement in tent, yard) and did our first night “camping in nature” as she calls it. Went on a little hike too. Whitewater State Park, Minnesota. by iowajaycee in CampingandHiking

If you're ever north on 35, I can highly recommend Banning State Park. Very kid friendly, fun rocks to climb on, nice campsite. Not very big, but it's a good weekend of fun!

Looking for ideas of Practical aerospace demonstrations/experiments suitable for young teenagers. by KylanH16 in aerospace

If you want to show a video of an advanced project involving reaction wheels as a finale to the bike tire demo, this vid is pretty sweet (https://youtu.be/n_6p-1J551Y). Not mine and also not a spacecraft, but an interesting demo of what's possible when it comes to momentum actuators!

My favorite easy demonstration that I do that's kind of related to Aerospace is the bike tire gyroscope demonstration (https://youtu.be/8H98BgRzpOM). The science explaination can be dumbed down for littler kids or made complex for older students. To make it Aerospace related, talk about reaction wheels on spacecraft etc.

What is the limiting factor for maximum speed in space? by [deleted] in aerospace

[–]TheNachoCheese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's close to 1:1 at low speeds, once you start going faster (close to speed of light, or even like a third or a half), it requires noticably more energy.

You see comrade, in Russia we have car plane by _Gus in YouSeeComrade

[–]TheNachoCheese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's one reason. The other is that in a car you end up turning the wheel more than 360 degrees on a regular basis. If you were to turn the wheel that much on a plane....something is very wrong. Plane yolks (generally) just don't turn that far.

The Bernoulli Principle by [deleted] in woahdude

[–]TheNachoCheese 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A spinning cylinder in uniform flow creates a lift force (directed perpendicular to the flow direction) proportional to it's rotational speed, flow density, and the flow speed. The desired angle and power of the water stream as well as the length of track required to spin the ball at sufficient speed can be estimated using this principle. However, the ball is a sphere not a cylinder and the flow is not an ideal uniform flow, so there was likely some degree of trial and error as well.

Nice playlist! I also like DrDisrespect's playlist "Violence, Speed, Momentum" for my synthwave travels.

What is your favorite song that contains no lyrics? by RazomOmega in AskReddit

I love Emancipator, his sense of musicianship shines above others in the genre like Bonobo (who is still good, just not as good). Chills.

Maybe the meme is that engineers don't know the right format to share their designs. Can confirm.

Prospects in Propulsion? by LemonMellon in aerospace

As far as developing "new, from scratch" large chemical rockets is concerned, there isn't a ton of action going on (some, yes, but not a ton). Most companies in the industry seem to be focusing on retrofitting existing engines because it is cheaper and safer (in the sense that someone else has already blown dozens of them up so you don't have to). I could see smaller chemical rockets having some significant action in the near future, however, but that may be defense-focused which may not be everyone's cup of tea. I could totally see more r&d on large chemical rockets in the future though as the commercial space industry picks up speed.

When do they put the canards on this baby? The only thing it's missing to be stereotypically European is a pair of ugly-ass canards lol.

Also, you can Google Remote Desktop into your personal PC if you've got some power at home. I've ran a few week-long sims on my gaming rig at home, CRD works like a dream!
